Week 7, Thursday - Repeat Pattern
This pattern worked really well as the connection between the waves create a satisfying stripe. This made the pattern more fluid rather than repeated squares.
What could I do with this pattern?
I want to consider putting this digital repeat pattern onto a lifejacket using photoshop. This will display how the life jacket would look if I was to produce it at a higher quality.

Week 7, Wednesday - Screen Print and Mono Print
Today I produced a screen print and mono print to further my process and practical skills. The screen print didn’t work the way I thought it would because the paint bled from each shape. This because i didn’t use enough pressure on the screen, which causes the paint to leak out of the stencil and it warped the shapes appearance.
The mono print came out different to what I expected but was abstract and looser then my other block images. I was considering layering and the thick patches of blue is where I rested my hand but the great mistake adds a certain depth to the image.
Kieth Haring

Haring has continued to inspire my way of designing, ever since the FMP from last year. The simplicity of his work influenced my process and completely revolutionised my way of working. His work struck social change in the world and defines the meaning of fun within art.His style is completely automatic and improvised but hold a message or moral.

Week 6, Friday - Painting onto Neoprene
Quicksilver Video - Decorating a Wetsuit by Hand
youtube
I came across this quicksilver video while researching how to applied paint to neoprene. I could apply the paint as a screen print but i was worried it would damage my screen. This didn't matter because I was inspired by the raw application of the opaque paint.
Unit 6 Colchester Institute Fashion and Textile BA Hons
The Colchester institute was the only college I applied for as I didn’t want to move away from my current work and life. Moving away isn’t my intention and being able to do my degree on my doorstep is great enough. Fashion itself is costly when it comes to buying materials and being based in London wouldn’t be possible.

I learnt a lot last year about the course when I was model in their show. The exciting garments and the structure of a catwalk.
This year and last year I looked into university such as Central Saint Martins, Westminster and Kingston.
I could imagine myself not being able to cope because the accommodation is so expensive, this would involve me getting a job in London which would distracted me from my study. Where as I could live at home and it wouldn't cost me a penny.
As I now have my own car, my travel to the colchester institute is easy and efficient. If I was to moved to London my accommodation could be located in a different place to my university. There is a certain snobbery that is against the institute because of its location but it has a lot more to offer than any other place.
Small classrooms of eighteen people which is accompanied by 3 tutors sounds great. Compared to other universities that would have 50 students and one teacher. I like to have support from teachers and if you don’t have that support you lose motivation and excitement.
The Fashion and Textiles Head of Colchester, Will explains, that they have 90% job rate after you study. This is something that doesn't even get mentioned when I spoke to other colleges at the UCAS fair. The reason I’m completing a course is so that it will lead me into a creative industry.

Week 6, Thursday - How to Camouflage a Wetsuit
I didn't want my lifejacket to be plain black so i was influenced by this camouflage technique. Using the blue and white opaque paint I applied it using sponges.

Selective with my Drawing
These drawings are from my sketchbook. These work as plan for how i produce my patterns. This is how I play with the composition and decide the placement of my drawing. My next step is to cut directly into paper without drawing before hand, almost carving the shapes by judgement. This is similar to how Matisse produces his work.

Matisse

‘Carving Into Colour’
What are my drawing? Would they be considered a sign, a symbol, an icon or an index?
This is something that I explored in past projects. The drawings that I’m created would be refer to as a symbol.
What is a symbol? what’s the difference?

Week 6, Wednesday - Peer Review
Peer: You sketchbook shows visually what your project involves, however I think it lacks information.
This is where I explained that my research is mostly based on my blog and that use my sketchbook for designing and displying ideas with notes.
Peer: However, your sketchbook should contain some analytical response to research and i should obtain sentences as well as keywords.
This is something i need to improve on as I would say that my sketchbook isn’t as full of visuals as some of my other projects.

Week 5, Friday - More Designs from Children and Research on Cody Hudson

Cody Hudson is a Chicago based artist born in 1971, also known for his graphic design contributions under the name Struggle Inc. Known for the production of clean, multi-dimensional graphics, Cody’s design aesthetic is part urban modernism, and part organic visual deconstruction.
Cody would actually fall asleep while painting and wake up after dropping the brush. He started going to rave parties in Milwaukee and Chicago and eventually ended up throwing a party. To save money he designed the flyer himself. After that cody stopped doing parties and instead did flyers. By doing those flyers he learned about things like CMYK - this is used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black).
He designed his own flyers for raves, which is similar to what I’m trying to express through my patterns. The two designs from the children were very inspiring as they show the aspects of the parks scenery. The patterns that I make I are suppose to relate to the wake park and the icons and symbols ares inspired by children and my own imagination.

Week 5, Thursday - Homemade Screen Printing Feather Pattern onto Fabric

On amazon, I purchased my own screen printer and my own fabric inks. This is because I was inspired by an artist called Barbara De Ru who has an instagram account @bobbin.hood. I was heavily inspired by her homemade aesthetic and how simple and easy it can be. I always find the process on printing very time consuming and it would usually take a whole day to get one or two of the same prints.
Barbara De Ru

Barbara used to create women's fashion labels, big industry icons and well-known fashion labels. But as she grew up, her sense of fairness grew stronger. So Barbara - who's always cooking things up - decided she wanted to raise her girls differently. Going through her own wardrobe she noticed a lot of items were 'fair' already, but in the girls closet there was not much fairness going on.

Like all good things have a beginning, this one started off with a closet raid. Barbara and her oldest daughter slayed the fashion industry dragons at home and started their own castle - one that is fair, unique, fun and accessible. Something everybody can join in on, and something special to everybody.
FAIR | UNIQUE | FUN | ACCESSIBLE
These words relate to my project from last year in graphic design when I explored who designed the icons for macinitosh.
Susan Kare
Susan Kare is a graphic designer and pioneer in pixel art, who created many of the interface elements for the Apple Macintosh in the 1980s. At a time where computers seemed cold and intimidating. Susan wanted to change that, by creating icons that were friendly and relatable. She was able to create it in a humanised way that it was universally recognised. The icons were clear, concise and memorable.

Week 5, Wednesday - Helen Dardik and Colour Combinations
Illustrator and designer who is known for her brightly colored illustrations. She is a mother of three girls who are the to key to her art work. She is constantly inspired by the way her children draw and interpret things. She intakes in there simplicity and innocents structure for shape. She describes children to have an infinite imagination.
I love Helen’s unconventional use of color and how she uses graphic elements and space in her work. She is clearly influenced by mid century design and Scandinavian design. Helen also loves to travel, and her work is inspired by her travels with her family.

Her colour combinations are her main attractions. She knows what colours work with one another. For example mint and blue give this fresh and rich apperance.
Could I relate this to research I already looked at?
How colours effect moods - Blue is a calming color
I want my work to have an impact on children’s happiness and wellbeing. I going to remain using bright colours as its a visual attraction to the primitive age. I also want it to impact other ages such as teenagers and adults as I believe they all grow up too fast. Proving that your childhood is the best time of your life and that you don’t need to detach yourself from it.
