        ❝ that thing you can do, where you go all black and terrifying? ❞ fearne mimes what she thinks it looks like, fingers becoming claws; she knows that she looks gentle as can be, and uses it to her advantage. what? sometimes killing is fun. it’s even more fun when people aren’t expecting it of you. the people she kills deserve it, as would the one she threatens. ( nobody hurts her friends. ) laudna happens to be the opposite. she looks imposing, but fearne thinks she’s just lovely.  ❝ it’s very impressive. is that–is that something you can teach? ❞

         laudna’s hooked on fearne’s every word, her expression growing rapidly with more delight. of all these eccentric people they’ve managed to bond with, fearne might possibly be one of laudna’s favorites. she laughs, clapping her hands in genuine appreciation of fearne’s attempt to imitate what it is the hollow one can do. “oh, you know... i don’t quite know. imogen has all her own talents and gifts and outside of pâté, i’ve had no one to teach it to. or to even try to teach it to.” she reaches for fearne’s hands, clasping them gently, but excitedly. “we should try! not that you aren’t absolutely fabulous without needing my tricks, but could you imagine how terrifying you’d be if you could just... drip away and crick-crack at will.”

still holding her hand with one of hers, she uses the other to fan herself.

            “little robit,” laudna says, gesturing to fresh cut grass with a spindly wave of her fingers. she crouches, more fitting to be at their level as opposed to towering above. she smiles, a genuine gesture in spite of the way her mouth seems to crack at the seams and pull a little too wide. “do you eat bones?” her eyes are wide, curious. “it isn’t metal. no copper. but the nutritional value of bones is surely something you could ... obtain by chewing away at them.”  her gaze doesn’t waver from fresh cut grass, but her mouth moves, and her voice sounds muffled. “ehhh, just wonderin’ if you’re gonna eat me!” 

laudna laughs, patting pâté at her side.

           “yes, pâté is just curious, but by no means is being rude about it!”

           “speak for yourself, laudna.” 

            “do be quiet, pâté, letters wants to speak.”

the pair has retired again to the safety of zhudanna’s humble set up. she murmurs to herself, knitting in her chair until inevitably falling asleep. in the candlelight that flickers and wanes, imogen and laudna sit. there’s much on imogen’s mind, laudna wouldn’t need to be particularly perceptive to take heed of that. since bertrand’s death, since the nightmares, since this whole quest, she’s seemed to fall further into herself. laudna’s only fear, and she isn’t one to boast much in the way of fear, was imogen slipping beyond where she could be reached. perhaps it’s laudna’s staring that prompts her companion, but regardless the hollow one smiles. 

           “i could say the same. i’d made peace with being ... removed from others, if you will.” their stares, their whispers, the rumors. and then there was imogen. so wholly unlike the rest. “just me and pâté,” she pats the rat strung up at her side, pausing for only a moment should he like to interject. he doesn’t. 

“as splendid company as he is, rude as he can be, but then you came along and now i wouldn’t have it any other way.” and she means it. smile in tow, pulling higher at the left side of her mouth, she uses her finger to stir her boiling cup of tea. black drips in with the liquid, but it isn’t as if she minds it. “hard or not, imogen, it isn’t something you’ll have to face again — being alone. i’m not going anywhere you aren’t going as well. even if this little adventure we have with our new friends goes south, i’ll remain.” 

with a graceful lift of the chipped cup, she toasts to their friendship and sips in delight.
