Final Presentation
Reflection:
Overall I am confident in how I have communicated my concept, and proud of what I have achieved while being in lockdown and limited to resources I can find in my apartment
If I was to do this again I would want to try and experiment with polymer clay for my prototype, what I used for my prototype was all I had available, but using something like polymer clay would of been a good experiment to evaluate methods
I really enjoyed this brief and felt it has helped me to dive into new the techniques and ways of thinking, im glad that the briefs we are set as students help us to think outside of the box and expand our ideas, where I feel this brief has helped me to learn more and find new ways of exploring and creating

Perspective Drawings
Tumblr media
From my feedback sessions I got told the main thing this drawing was missing was the food, highlighting the food is such an important aspect of these drawings especially this one is trying to represent the middle of the event, so it needs to represent some food element in the drawing
ways of doing this could be?
- photoshop
- drawing in procreate
I started to experiment with photoshop, using the perspective and distort tool to try and make the images blend in with the drawing
Tumblr media
This was the drawing I generated, I really liked the outcome of the food in this drawing as compared to drawing in procreate the images of the food are more realistic and develop more of a narrative in the drawing, where I am going to include this drawing in my final drawing set

Final Prototype
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took more photos of my prototype before I combined both of my mediums together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took the wet clay and put it on top, I felt this brought both of the elements of each prototype together where this placemat feels more real and useable, I liked this prototype more because it got rid of the foam board aspect that I use to be able to see through the clay, and by having the two different types of clay, the difference in colour creates a depth aspect to the design where it looks like more texture
For my final photos I wanted to include my actual food to make the placemat feel more real, where I took before and after shots of what the placemat might look like before the food was eaten and after..

I feel adding food has given it that realistic aspect of imagining the food event

Aerial View
Tumblr media
Comments from this drawing from the feedback session were..
- needs to included food
- no relation to site
- the middle of the table looks like a void, not apart of the able.
This made me think of how I can use this feedback to improve my drawing, I started to think of using the soil, pva glue medium and incorporate new colours to divide the texture and use it to communicate trees and food
I also thought of adding fine tip pen as an element to define certain aspects of this drawing such as the people, and the cracks in the placemats.
I want this drawing to be able to communicate the end of this event, what is left after everyone has finished eating, how time has taken over this event from start to finish
Tumblr media
this was the drawing I developed for my final presentation, but I felt it didn't full communicate the end of this event, especially since I have drawn the guests in this, which I feel like strays away from telling the story of this being the end of the event as it feels more like during
Tumblr media
I generated this drawing replicating the same medium, so these drawings can work together as one, where the seats are moved, guests are fine to show how the event has ended and how through time this event has been affected

Generating Sections
I started to think of ways I can combine the site with my drawings, from my comments my previous sections were very different from the rest of my drawings
I started to think maybe using natural elements like
- image laying in site
- collaging
- hot glue as medium?
Tumblr media
I started to experiment with hot glue as a medium but felt I ran into the same problems I had with the soil where it was hard to detail elements of my design, trying to communicate the table through section
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started to outline what I wanted my sections to look like just using pencil, brain storming ways where I would be able to bring in a natural element as well as clearly communicate the aspects of the section
I came across an artist model that used cuts outs and nature to develop a background and context for their images
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nikolai Tolsty uses nature as her background in her images seen below, where this artwork symbolises a way of representing how nature can also be art, using the patterns she finds outside to represent the aspects of her drawings. Tolsty's work also demonstrates the power of contrast. This gave me the idea of using her style as a way to translate my drawings while still keeping nice sharp line work to communicate my design
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really liked the greenery it brought into my drawings, that using this style allowed me to connect my drawings together through the aspect of nature. I started to think of ways that I can communicate the food aspect of these drawings where I started to use procreate so I can control the drawings, and communicate the slicing of food. In the end these were my final sections I dveleoped which I think have come a long way from the drawings I generated in photoshop and illustrator

Testing Placemat
I started to imagine how my prototype would actually work with the food I have choose for this event, I have drawn it but how will it actually work?
I wanted to see how the duration of eating on the placemat affects its appearance
Tumblr media
Here I have placed the food how I would expect it to be played on the table, how it is represented, I started to notice it looks how a food is placed on a table or high chair for a child, especially since it adds an extra element to the design, relating back to that childhood aspect of the circle of life
Tumblr media
I started to experiment eating on the placemat, where although I got feedback about the clay material might be dusty and not a desirable material for the place mat it didn't transfer onto the food or become dusty. The only time it would transfer onto food was when it became wet, which undried the clay
Tumblr media
At the end of this experiment the placemat was cracked and affected by time and placement of the food, we see how this event has taken a toll of this placemat how time has affect not only the guests but the placemat as well. Because this is a prototype we see the foam board come up when the clay is cracked, which initially if the placemat was made entirely out of clay it would hopefully crack and break, fully showing how this event and how time can affect everything

Differences in placemats
thinking about what Rachel said by maybe finding a difference to distinguish each placemat from the other, representing each guest that uses the placemat
6 placemats - 6 designs
what separates each guest? each self?
- age
- life experience
- goals
- beliefs
How can I create differences in each place mat?
One thing that really I interested me is changing the weight and size of each place mat to cater to each guest just as each chair does. Thinking of ways that change the weight would be the thickness in each placemat, but too thick will look off, too thin will make the placemat too fragile. Maybe different materials can add to the weight of the placemats? clay, concrete, foam board, all very different
Tumblr media
does differing in the size of each placemat consider and play into the idea of the circle of life?

Third Prototype Wet and Dry
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took photos of my prototype while wet and dry to try and establish the difference between the two and how the aspect of time affects clay. Above we see the wet undried clay, how smooth and malleable it is, where as compared to the dried images seen below we see the cracks that occur, how breakable and fragile the medium is.
I want to explore this dried clay more, testing this placemat with my intended food to see how the placemat reacts, how the food reacts is it safe?
Ways of exploring my exploration even though this is an intended prototype and not a finalised product

Creating Second Prototype
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started to experiment with air dry clay, using the same method of cutting out foam board and laying the clay on top, it was easy to manipulate and put along the edges of the foam board
I felt this material made the placemat seem more real, it gave it weight and a finished look, that using the air dry clay was completely different to the wet clay, it gave two different finishes, where they were two completely different place mats.
I started to think how can I get both elements of these placemat into one, where I could try and combine the two, adding wet clay over the top may revive that manipulative aspect this placemat is missing, generating the aspect of cracking, showing the duration of the event

Reflection of First Prototype
Tumblr media
looking back at my first exploration into using clay as a medium for the placemat, I used foam board to generate the shape and then wet the clay so it became a thin like movable paste to put onto of the foam board.
I started to think how can this be improved?
what can I change?
Thinking of how would this work in a real event setting?
I started to think of using air dry clay, it wouldn't crack as well as as wet clay does, but air dry clay adds more stability to the design of the placemat, maybe I can combine the two?

Designing of Prototype
Tumblr media
Thinking of going back to my idea of designing a placemat, taking from my exploration of the patterns found in an orange.
The idea behind this placemat is to create a temporary element to this food event, something that is affected by the guests and represents how time is a factor in everything. This placemat will crack, and crumble, being affected by the food on the placemat and representing the duration of the event.
I started to think how can I develop materials to represent this idea, I started to think of different types of clay,
- wet clay
- natural clay
- air dry clay
how can these different types of clay define different aspects of my placemat/plate. Will each guest receive the same placemat or does it different by weight? size? feel? How does changing the aspect of each placemat change the message it communicates
Do I have to create 6 placemats if they are all designed differently?

Critique Reflection Roadmap
talking to Rachel in our one to one session, I talked about the feedback I got from our week 11 sessions
Rachel talked about how I can improve my sections by first researching laminated techniques behind section furniture, by doing this will show me ways to interpret my own table in my sections.
In my feedback session Sue highlighted maybe I should shorten my blurb, but Rachel made it clear that it doesn't need to shortened but maybe review it for clarity, make sure Im not repeating my self and all the information provide is necessary, anything im missing or could expand on
Rachel also talk in regards to my sections ways of making the texture of the table and elements translated into my drawings, using specific mediums to create depth into my drawings. She also talked about different ways of adding food into my drawings, such as drawing them or taking actual photos of the food and image laying them on top
One last thing is she told me to grow confidence in my drawings and in my work, try to branch out, looking at more examples or artists work or even looking at my classmates work to gain ideas
This one on one really helped me to think about what are the extra touches I need to finish my presentation, in the last week of this project, and how I can improve the overall aspect of my project

Week 10 hand in
feedback:
- sections don't connect with the theme, feels like a different vibe, there is a stylistic jump where the sections are done digitally and don't relate well to the other drawings
- look at using plasticine over clay for the 1:1 prototype, how it can be used in the same way but produce less cracks
- add food into drawings to allow for more context
- series needs to help build up a narrative, try to allow drawings to tell a story and continue the theme
- more annotations towards those stools and adding them into the site in sections. thinking of the geometry and how they work into site
Reflection:
This feedback really helped me to understand how my presentation and drawings were seen to others, where I agreed with a lot of the feedback and had already started to analyse myself. Moving forward I wanna make sure all the new steps I take a directly related to integrating this feedback into improving my project.

Perspective drawings
Tumblr media
Planning of perspective drawing
Tumblr media
I wanted to generate this drawing continuing using clay as a medium, this drawing was to show the event before the guests has arrived, how the table is set. This drawing isn't fully finished as I want to add food by either image laying, or drawing in procreate where this can add an extra element to the drawing
LATER EDIT:
I decided to keep this image as the final and not change it by adding food, or image laying, because I want this drawing to represent the starting of the event, how the table looks in the space before food is placed, and before the guests arrive just the raw image on what you are presented with

Generating Sections
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my first sections I generated were made using soil and pva glue, I really liked the aspect of this medium but found it hard to fully translate my sections, the drawings seemed too hard to read and because the colours clashed it was hard to determine the table.
I started to think how I could improve this before our final drawing presentation in Week 11, how could I transform my drawing in time.
I started to think of our ways I can present this drawing
- photoshop
- illustrator
- procreate editing
Tumblr media
I started by putting the section with soil and pva glue into procreate to try and add more detail, using lines and shading, I found this did help to distinguish the shape of the table but I wasn't fully happy with how this still felt messy
I started to worry I wouldn't have enough time to finish my sections, I started to resort to illustrator to create my sections
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I generated these sections to try and communicate the setting of my food event, but I felt these sections were too technical and were a different vibe to what the rest of my drawings protrayed. I still decided to use these drawings in my final drawings for review, but to generate future drawings
- image laying/collaging
- using food as paint

drawings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Generating a perspective view and aerial view, using soil, pva glue, and black paint to translate the drawing, and communicate the texture of the table
This medium communicates
- texture
- natural aspect
- dimensions within the event
Moving forward with these drawings I want to try and create a new element, looking at shading and analysing the drawings further.
This medium allows me to easy manipulate it, where I can build on the texture further, adding layers to either have opacity or not

working on final drawings...
materials I want to use to consider the concept of my design, creating natural elements with clay, food, dirt as mediums to create my drawings
- thinking of how I can translate clay into a drawing element, looking at my draft floor plan I wanted to improve the aspect of how I manipulated the clay, considering developing a background to add depth into the drawings
- Working on soil, and pva medium I wanted to improve this texture by adding paint which will also improve the look of the medium when dried
