i'm losing hope - my thoughts on the proliferation of ai

for context: i am a third year business student taking an honours degree in accounting (i know, a bit ironic considering i am a lover of the arts and the whimsy and the mystical, etc.)

i genuinely cannot escape ai. ai is everywhere i go - from generated text, images, advertisements, and in my recent horror, videos too. the video was a black woman eating a fried chicken talking about "why are you getting with broke men?" and i didn't question a single thing about it until someone pointed out the *whole* video was ai. i genuinely couldn't even tell it was ai because it even captured the subtleties and enunciations of her words.

escaping the virtual world, i thought i would be granted an escape from ai - surely, the academic world has much more integrity in dealing with ai.

wrong.

everywhere i look, a student is utilizing chatgpt. enter the classroom - the teacher is encouraging use of ai. get into group assignments - the tutor goes, "make sure to use chatgpt sparingly - paraphrase a little, at least." even now, there are two girls in front of me using chatgpt to navigate through their group assignment...

i actually can't escape it. i'm filled with so much dread and fear such a tool has been commodified to the masses that even academic institutions are accepting its presence. i'm filled with so much disgust that this is the academic (and soon, career) path that i have chosen. it genuinely feels so soul-crushing. i feel like i've made a grave mistake.

the worst part is fully knowing these students will get a higher grade than me despite putting in less than a tenth of the effort i would put in my assignments - rich coming from someone with a less-good GPA, but i do take the effort in searching for sources, ensuring the sources are reliable, etc. while doing an assignment. that being said, i don't hold any contempt for the students who are simply trying to pass the class with the least amount of effort - i hold resentment that the academic systems force them to resort to ai to pass their classes.

i don't know. maybe i'm falling behind in the times. i don't like our current timeline with all the horrors going on. there needs to be strict regulations being implemented now.

Space’s Summer Chronicles #13: June 13th

Heyooo, this is the first entry I’m writing directly in the post editor since arriving in Budapest!

Today was my last full day in Budapest which is kinda bittersweet but I’m also full on broke and ready to go home. I literally had a meal and a half today but thankfully I underwent some psychotic diet in late May that shrunk my stomach somehow so I was not hungry yayyy

I have the budget for one (1) doner kebab tomorrow and lemme tell you, a LOT is riding on it. Anyways, lemme tell you about my day!

Okay so today was basically a leftovers day - we went to see a few places we didn’t get to see in the previous days, we got a tour of the Hungarian Parliament, we had those great burgers from two days ago, we went back to the super cool ruin bar from yesterday and I got drunk for the last time on this trip with what I had left over from the limoncello bottle I bought a few days ago. Then we went to Margaret Island for the last time, my friend went home and I went to look at the city from Fisherman’s Bastion, it was really pretty. ALSO I SAW A COUPLE GET ENGAGED, the girl had the most GORGEOUS purple dress on.

I have some regrets about this trip - if i didn’t have that many cocktails that didn’t even get me tipsy in the beginning of the trip, my budget might have looked a lot different and I would have been able to afford to go partying at least one night. I wanted to try out two bars under my apartment but I can’t afford it. I wanted to go to Morrison’s 2 and buy their unlimited alcohol package but I spent the same amount of money on some bullshit 2 litre cocktail on Margaret Island that barely got me tipsy! I like Budapest, maybe not as much as Rome but I WILL be coming back eventually cause I NEED to explore the party scene properly.

Let’s focus on the positives though - this was a great trip, even in the periods where I was broke and it was a super fun experience, overpriced breakfasts be damned. This summer is shaping up to be something really special and I can’t wait to see how it develops further!

ALSO i’ve been struggling with defining Budapest with a color, been divided between red and blue but now I’m feeling green. There’s such obvious plant motifs everywhere and the whole city smells DIVINE, linden trees are blooming everywhere and it’s more or less my favorite smell ever cause back when I was spending my summers on the playground, the linden smell would fill the air and as a result I associate it with endless carefree summer fun. Weirdly enough I hate linden tea.

Space’s Summer Chronicles #7: June 7th

Heyooo so this entry was mostly written in a random park in Budapest bordering the Danube river!

Something that I noticed yesterday but forgot to mention in yesterday’s entry is: Hungarians REALLY enjoy gathering in green spaces/meadows in parks, mostly teenagers but people of all ages, so I really wanna participate in this tradition of the locals and get blackout drunk in the park in the following days. Stay tuned for the results in the following days.

I am pleased to report that I’m finally in the vacation mood. Me and my friend got up early, feeling refreshed, had some breakfast in a nice cafe (I had cake) and went to see some sights. We walked by the river on our way to Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion, explored things on the way, blasted Ready Or Not by Bridgit Mendler on our phones and had a lot of fun. Then, we had some drinks at a nice bar under the Fisherman’s Bastion (the view was amazing). I had a mango colada and a gin cocktail and they were great. Then we went to eat, exploring along the way and ended up in one of Jamie Oliver’s Diners. The food was great, the waitress was great and I had two more cocktails lol. More exploring and now we’re waiting for our UNLIMITED PROSECCO AND APEROL SPRITZ CRUISE ON THE DANUBE WOOOOOO i’m gonna get blackout drunk lol

Gonna continue this entry and tell you how it went.

Budapest is a city of oil paints. Every time I look at the river, it just LOOKS LIKE IT’S DRAWN IN OIL. It’s gorgeous.

I’m drunk. I’m having a semi-parasocial relationship with a Samsung sign. It’s semi cause I’m aware of it and also i don’t care about it hence I can walk away in a few minutes after my song finishes.

Faceless shapes on boats and they all seem to be LOOKING AT ME? Lowkey funny as fuck.

Falling off the bridge between Buda and Pest is a peculiar and disturbing thought. I don’t want it to happen but it would be lowkey poetic if i had grown up here and also had two sides of my family on different sides of the river and I was depressed they made me choose. Fun lol.

Anyways this is currently getting continued as I walk home getting attacked by these river winds on the bridge JeSUS, I’m lowkey cold. I’m not used to being cold in June. I left my friend to take a shower at the apartment and I left to explore Margaret Island cause I wanted to burn off the Aperol I consumed. I think I drank like 8 Aperol Spritz-es (in champagne glasses ofc, i’m not an animal and also they didn’t give me a different glass). The cruise was super fun, I’ll include pics. I got very buzzed so it was very successful and also it was very beautiful and I loved it. I think I’ll get on it one more time before we leave Budapest. I wanna pee so bad. I didn’t even need to pee back when we were exploring during the day even though I drank like 2 litres of water but now that I’m drunk I need to pee constantly. I’m almost back to the apartment so I have to hold on and not get arrested on public urination charges. The kebab place smells DIVINE. I have to have a kebab from there for dinner some time. I also need some Korean BBQ, I’ve never had it but Budapest has a decently sized Korean scene so I WILL HAVE IT. I have like 2 minutes left til I reach the apartment and GOD I HOPE my friend is done showering cause I. NEED. TO. Pee.

Anyways, let’s get back to the topic of the blog. This is a perfect summer day, I explored, I ate delicious food, I took nice pics and I got drunk and had fun. 11/10. Let us all pray that 1. I continue to have this much fun and 2. My money doesn’t run out.

Okayy update after the shower, apparently according to my gallery I went a LOT of places today and did a lot of things. Might go to a thermal bath tomorrow. We’ll see. BYEEEE!

I miss my grandma. She used to say Budapest is her favorite city in the world. I wanna fall in love with it like she did.
