basically I think it's completely fine if a filmmaker reads a book and latches on to like three elements and wants to spin those three elements into an essentially new story, I believe in the validity and value of transformative works and think it's silly to dismiss adaptations as Bad And Worthless for reasons that don't even have anything to do with the actual quality of their own artistic content. however as an audience member I maintain the right to scream violently into the night air when this happens with books that I'm insane about.
