Meta Ask Game: If your character isn’t designed for shipping/isn’t interested in shipping, how hard does fandom have to mangle them to make them shipping material/open to a relationship? AND What would their haters dislike about your character? Is it a petty complaint? A mischaracterization of the character or their intentions? For Beryl, everyone's darling.

Fans would have to completely ignore his asexuality (common enough in fandom already) and make him just gay. They probably wouldn't like his canonical love interests either as they're both fat.

He'd end up getting shipped with either Jakarr, his bodyguard, or his adopted father (god forbid) in one of those abuser/abusee type of old style ships. He'd probably get super feminized or "uke-like" as well.

I think haters would treat Beryl like they do female characters and really mischaracterize him. They would call him weak and ineffectual as a prince. They would see his decision to go back to his abuser as a personal failure and sign of bad writing, without understanding his personality or feelings.

None of yall are the fic police. I DESPISE genai. I think its an insult to art, humanity, and the planet itself. But aint not a single fucking person here qualified to pick apart a strangers fic looking for a gotcha moment to make yourselves feel superior. If you think something is ai you can ask the author (most are proud of the ai use and will just tell you straight up) if they say yes you have your answer and can warn people. If they say no and you dont believe them you block and quietly keep it between you and maybe a close group of friends. Spreading misinformation is DANGEROUS. And NONE of you doing this shit are anywhere near qualified to do it.

17. What was your character’s favorite toy as a child?

I'm going to choose Ayo for this one. He definitely was a toy speeder/ship kid, and then later a model ship builder. His favorite were the TIE fighters and classic T-65B X-wings, so he could hold mock shootouts and battles like he'd read about in stories of the Rebellion. He really was predictable.

26 for astrid

26. How does your character behave around children?

Astrid is surprisingly good with young children (under 11, by human standards). She's protective and very willing to go along with games and imagined scenarios. Shockingly good at the kind of improv skills you need to play with kids, actually. Since protecting someone is her strongest drive, she's acutely attentive to the safety and needs of children left in her care.

Older kids and teens, once they've reached a point of independence where they don't want or need to be nurtured, confuse Astrid. She doesn't know how to act around them anymore. She treats them like adults who just suck at being adults, and becomes more cold and distant, the way she is with most people.

Moonlenoircrow and I gave our crackship fan babies, and since Astrid is part of that ship in the main timeline, she becomes an adoptive mother. She's not cold with her own girls as teens, the way she would be with a strange teenager, since she has that foundation of years of knowing them and caring for them.

Ayo - 19, 20 for the ask game

19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

Ayo's relationships suffer from his lack of self worth. He doesn't know how to advocate for himself or his feelings until he's pushed to the point of breaking down. Then he withdraws and seeks something stimulating to distract himself from his feelings, usually one of his unhealthy coping mechanisms (sex and excessive drinking, especially).

This only hasn't destroyed a relationship because he didn't have any strong relationships before Astrid and his friend Dagrin. Coincidentally, Ayo happens to be surrounded with stubborn people who feel strongly for him and won't let his juvenile, self-destructive behavior stop them from protecting him. Dagrin especially stuck with him out of a personal desire to 'save' Ayo (which has its own flaws).

20. In what ways does your character compare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake of self-validation, or self-criticism?

Ayo is mostly looking for self-criticism, because he's used to the environment of criticism in his family. His mother was firm and had very high expectations of him, despite (perhaps because of) him being the youngest.

He doesn't rely on comparisons with other people to determine how he feels about himself, though. He simply believes what he believes, good or bad. Most of his self-image is negative, but he sees the relentless pursuit of his goals as the only path forward (very much a "Nothing in life matters (radical)" kind of guy). He only envies other people for already having the things he wants so badly--to be a fighter pilot, and to have real love.

break and fear for Erryl and midnight for Neira

Break: What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest?

The thought (or reality) of losing the things he values most--his partners and his career. Pretty much everything else may be annoying or devastating in the moment, but he can make himself move on. He can find a way to get around it. Losing his partners or his ability to do research would break him.

N'varr's near death experience really wracked his nerves. I think he was retired by then, but took a break from whatever post-retirement research work he was probably doing to spend more time with N'varr and his other partners in turn. He hates facing the inevitability of death. He's one of those people who really hoped he would go first so he didn't have to outlive anyone he loved.

I think he had a hard time after that whole "getting held at blaster point on a distant planet with no way to contact the authorities, the university, or his family, so if they shot him dead over illegal plants the research team didn't know were being grown in their little fungal sample site, nobody would ever know or find his body" incident. He was touchy about it after the fact because it was hard for him to cope with the trauma of that kind of fear. He'll tell the story like it's funny, but he gets snappy if people try to ask him about it.

Fear: What is your OC’s greatest fear? What do they do when confronted with it? Are they open with their fear, or do they hide it away?

As noted above, his greatest fear is outliving his partners.

Erryl is an action-in-the-face-of-fear kind of guy. All adrenaline, we'll think about it later. He has intense nightmares about N'varr actually dying after his near-death incident, because he neglects the "thinking about it" part and then his body is forced to do it for him. So he does qualify as 'hiding it away'. He self-medicates a lot of his lower level anxiety.

Midnight: What keeps your OC up at night? Do they have nightmares? Fears? Anxieties? What do they do in the small hours of the morning when they should be sleeping?

The business she works for definitely keeps her up. Neira is upper management for a major aerospace engineering company on Phindar. She definitely has a book where she writes the thoughts that wake her up in the middle of the night, just so she can sleep again with the assurance that she'll handle those problems in the morning.

Her family line is her second job (to her), so if it's not her career, it's her obligation to the Nuir clan. As the matriarch, there's a lot of social pressure to keep appearances and keep the family line profitable for future generations, and to prepare the next matriarch (her eldest daughter) to play the same role.
