I am so glad I learned how AI works and learns before it got real big/I changed my major
Generative AI is not a god, it is a pattern machine. Plug enough data or examples into it and it will spout whatever you want it to say. It’s not intelligent, it’s a mocking bird, parroting back exactly what you tell it and behaving exactly how you treat it.
Tbh I really think that people need to take a big step back from using generative AI for everything, because people are forgetting how to think and vet information because they are under the false assumption that a single source on the internet can have all the answers to life, the universe, and everything in it. Like no, even amazingly written peer reviewed articles have flaws to poke at in reviews. No one and nothing is perfect, so stop acting like chatgpt is infallible

at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"
which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress

Like, I know that natural fixes can’t solve everything, but I think we should be advocate fixing being tired by accommodating for more sleep instead of advocating for more coffee and energy drinks
I know as a college student I’m supposed to be reliant almost entirely on caffeine, but something just rubs me the wrong way that we as a society normalize consuming hundreds of milligrams of caffeine and 1000% the average persons daily requirements of vitamins like b12 instead of working to fix the actual problem, which is that we should be accommodating for different sleep schedules and needs, and make a healthy diet feasible instead of pushing for and normalizing quick fixes for the symptoms of a larger societal issue that should be recognized and fixed instead

I wonder if theres some backdoor deals for certain movies to not get oscar nominated/win because if a movie is expected to win but doesn’t, the “snub” draws more attention and publicity than if the reverse were true

Image Description: At the top of the image, text reads: "Aromantic Belonging in the Queer Community". Just underneath is a wavy banner in aromantic flag colours (dark green, light green, white, grey, black). Below this is a dark green roughly-square shape reading "Looking for aromantic and aro-spec participants to take part in 60- to 90-minute online text-based interviews on your experiences of belonging as an aromantic person". To the bottom right of this is another, smaller banner in a loop-de-loop shape with colours of the aromantic flag. Further text at the bottom of the image reads "This research is being conducted as part of my Undergraduate Psychology Dissertation at the University of Glasgow. Please contact Alex Jacquemot-Krupp at [email protected] to register interest or find out more!". The image background is a colour gradient from white at the top to light green at the bottom.

It’s uncanny how similar Trump is acting like Hitler. People are now doing the Nazi salute. They’re drawing the symbol. The KKK was seen in Kentucky asking people to join them. ICE has been ripping families apart. Companies have pulled back Diversity Initiatives. We’re no longer part of WHO and there won’t be any communication from the CDC at least until February 1st. We’re being censored and the news can’t be trusted. Thousands of Americans didn’t know there were protests against Trump yesterday outside the U.S. Quotes from The Handmaid’s Tale and Anne Frank have been compared to what’s going on right now.
According to The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Studies and Prevention the U.S. has officially been given a red flag alert for Genocide.
I’m exhausted but I will never stop being angry.
