A Tale as Old as Time

TW: Grief, death of a loved one, sadness, implications of suicide

Tale as old as time.

True as it can be.

Barely even friends 

Then somebody bends

Unexpectedly 

Plastic stars glowed in the darkness, positioned in approximations of constellations. The Big Dipper. Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Orion. Cassiopeia. Andromeda. 

"Do you have a favorite constellation Hessy?"

A silly nickname born from much giggling and a very late night. One sleepover to never forget. 

"I like never thought of it." 

"Andromeda is my favorite." 

"That's dope! Will you like tell me the story?"

"Of course I will." 

Just a little change

Small to say the least

Both a little scared

Neither one prepared

Beauty and the beast

Did grief get smaller? Or did everything else get bigger? Does time really heal all wounds? Maybe grief was just a part of you and over time you added more parts so it didn't feel like so much of who you were. 

Ever just the same

Ever a surprise

Ever as before

And ever just as sure

As the sun will rise

"Clary, do you like think we'll be together like forever?"

"I know so. We're two halves of a whole aren't we? One day we'll be old and gray and still watching Beauty and the Beast five times a day."

"You're like the one who always wants to like watch it you silly goose."

"Well, it is my favorite. And you never tell me no so that's really on you." 

"That's cause it like reminds me of you."

Tale as old as time

Bittersweet and strange

Finding you can change

Learning you were wrong

A piece of paper crinkled in the otherwise silent room. The only noise was the usual sounds of the ship. A sharp hitch of breath followed after. 

"I'm home and I like brought ice cream!"

A small sniffle. 

"Clary? You home?" 

Certain as the sun

Certain as the sun

"Oh God Clara no, what did you do?"

Maybe that's what grief really was, a tale as old as time.

From Marshall: Chocolate chip cookies, like just a heap of them. And a gold locket. The locket expands to hold four photos, which Marshall has already taken the liberty of doing so: the first is of HJ and her moms from the last trip, the second is of HJ as a child with her moms, the third is her moms' wedding photo, and the fourth is of her and Marshall, also from the last trip. The second and third photo were on her moms' wall, and Marshall just took a photo of the photos.

How do you feel about not being able to go home for the conceivable future?

"I gotta admit I'm like a bit bummed about not being able to see my moms anytime like soon. But I do like think I'll be able to go home at some point. I'm just like real glad I can make sure they're not like super worried. So not super dope but not all not dope. And I'm in space!!!! How dope is that?"

"Oh they're all like so dope! How can I like choose just one? That's like asking me to pick my favorite color. It's like totally impossible."

If you were give 48 hours to spend with anyone living or dead, who would it be and what would you do?

"I'd wanna spend it with Clara. I think like lots of people who lose people are like, if I could just have five more minutes, ya know? And I'm not gonna lie and say I wouldn't. 48 hours is like a hella amount of hours when they're like gone forever. I'd totally do like all the dope things we were putting off. I don't know if she'd like space or not. But I think like showing her space would be super dope."

Mike nodded emphatically, feeling very pleased with himself for consulting HJ on this very important matter. Clearly, she got it - and even better, she was free to grab a bite to eat wit him. “Sweet, I know a sick pizza place in New Orleans - you down for a field trip?” It wasn’t like it would be a particularly long trip, considering a quick walk to the café would put them out in New Orleans if that was the destination they had in mind. 

“Oh yeah, that sounds dope!” HJ grinned, excited to go visit said pizza place. She had visited a lot of different places all over the world but going anywhere that wasn’t home was always fun. ��You want to like lead the way?”

Growing up around various species his whole life, David wasn’t very surprised by the people he met in Traceless, or any abilities they told him they had.  However, it was hard to visualize some powers when he had zero experience.  Being able to talk to any animal was a good example.  Keeping any jealous thoughts at bay, he considered her offer.  David was rather lonely in his house, and his landlord had specified he could have a pet…pending a fee every month…but they didn’t have to know that.  “You know what? Sure.”  It wasn’t like David ever did anything useful on his day off.  “Where do your friends live?  Here in the forest?”

“Oh, no, they live with me. Well the ones who want to live with me do. Some live in the forest.” Jane explained, twisting a strand of hair in her fingers. “Do you want to come meet them?” Not many people had visited her house before but at least one had told her it wasn’t a house and was barely fit for human inhabitation. Jane wasn’t sure what that meant but she wasn’t human so she was even more confused there.

Steffi’s expression shifted subtly at Ayla’s mention of ‘suitable punishment’, holding the woman in slightly higher regard now than a moment previous. The fact that Ayla seemed unperturbed by her obvious judgment was also a point in the woman’s favor - even if it was a bit unusual to Steffi that someone might choose to stand their ground to her, but not a bunch of children. “I suppose that’s your prerogative,” she conceded. “Tell me then, have you observed anything of interest this evening?” 

Ayla chuckled a bit as she leaned forward, placing her chin on her hand. “Well, you might be surprised as to what people will do when they think no is watching.” She said, gesturing outward with her other hand. “For instance, there was a  young couple talking quite loudly just over there about their star-crossed romance, a werewolf and vampire apparently. I also heard one gentleman trying to convince another to help him with some criminal acts, though said criminal acts weren’t interesting enough for me to care very much.” She smirked at Steffi. “There was also a group of young ladies talking about some very untoward things they would like to do with one Ethan Schuyler.”

Elaine slowly nodded her head, she didn’t get the big family thing, she just had her twin brother and their parents. She has a decent amount of cousins and subjects but — she knew that was not the same in any sense of the word. Red hair bounced around her face as she nodded and watched HJ tap her chest. “Why don’t they move here? It seems like you all get along well I’m sure would make most of you much happier.”

“I mean I also have like four parents so it worked out. They were only a little outnumbered.” HJ added, a helpful fact for the situation. Eight kids to four adults was a little easier than eight to two. “They have a life where they live and important jobs to do. We do like tons of visits and that’s dope enough for me. I used to do a lot of traveling so I’m totally used to it.”

“I could be allergic, though. To dirty children’s hands, or whatever weird secret ingredient you have. Wait, is the secret ingredient lime?” It seemed like the most likely candidate. A little lemon-lime twist was fun, right? She tilted her head to the side in confusion. “…Why? Children don’t have power over me. I don’t know the answers to their questions, so they could just ask you the questions instead.” 

“You should not consume strange substances if you’re allergic to anything.” Ayla pointed out. “And I assure you their hands are as clean as they can be. We do not need foodborne illness in the orphanage.” She had that problem once when they all got food poisoning from some store bought lettuce. It would not be happening again. “If you insist, though they care little for whether you have answers or not. They already ask me plenty.”

Keeping HJ out of the hospital was preferable, yes. Honestly, Yona did not think that putting HJ together with doctors asking questions was the most stress-free idea. “Yes! Yeah, you’ve got it. I know it sounds weird, but this is really important to me. You’re important to me.” Yona squirmed a little bit, and tried to fix her mussed hair. It was meant out of care, so she wasn’t too upset. “I know you’re really strong and stuff, but I can’t let chocolate get close enough to stand a chance. What do you want to do now that’s more relaxing than this?”

“I know you’re worried because you love me, that’s like totally okay. I’ll like do my best not to worry you when I can.” HJ assured Yona. She felt bad when she worried people. It’s not like she did it on purpose but she knew her lack of intelligence often got her into trouble. “You’re super important to me too.. I’ll make sure to like avoid not dope chocolate or anything else.” She broke into a grin. “I am like super strong.” To prove this she picked Yona up and more or less threw her over her shoulder. HJ was being ridiculous to lighten the mood. “Isn’t this like so relaxing?” She joked before putting her down. “We could go like, watch a movie or something.”

Aurora raised an eyebrow, she didn’t know cats to understand things like this. Didn’t think them the kind of animal that would willingly listen to anyone either…. but this girl seemed to have some sort of connection with the creature and she wasn’t going to question it. But the cat did meow in response to her demand and she chuckled. “Tell him I accept his apology if he’ll let me pet his head.” She smiled. While she didn’t think the cat understood — she still wanted to pet the kitty. Though Jane’s response of being able to talk to animals really did explain a lot. “Hey now, that’s no way to talk. Fae can be good at all sorts of things, and no one fae is good at everything. So if healing is what you’re good at then, that’s what you’re good at.”  She smiled and looked to the cat. “And speaking to animals, which by itself is an amazing skill.”

“Oh he secretly loves head pets.” Jane said, moving closer so Aurora could pet Igneous’ head. “He says you can pet him.” She added. He was such a grumpy cat but he really was affectionate when he wanted to be. “He also said as long as you promise not to man handle him but I don’t know what that means. If it’s mean, ignore him.” Sometimes Jane wished she better understood the world and the words that came with it. “Oh, I mean the villagers used to say I was a bad fae so I haven’t had a lot of people tell me I was good. Thank you.” She beamed. “I do lots of healing and talking to my animal friends. That’s the only magic I really have.” She added. “I’m Jane! Sometimes I forget you’re supposed to introduce yourself to people. I haven’t had a name very long and it’s kinda confusing.”

“What have you been practicing on?” Elaine asked cocking her head to one side as she looked over at Jane. Her eyes trailed to Jane’s fingertips then back to her eyes. “You’re good with animals, you could make a great vet” She smiled slightly and cocked her head to one side, hearing the comment she couldn’t help but laugh. “Most people take baths indoors.” She then nodded her head, “Cookie dough is delicious, you just have to be careful since raw egg can make you sick, but you’re not wrong! Cookie dough is delicious.”

“Oh at the village I did lots of healing and now I heal people who ask or my creature friends.” Jane explained. “Though I don’t do as much as I did at the village.” There was lots of healing to be done at the village. Traceless was very different. “What’s a vet?” She asked curiously. She hadn’t heard that word before. “The animals are my friends so I just try to be nice.” Jane took Elaine’s words into consideration. “Oh I didn’t know that. I don’t get sick though. The villagers used to give me berries that make most people sick all the time.”
