Adding on to that lovely rant from @portraitofadyke about why Steve/Peggy wasn't a good ending that you just posted - Marvel acts like they were this tragic lost love but it really wasn't that. For starters, I think both Marvel and some fans forget that Steve was given an opportunity to date Peggy and he didn't take it. In the bar scene Peggy goes up to him all dressed up and basically tells him she'd be happy to dance with him (a reference to their earlier conversation). And what was Steve's reaction to this? Nothing. He was on a night out at a bar with friends, there was nothing to stop him from either dancing with her right then and there, or even agreeing to dance with her later. But he doesn't, he just stands there. If Bucky wasn't there to keep the conversation going it would a very awkward moment.
(And speaking of Bucky - usually if you were out with a friend and someone you liked approached you and asked you out you'd either take the person to a more private area or ask the friend to leave right? But Bucky doesn't leave them alone and Steve doesn't ask him to.)
So Steve does take her up on her offer, or follow her when she leaves. And bear in mind during ww2 it was common for couples to get together much quicker than they normally would. There was nothing preventing Steve from dancing with her, but he instead chose to stay at the bar with the Howlies, particularly Bucky. Now 'Choosing hanging out with your male best friend in an intimate setting over a girl who just asked you out' doesn't exactly scream 'tragic lost love' does it? (And Steve always fights for what he wants. If he really wanted to, he would've).
Steve only actually agrees to the dance when he's about to die. Meaning he only agreed to it when he knew there was absolutely 0 chance of him actually doing it. How romantic. And you'd think if he really wanted to be together he'd not want to die at the end right? Yes, the plane was busted and he was forced to down the plane, but he didn't have to not give her his location. But he didn't want to be found/rescued. He literally chose dying over being with her!
When he later wakes up in the future and Fury asks him if he's okay he replies with 'I had a date.' But why would he be disappointed about not getting to go on a date he didn't actually want to go on? It makes more sense if you read it as him being disappointed about not getting to reunite with Bucky. Because Bucky died and then Steve killed himself not long after.
Then there's the deleted scene. Steve is looking through files of all the dead Howling Commandos and he comes across Peggy's file. He can see that she's alive and her contact information. You'd think if he was desperately missing her he'd immediately reach out and try to find her. But instead he chooses to wander around the city before ending up at a gym. So that's a second time where he could be with her and actively chooses not to be.
The line 'As the world's leading expert on waiting too long . . . don't' from Age of Ultron is used on Steggy posts, but as I've pointed out, he didn't wait for her. The line probably was suppsosed to be about Peggy since Steve's vision later had her in it (when it should've been Bucky) but it doesn't work for her. But then if Steve regretted not telling Bucky he loved him before he died . . . well then the line makes sense.
Another thing about Age of Ultron is that Steve explicitly states that he does not want the white picket fence family life that Tony and Clint want. Let's imagine this whole thing with a genderbent version of Steggy for a sec. You have this woman who is asked out by a guy and she chooses not to go out with him. She actively chooses her best friend instead. She states outright that she doesn't want a typical marriage and family life. Then her 'happy ending' is living that white picket fence married life that she never wanted with the man she never wanted. (And yes of course people can change their mind but we need to see that happen. You can't just do a 180 of their entire character out of nowhere).
Compare all this to how Steve reacts to Bucky. Bucky is going off to war? Steve does all he can to join him. Bucky might be dead? Steve immediately drops everything to go find him. Bucky dies? Steve gets revenge then tries to join him. Bucky is alive and doesn't know him? Steve does everything he can to help him. Bucky is going to be shot on sight? Steve travels across countries to save him. One of Steve's teammates tries to kill Bucky? Steve does everything he can to stop this. The only time Steve doesn't react like this is during Endgame, where he is ridiculously ooc.
Marvel did write a tragic love story for Steve. It just wasn't with Peggy.
You are ABSOLUTELY correct, dearest anon. So very very correct. The only thing I'm on the fence about is the 'I had a date' line - I do much prefer to interpret it in the way you propose here, and I think it would make infinitely more sense, but on the on the other hand, I think we can also say that was just lazy writing for sentimental, heterosexual effect in the same way as all of Endgame, particularly that ending, was lazy writing for sentimental, heterosexual effect.
Anyway, I totally agree with everything else. Steve and Peggy didn't have a tragic love story, not even close. At most, at most they had mutual admiration and perhaps a little crush on each other, but that's as far as it ever went, if you ask me. Marvel tried to tell us they had this epic love story, but they didn't show us. What they showed us instead, apparently unwittingly, was an epic love story between Steve and Bucky. And when they realised.... Well.

perverts by ethel cain while writing codependent jayvik
fork found in kitchen
snippet below cut
For more than a few moments, they’re one being. Jayce looks down at himself and sees Viktor’s hands; Viktor looks back up and feels Jayce’s beard scratching at his (their) jaw. It’s nice. It’s complete.
It’s /right/, one of them thinks.
Both of them say.
They breath out- or make the motion at least. It’s a comforting familiarity, if not necessarily needed in the immaterial state they find themselves in.
So, they choose to settle in to this new existence. It feels like the first thing they’ve decided together in the longest time. The first thing that wasn’t their conjoined deaths, anyways.
Jayce looks out around the cosmic, arcanic plane and hears the contented hum of Viktor’s thoughts running alongside his.
Adjoined mind, body, and soul.
But peace has never been their willing companion. Soon enough, it runs from them again.
They’re cleaved apart and Jayce is reminded he has always been made to fight bloody and mean for everything in his life. Watching the last remnant of his partner fade from his skin, Jayce wonders how he ever forgot.

Still stuck thinking about the fact that everything that happens it happens because Jayce can't let go of Viktor, because he doesn't want to lose him, because he can't accept his death, so he corrupts his dream, violates his principles and transforms Viktor into something else just to save him, but ends up losing him anyway because he betrayed him, so Viktor leaves and loses himself, slowly losing his humanity and and he becomes a threat to everyone, and now Jayce has to stop him because it's his fault, because Viktor keeps saving him and trusting him to make things right, because Jayce promised him, but he still can't let him go, he still try to bring him back, and even when he succeeds and Viktor has to put and end of everything, Jayce still not let go.
He can't let go, so, this time, he goes with him.

I like to think when Viktor says, "Only you can show me this," to Jayce, what he's talking about is kindness. Only Jayce could show him kindness.

Jayce and Viktor sleep in the lab often. Jayce often stripped down to his undershirt, sleepiness always making him hot. Viktor however, sleeps against the worktop, he drools, which Jayce finds gross but kinda cute.
Jayce likes to watch Viktor sleep. He snores, sometimes, just a quiet sound that he likes. But Viktor sometimes, when he sleeps in his chair or on the worn chaise in the corner, gets wiggly.
And whiney.
And his hands push and rub against his pants.
And his hips buck and Jayce can’t help but reach out and offer some pressure for his burning hot, soaked pussy to rub against. Just a couple fingers slipped between his pants and underwear, pressing against the tender bud of his clit, just enough for Viktor to moan and sigh until tears slipped form his closed eyes and he went so still, falling back into content sleep.
Jayce would hide away in the bathroom, hand flying over his own hard cock, the vision of Viktor’s lips hung open as his body sparked with pleasure still fresh in his mind.
And when Viktor woke up he was renewed and happy to get back at work, non the wiser to his own orgasm. Or the reason Jayce couldn’t meet his eyes.

what’s the most annoying thing about the lead writer wringing his hands and whining that he wanted to show a “deep brotherly bond” or whatever with viktor and jayce is that he already spent two seasons showing us exactly HOW he writes sibling relationships with vi and jynx and then with jayce and caitlyn. and then he made jayce and viktor soul bond in the sky after viktor told jayce that in every timeline and every possibility only jayce’s love could break through to him??? okay well if you want me to ship the space incest i guess i will
