I’ve Been Trying To Figure You Out

When Eddie shut his eyes for the final time while cradled in Dustin’s arms he had accepted his death. However he didn’t expect to open his eyes and be lying in an unfamiliar bed. But what he really didn’t see coming was to be sharing said bed with former king of Hawkins High, Steve Harrington. Come to find out Eddie has switched places with another version of himself that somehow scored Steve as his boyfriend. Oh, and another thing, he apparently is not supposed to know about the Upside Down. At first it seems like a dream come true until he starts seeing the other version of himself when he falls asleep. Now Eddie must decide whether to do the right thing and give up this life, or continue living it while the guilt tries to kill him all over again.

Chapter Five: Day 5

“Let’s hear it,” Wayne says as he uncaps the disinfectant and uses it to wet a cotton ball. Eddie takes in a deep breath before letting out a shaky exhale that gave away how emotional he was feeling.

“I’ve been keeping something from everyone. And it wasn’t that I was lying about it but I didn’t say anything about it either. The guilt had been eating away at me so I finally confessed to Steve this morning. He,” Eddie’s lips wobbled, “...took it really hard.” Eddie bit his lip from the sting of the disinfectant as it was applied to his knuckles. But other than that he made no other protest towards the pain. A few tears silently begin to make their way down Eddie’s cheeks and he doesn’t even attempt to wipe them away. Wayne doesn’t say anything for a while, just tends to Eddie’s wounds.

“God, dad was right about me--”

“No the hell he wasn’t,” Wayne cuts Eddie off sternly.

“Wayne you don’t understand,” Eddie protests. “I fuck everything up! I don’t deserve--”

“Son, don’t you dare finish that sentence.” Eddie is stunned, Wayne has never raised his voice like that at him. His teary gaze meets Wayne’s stern one as his uncle continues. “Now, you listen here. You deserve everything your heart desires in this rotting world. Whether that be being a rockstar, finishing school, or a boy to fall in love with. The universe owes you that much with how much shit it has thrown at you. Ya’ understand?”

Eddie for the life of him can’t muster up a response so all he can offer is a nod. Wayne returns the nod approvingly as he continues to bandage up Eddie’s knuckles. More tears streak his face as he watches his uncle work in silence. In that moment he truly feels like a young boy again as he tells Wayne about what reason the bullies had to rough him up today. It makes Eddie realize just how much he is going to miss his uncle.

Chapter Four: Day 4

“Is it safe to assume you two are over your tiff?” Wayne asks, making Steve’s eyebrows furrow in confusion. He opens his mouth to speak but Eddie beats him to it before he accidently blows their cover.

“Yeah Wayne, I told you we were going to work it out last night. What happened to not prodding?” Eddie replies, raising a brow at the man.

“Just wanted to make sure I still had someone to talk about sports with,” Wayne admits with a shrug. It makes Eddie roll his eyes to the ceiling while Steve just chuckles at the dramatic reaction.

“Yeah, everything is fine,” Steve says smiling, but then he leans in towards Wayne and covers his mouth. “I’d still sneak over to do it anyways,” Steve mockingly whispers and Wayne nods in approval.

“I hate you both,” Eddie deadpans, rousing a chuckle out of both Steve and Wayne.

Chapter Three: Day 3

Suddenly, Steve begins to lean in towards Eddie’s face. Eddie’s eyes go wide in panic as he quickly tries to spit out a few words.

“Steve, I’m not-”

“I know,” Steve cuts Eddie off and then kisses him gently. This kiss was much different from the one the previous morning. That one had just been a simple greeting, but this one was much more. It carried what Eddie would dare say was deep love full of passion and thankfulness. It lasts long enough for Eddie to hesitantly give into his desires and kiss those plump lips back. Something flutters ticklishly in Eddie’s stomach and he can’t find it in himself to hate it. Much to Eddie’s dismay though, Steve does pull away but not any less gently than he had kissed him. Steve’s head returns back under Eddie’s chin as he speaks up again.

“Thank you.” Eddie swallows hard and he hopes Steve isn’t able to hear it.

“You’re welcome, sweetheart.”
