VERITA MORALES
“Why did movies make milking cows look so easy?” Verita said, pushing dirt and hay off her jeans. “ I thought I’d help out in the barn, maybe help farm a little but I think it might be better if I stick to teaching. Less manure, more finger painting.”
—
Jace spent a fair amount of time at the farm when he wasn’t otherwise preoccupied with his main duties as one of the second in command. Still, he was far from an expert at taking care of the animals. “They got really good actors, those cows didn’t get paid enough. One of them should’ve been put up for an oscar.” He made an attempt at a joke with a small grin.

the sanctuary is lucky to have jason “jace” danvers. five years ago, the thirty-eight year old was a firefighter and now he is a second in command.
Character Birthday: May 6
Pronouns: He/Him
How long have they been at the sanctuary? Two and a half years
How did they find the sanctuary? By luck. Jace had been wandering since the world collapsed. There were many times the man incorrectly thought he’d finally found a safe space for his remaining family only to be proven horribly wrong. Stumbling upon the sanctuary was the best accident of life after the end of the world.
What was their life like before the creatures? Happy. Yes, there were hard parts and darker times full of their own struggles, but looking back now all he can remember are the best parts of it. The past is only looked at through rose-tinted glasses. He had a loving family, a job he loved, there isn’t anything he wouldn’t trade to get it all back.
What is something they miss from their old life? Family. Every day he misses the people that his lost. Three younger sisters became one. His wife and youngest daughter were lost when the creatures first appeared. Keeping his son and eldest daughter safe is what motivated him to keep going.
Where can they be found on the farm? Around the meeting house, he likes to be easy to be found in case there’s someone who needs his help. Besides there, Jace can be found near the barn where his children spend most of their time outside of school.
What do they like about living at the sanctuary? The sense of security, not going to sleep every night terrified that someone or something would come after his family in the middle of the night. A piece of normalcy he thought was lost forever was given back to him.
What do they dislike about living at the sanctuary? If you ask Jace he’ll say there’s nothing that he doesn’t like. You won’t be able to press it out of him no matter how hard you try but that isn’t entirely the truth. There are moments when dealing with issues the community faces gets to him. When he wishes he could drop the customer service act he’ll plaster on when dealing with a particularly frustrating situation and speak his mind entirely.
Have they learned a new skill on the farm? Though Jace isn’t a farmer he’s picked up several skills related to planting and harvesting crops when extra hands were needed. In the world before, the most time he spent in the garden was cutting the grass.
Have they ever encountered a creature? Yes.
Do they have any fears? Absolutely. Losing the rest of his family, the sanctuary collapsing just like society. The creatures becoming immune to what caused them to start dying off and coming back in full force.
What are their strengths? Before the world collapsed he was a firefighter. The job required strength, bravery, some medical skills, and many other traits that helped him make it through the early days of the end of the world. He’s good at thinking on his feet, keeping his cool in high stress situations, and he’s managed to keep his sense of humor through everything.
What are their weaknesses? When things were at their worst Jace still wanted to believe the best in others. That habit got him into trouble several times. The man will run headfirst into danger, his self-sacrificing nature needs to be reigned in at times. He can be stubborn and get tunnel vison, especially when it comes to protecting his family.
What, if anything, did they take with them from home? At first, he took several things. All shoved in a large bag. Mostly things related to survival but a few sentimental items. Over the years, they were damaged, lost, worn down, or stolen. Now all he has left is the last family photo they took, his old wedding ring, and a pocket knife.
Do they have any goals for the future? The main goal would be keeping the sanctuary going, building a future that resembles the life they once had for his children so they can thrive and no longer have to live in fear.
