#BodegaStrike: On February 2, 2017, Yemeni business owners across New York closed 1,000 bodegas and grocery stores from 12:00pm to 8:00pm in response to the Trump administration’s “Muslim Ban” executive order. This shutdown was a public show of the vital role these grocers and their families play in New York’s economic and social fabric. The community organized a rally at Brooklyn Borough Hall in downtown Brooklyn to pray together and share stories of how the Muslim ban has affected their families. 

This was one of the greatest demonstrations of solidarity, love and positivity that I have ever seen. The energy was electric and contagious, I found myself smiling uncontrollably and having so much fun. I hope these photos show that Yemeni Americans are peaceful loving people who deserve to be given a chance at life in this country.

Yemeni bodega workers in New York rally around being American, Muslim and proud

An estimated 1,000 Yemeni-American-run businesses, restaurants and bodegas in New York’s five boroughs shut their doors at noon Thursday for eight hours in an act of protest against Trump’s recently imposed travel restrictions.

And as night fell on the rally at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall scheduled to take place in tandem with Thursday’s bodega closings, show up they did — by the thousands, waving American flags and bearing signs that declared “We need justice.” Read more

Markwayne, likely soured after years of being saddled with a fuckstump of a name, opted to respond to constituents at a town hall meeting who had pointed out that their taxes pay his salary with this logic bomb: “You say you pay for me to do this. Bullcrap. I pay for myself. I paid enough taxes before I got there and continue to through my company to pay my own salary. This is a service. No one here pays me to go.” He apparently has a “real” job and has paid taxes for years, so effectively he pays his own salary as a congressman somehow. Welcome to the fuckstick labyrinth – find your way out before you too become a cock goblin.

Markwayne, you may not realize why everyone thinks you’re a pulsating, prolapsed asshole. I’m confident that you don’t know why everyone thinks you’re an asshole because if you even had the self-awareness of a sea slug, you may have Googled what “public servant” or “by the people and for the people” mean before you decided to play “Lil’ Markwayney the Politics Man” out on the street.

To begin with, even if you were raised by solid gold hyenas in a diamond mine, your job is to represent the unfortunate victims of your bullshit-laden yet tragically successful campaign for office. You went out of your way to be their voice. You chose to be a person who does what the people in your constituency want you to do. That’s the fucking job description. Most people know I have a big personality. I’m eccentric. Hyperactive, if you will. You’ve probably seen me screaming over everything and nothing. What you probably don’t know, because it can’t be seen and I hardly talk about it, is that this is the result of a pretty underrated mental illness called borderline personality disorder, which causes you to feel incredibly strongly and react very drastically. Living with bpd isn’t easy. It’s not easily detectable or recognized. I’ve been called crazy, a drama-starter; I’ve been asked why I can’t just relax and I have done reckless things out of anger, spite, and pain. Though my heart is almost always in the right place, it is easy for me to hurt people by my drastic words and actions. It’s almost impossible for me to control myself when I get upset– it takes over my entire body and I can’t think of anything else until I do something stupid and impulsive to make myself feel better. But once it blows over, it comes with immense guilt and feelings of worthlessness. I’m not saying any of this for attention or sympathy. I love my crazy, borderline self. I love feeling things so intensely, no matter how much it complicates my life. I am saying this to open up the conversation about mental illness. I am not ashamed of mine and you shouldn’t be ashamed of yours either (if you have one) or your struggles in general. How do you expect people to care if you don’t tell anyone? But how do you expect people to open up about this if all you do is tear them down and call them attention-seeking when they do? As someone who plans on going into the mental health field, I am saying all of this because it is so important to be cautious of others’ struggles. Don’t be quick to name-call and put others down. Accept peoples’ apologies, especially when a mental illness is present, because it may make people behave in ways unlike themselves. If you or someone you know has a mental illness, educate yourself on it! You have no idea how much your support can mean to someone, especially to people who have been struggling for years just to hear someone say the words, “It’s okay. I understand.”
