I know this is going to make me sound pretensions but I have to get it off my chest. I feel an unimaginable rage when someone posts a photo and is like "this picture looks like a renaissance painting lol" when the photo clearly has the lighting, colors and composition of a baroque or romantic painting. There are differences in these styles and those differences are important and labeling every "classical" looking painting as renaissance is annoying and upsetting to me. And anytime I come across one of those posts I have to put down my phone and go take a walk because they make me so mad

how to write a cover letter: a step by step guide
tl;dr: cover letters suck but I am going to provide you with a paint-by-numbers template so you never have to start a cover letter from scratch again have fun
you will need:
your resumé
the job listing
a thing to write with
your cover letter will have four (4) sections. each of these should be about a paragraph long, but of course, the more stuff you have, the more you can finagle it. for this exercise, we are only going to do 4 paragraphs. they will look like this:
introduction
job-important stuff
stuff not relevant to the job but nice
sign-off
let’s look at the job listing. let’s say that it is a Ferret Wrangler position. the job listing says you need to be able to
interact with the ferret owners,
handle ferrets, and
keep track of the ferrets you wrangled using FERREXTREME software.
you have a job history of working in a ice cream parlor, working in a pet grooming shop, and doing data entry.
your sign-off is always going to be the same thing every time. “I am excited to start my career in [ferret wrangling]/[animal care]/[whatever].” “thank you in advance for your consideration.” “if you have any questions about my qualifications or experience, I am most easily reached by phone.” whatever closing stuff you want goes here and is always the same.
your intro is going to be MOSTLY the same every time. It is always going to start with this sentence: “Dear Hiring Manager, I am writing to express my interest in the [ferret wrangling] position.” Your next couple of sentences are going to be OVERARCHING things that you bring to the table. For example, my cover letter says I enjoy fast-paced work and working directly with clients, because I do. It also says I’m passionate about social justice: also true. For this job, you might say that you enjoy working with animals and enjoy hands-on physical work.
note: if your job listing requires specific information from you OTHER THAN EXPERIENCE, you put it here. if you’re planning on moving to another state for this job, put that here. if the listing says “please put your favorite ice cream flavor in your cover letter so we know you read the instructions,” put that here. If it says, “please list your ideal salary and department,” put that here.
your middle two paragraphs are going to change the most. they are still going to be mostly the same, but you’re going to mix them up based on the job listing.
for each experience you have had (including volunteering, internships, and other jobs like tutoring or babysitting), think about several skills you had to use in that job. did you work in a call center? you probably had to use customer service skills to deal with clients. did you tutor people? that means that you probably are good at explaining complex things in a simple way that people can understand. notice that these skills are generally useful even if you’re not doing the exact same job. write down a list of the skills you have to use for each experience you have had.
now, you mix and match with what the job calls for. you match a skill from the job listing with a skill from your experience. the MOST DIRECT ONES go in the second paragraph; the ones that are UNRELATED BUT STILL GOOD SKILLS TO HAVE go in the third paragraph. notice that you are not listing things anyone would be expected to do at any job (coming to work on time, for example). you’re listing skills that are relevant to this job.
so, for example:
In my position as a pet groomer at Fuzzy Wuzzy’s, I worked with many different animals throughout the day, including ferrets, but also cats, dogs, birds, and lizards. I had to learn the precise requirements for grooming each animal and took care to provide customized and attentive service to each animal and their owner. Animals can often be afraid of grooming, but I excelled in creating a calm and supportive environment for them to look their best.
As an ice cream scooper at Ice Cream Dreams, I regularly interacted with customers taking and filling orders, handling customer complaints, and tallying up sales at the end of the day. As an associate at Data Entry Corp., I quickly learned how to use DATA software to input and calculate sales.
depending on the job, you’re going to change what’s considered “most direct” and “unrelated but still good.” if you’re applying to an ice cream parlor, you’re going to obviously put the ice cream scooper job first. if you’re applying to a job that uses DATA software, you’d put that in your first paragraph and everything else second. MIX AND MATCH.
every cover letter you write is going to be slightly different from the other. you can absolutely copy+paste stuff from letter to letter: what changes is the order of your second and third paragraphs and what skills you emphasize for a job.
Go forth and apply to jobs, my children! Boast of your skills to your foes!
