It feels like all of the other times Dirk Gently gets injured in season one (fed on by the Rowdy 3, knocked over during the bridge hostage scene, attacked by Friedkin at the Ridgely, electrocuted by the electric ghost rhino, punched by Patrick Spring) he’s felt like a fairly passive participant, like the universe keeps punching below the belt and he can’t defend himself.

But then he launches himself in front of Lydia and takes another crossbow bolt to the shoulder - and he had no guarantee that it was going to be a non-fatal wound - because the entire purpose of this entire case has been to protect her. That’s worth throwing himself into harm’s way.
