Animation trial 2. I think this may work better than the O animation trial, however it might also make the C a bit difficult to read.

Animation trial. I was imagining doing this effect to all of the hands, however I don’t really get the sense it adds anything to the image.

C trial. I like it but it because it lacks the depth of the O trial it feels a bit less powerful.

‘O’ trials - love the bottom one for its depth. I think the depth sort of mimics a spiral - this spiral reminds me of what it felt like losing control of a compulsion. I think this treatment of the scans looks confronting in a good kind of way. I have adjusted the colour and brightness so that the hands look as though they are coming out of the dark a bit more. I like having a plain black background (instead of any context) as it makes you focus solely on the hands and what they are doing. If I have time I would like to animate the bottom one to introduce more of a sense of movement.

New scans. I love this! It sort of makes me feel uncomfortable but it also makes me want to learn more. The new variation of hand gestures makes the image more interesting to look at. All of the hand gestures are positions my hand may have been in when completing a checking compulsion (for example here we have the position I would have had my hand in to repeatedly make sure the fridge was closed).
Now to turn this into typography!
I have decided to change my word to OCD. Unreasonable has been a great word as it focussed my attention on the recovery part of my journey, however OCD is clearly much shorter and hence I may be able to typographically resolve the whole word.

WEEK 6
Playing with a different way to compose letters with my hands. I will need to re-do the scans that I made in order to make them sharper. I will also need to scan more hand gestures to make the letters a bit more dynamic. Right now the fingers could just be wagging at you - as if to tell you ‘no’.
The photo at the bottom is by Mandy Barker. I’m re-visiting her work to give me a better sense of direction at this stage in the project.

Interim
- Remove ring
- Change finger placement
- Animate to build in movement
- Think of canvas size and shape
- Does the background have to be black?

An interesting experiment. I took the photos I created of my fingers in the previous experiment and illustrated them instead. This, to me, definitely looks more legible, however it is less confronting. I like that the lines in the letter remind you of finger prints, although that doesn’t really make you think of a repeated behaviour... Could be a good typeface if I was trying to make the word ‘forensic’... Not ideal.

I like the tight cropping on the UN where it is obvious that you are looking at fingers, but I think when the letters are placed together you lose a sense of what you are looking at.

Attempting to make the word Unreasonable out of my hand. I think they convey the idea of repeated hand movement well but they look very static and solid. Very fleshy. Maybe I could animate them to make the idea of repeating a movement more evident.

Seeing as I used my hands to complete my compulsions how do I use them to create the word unreasonable... and incorporate the idea of repetition of action...?

WEEK 5
I found some work by designer Corita Kent which I was really inspired by. I tried to introduce some of her styling into my typographic work. I really like the way these look however I think I’m sort of losing the idea of illegibility and uncertainty in them. They don’t feel emotive enough to me - I would like my work to make people question what they are seeing and perhaps make them feel a bit uncomfortable.
