headcanon.   carlos’s selective mutism is usually worst when he knows someone is expecting an answer for him. it’s slightly easier for him to say a word or two to get someone’s attention, partly because he can allow himself time to get his head in order so that he can speak, but talking directly at him and expecting an answer can make him lock down, especially if the question can’t be answered with a simple nod or shake of head: he’ll end up moving his jaw as if to open his mouth---never parting his lips---before going back, eyes focused elsewhere as his mind goes through the hundreds of images that could form the answer but won’t turn to words.
