You put countless hours into beating it: collecting items, maxing out stats, and finding all the secrets it has to offer.

Soon after, you beat the game.

However, maybe the ending isn’t satisfying, or you crave more gameplay and content. What do you do? The game is over, there’s nothing left.

Coming to your aid is DLC or downloadable content – which thankfully has become a big part of the gaming business.

DLC allows game developers to continue to work on their games, adding new content and new additions that can modify gameplay greatly.

Games can be extended through new story missions, extra weapons, new secret areas, and more. There have been some truly great DLCs…and some DLCs that proved to be more of a train wreck than a benefit to the game’s overall presentation.

DLC also allows the game developer to go back and perhaps fix issues that plague the game that they weren’t able to fix or get to before the deadline of the game’s release. DLC can truly be the redeeming quality for developers and gamers alike.

I’m going to tell you about the different types of DLC, the best and the worst DLC released.

There MAY be spoilers ahead, so beware, reader!

Types of Downloadable Content

Back in 2008, I was playing Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360. I won’t drop any spoilers for those who haven’t finished it, but let’s just say that the ending left a lot to be desired.

The player plays these games for hours on end, investing their time, emotions, and intellect into a story of a game only to have it not deliver. It can be demoralizing.

Luckily for myself and others, Bethesda eventually developed extensive DLC to modify Fallout 3. It was a great experience, I was thrust back into the rich world of post-apocalyptic Washington D.C.

This is but one type of DLC, in my opinion, the best form that is offered to us gamers.

Story-based DLC

Like my example of DLC above, story-based adds new things to the game’s story.

It is either in the form of new quests or new characters, hopefully making your gaming experience more cohesive.

I personally love this form of DLC. With Fallout 3, it came in the form of Broken Steel, which fundamentally changed the ending, (or rather expanded upon it), and threw the player into a new set of adventures that added extreme longevity to the game, and added a new free-roam aspect to the game that was sorely lacking before.

Bethesda continued this tradition with their other Fallout games, as well as heavily modifying The Elder Scrolls Skyrim. Skyrim, along with having extensive modding capabilities, has received countless DLC packages since its release in 2011.

This allows for new, creative ideas to enter the fold and enchant gamers past the last chapter of the game’s story.

Extra Content

There’s nothing like downloading crazy new weapons or characters into one of your favorite games. One of my personal favorite games, Crusader Kings II, constantly gets updates and cool DLC all of the time.

The game started out in 2012 as a bare-bones strategy game set in the Middle Ages. Over the years, you got chances to play as new nations, have new strategic options, and new historical scenarios as well as new achievements.

This type of DLC keeps the game running for years to come – without necessarily upping the difficulty level. The developers of Crusader Kings II could have easily just released the base game in 2012, but they stuck with it, and make it seem new with every update.

This is a pretty broad category, including new characters, weapons, quests, and other features.

Best Downloadable Content

1. Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and The Damned

This is one of the best DLC packages of the late 2000s. I personally loved Grand Theft Auto IV and the dark, sometimes humorous tale of Niko Bellic and his bloody quest of revenge through Liberty City.

It was a pretty lengthy game, but I still found myself sad that it was over when I finally got there. Luckily for me, Rockstar released two episodic DLCs after its release.

The Lost and the Damned, released in 2009, giving the player control of rough and gruff biker named Johnny who rode with the tough biker gang, the Lost. This was a great way to breathe new life into Grand Theft Auto IV, and it added new weapons, new vehicles, and a great story.

The Ballad of Gay Tony was released later in 2009, and it followed nightclub bouncer Luis and his dealings with his boss, the titular Gay Tony.

This was a great piece of DLC, not only because it added insane new weapons and features, but it also evoked imagery from earlier titles, specifically Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

These two ‘episodes’ released by Rockstar are some of the best examples of how to do DLC right. You can tell that a lot of love, work, and passion went into creating funny, witty writing and that iconic GTA gameplay we all know and love.

2. Fallout 3 DLC

After Fallout 3’s ending, one where there was no choice as to what you did and didn’t allow you to play afterward, was disappointing, to say the least. With DLC Broken Steel, Bethesda remedied this issue by changing the story minorly with big results.

As the player character, you wake up in a Brotherhood of Steel base, and you continue the story. Not only that, but the maximum level cap in the game rose by 10, adding new incentives to the gameplay.

I think Broken Steel may be one of the most significant in the manner in which it addresses the story, but the other DLCs that were eventually released for Fallout 3 were great in their own right.

Point Lookout, released in summer 2009, was perhaps my favorite. It has the main character taking a ship from The Capitol Wasteland to southern Maryland, near the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River.

The player is thrust into an eerie, atmospheric environment and story that is unlike anything else I’ve ever played. It’s always creepy, with insane new enemies lurking around every corner.

I remember finding an ‘abandoned’ cabin in the woods late at night. Of course, I wanted to loot the hell out of it, so I went inside. I wasn’t careful, though, and I heard ‘FOUND YA!’ behind me.

What I saw was a grotesque, inbred swamp dweller. Not only did it add horror to the game, but it created new, vivid experiences that I’ll never forget.

3. Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening

This expansion did much of what Fallout 3’s Broken Steel did. After the end of Dragon Age: Origins, the player character isn’t able to play after the main quest is done. In this case, it makes sense. Your story is complete and, (hopefully), you get the ending you want.

Awakening throws you back into the rich world of Thedas, where the Darkspawn threatening the world has been defeated.

However, there remains a lurking threat that needs dealing with. Who better to deal with it than you? You can either return as your accomplished character or create a new one and jump right back into the RPG goodness.

Like all good RPG DLC, the level cap was increased, and important new choices were included, as well as terrifying new enemies.

4. Oblivion – Shivering Isles

This one is a trip. You know Bethesda is great at world-building, and this is no exception. The player character is transported to the wild world of the Shivering Isles, governed by the mad Daedric Prince Sheogorath. The Isles are split into two sections: dementia and mania.

All the characters are unique and weird, culminating in your meeting with Sheogorath himself, an unhinged god with a Scottish accent.

The environment is so unique and strangely beautiful, consisting of beautiful vibrant colors, as well as melancholy and dark imagery for an experience you’ll never forget.

Worst DLC

1. Oblivion – Horse Armor

Yep, you knew it would show up eventually. The infamous Oblivion horse armor was one of the first DLC for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Oblivion was such an iconic game, and so gamers expected nothing less when it came to the upcoming possibilities of DLC.

But compared to DLCs like Shivering Isles, this one is just downright insulting to players. It allows you to equip your horse with armor. Yep, that’s it: that’s the DLC. You go to a stable and get a free set of either Elven or steel horse armor. It’s downright insulting.

Designer Joel Burgess still defends their decisions:

“…more interesting DLCs were built on the back of the horse armor…there’s something to be said for giving the internet something to make fun of. You know you’ve made it, I guess.”

2. The Sims

This hurts me because I’m a huge Sims fan. However, their model of releasing DLC is insane. Sometimes you’ll see The Sims on sale, and you think, “Hey, that sounds great, there’s a lot of content.” STOP RIGHT THERE.

That’s just the base game. There are hundreds of DLC packs equaling hundreds of dollars.

It’s just not feasible for a gamer on a budget. While the DLC may be ‘good’, the method and volume in which they’re released are just not realistic.

You ideally want all of the best DLC, but the list is huge.

The tragedy is that there are some truly great DLCs, but you can easily become overwhelmed by how many choices you have, and the sheer amount of money it would cost to outfit your copy of the Sims with the best content.

As of July 2018, if you wanted to have the COMPLETE Sims 4 experience, you would need to drop an insane $500+ dollars to acquire all DLC. On sale, it’s still $300+ dollars.

A small consolation. That should be considered a crime.

3. Dragon Age: Origins

Okay, so this is more an issue with the method of accessing the DLC. The DLC itself is pretty decent, but the way that it’s presented is…a little deceptive and underhanded.

You’ll run into a man named Levy Dryden at your camp amongst your NPC friends. He waxes and wanes about a quest he needs you to do. Nice rewards, new quest, glory; what’s not to like? Except once you want to accept, it pops u saying you need to purchase the DLC quest.

What gives, EA? I remember rejecting the quest out of sheer irritation.

4. Destiny: The Taken King

I remember sinking a lot of hours into Destiny’s raids and getting loot. It was a lot of work, but I leveled up pretty high.

Then the game kind of petered out. I liked it, but there needed to be more.

Then the Taken King came out, and something bad happened. New content, new story missions, and everything; things that Destiny needed.

However, the Taken King made some controversial changes to the base game that left others, myself included, a little frustrated. Content that was available and a standard part of the game was locked.

That meant that players that had not bought The Taken King would be locked out of day one content.

This was a cheap move by Bungie, who has millions of fans who were part of a dedicated fan base.

It was a bitter pill: while the DLC was good, Bungie still essentially forced players to buy it whether they wanted to or not.

Conclusion

As you can see, DLC can be some of the best, and worst, aspects of a game. It can breathe new life into a rich world, allowing the player to enter new environments and engaging new characters.

Other DLC can add simple aesthetic items that really serve no purpose. Overall, DLC is a great way to keep a game selling and fans satisfied with the developers’ creative vision.

The electron was discovered by J.J. Thomson in 1897. The existence of protons was also known, as was the fact that atoms were neutral in charge. In Thomson’s model, the atom is composed of electrons (which Thomson still called “corpuscles,” though G. Stoney had proposed that atoms of electricity be called electrons in 1894) surrounded by a soup of positive charge to balance the electrons’ negative charges, like negatively charged “plums” surrounded by positively charged “pudding”.

A major alteration to John Dalton's atomic theory was discovered in the mid 1800's: atoms were found not to be invisible, they in fact contained smaller particles. In 1898, an English physicist named J.J. Thomson discovered the electron when he found that electrically charged plates and magnets deflected a cathode ray in a certain way, which indicated that the particles making up the ray must be negatively charged. Later, the mass of an electron was found to be 2000 times smaller than that of the smallest atom, a hydrogen atom, which led Thomson to believe that atoms must also be filled with other heavier particles. In addition, atoms were at the time known to be electrically neutral, indicating that there must be some positively charged particles present to balance out the negative charge of the electrons. Based on all of this information, Thomson created the Plum Pudding Model (so called because of its resemblance to an English desert). This Pudding model represented his real atom model: in the shape of a sphere made of physical positively charged matter with electrons distributed throughout evenly due to electrostatic charge. To progress on all of these ideas, Ernest Rutherford, a student of J.J. Thomson, decided that the center of the atom was a nucleus and was surrounded by orbiting electrons. He determined this by performing the famous Gold Foil Experiment, where positively charged alpha particles were beamed through a thin piece of gold foil. Some of these alpha particles were deflected, meaning some type of positively charged matter inside the atoms of the gold foil were repelling the positively charged alpha particles. This would only have been possible if the positive charge was concentrated within the atom; thus leading to the nucleus, Latin for 'little nut'. The rest of the atom seemed to not be made of any matter, and most of the mass of the atom was labeled as being the nucleus.

First, let’s start with some basic troubleshooting. Open Messages > Preferences > Accounts and make sure you’re signed in with your Apple ID here. Also make sure under “You can be reached for messages at” your Apple ID is listed here. If not, then click “Add Email” and add your Apple ID. If these settings are correct, then try signing out of your Apple ID here and then sign back in.

On vehicles that have dipsticks, the automatic transmission fluid level should be checked monthly with the transmission at full operating temperature and the engine idling. Around 15 minutes of driving is typically required to fully warm up the transmission. You can check the fluid level in six easy steps:

1. Stop the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake and allow the engine to idle. 2. Apply the brake pedal and move the gear selector through all gear positions, pausing for a few seconds in each. Then, place the transmission in park or neutral as specified in your owner’s manual. 3. Open the hood, locate the transmission dipstick and carefully remove it making sure to avoid any hot or moving engine parts. 4. Wipe the dipstick clean with a rag, and note the level markings near its end. Some dipsticks have one mark for FULL and another for ADD, some have small holes that indicate the maximum and minimum oil levels, and some have crosshatch markings to designate the acceptable fluid range. 5. Insert the dipstick fully back into its tube, then remove it and read the level. 6. If the fluid level is at or below the ADD mark, add enough fluid to bring the level up to the FULL mark. Do not overfill. Typically, the distance between the ADD and FULL marks is equal to one pint of fluid.

When checking the fluid level, also inspect its color. New automatic transmission fluid has a red or pink tint. Fluid that is reddish-amber to medium brown has been in service for some time, but a color change of this type is normal and not a cause for immediate fluid replacement. However, a dark brown or black color is a sign of deteriorated fluid that needs to be changed. Fluids that have a milky appearance, or smell burnt, indicate more serious transmission problems that call for diagnosis by a qualified auto mechanic as soon as possible. As already mentioned, many newer cars never need transmission fluid changes, or changes are required only at extended intervals. However, millions of cars on the road still need regular transmission fluid replacement. The recommended intervals for this service will vary, depending on the car’s factory maintenance schedule and whether the vehicle is used in normal or severe service. In some cases, the transmission contains a filter that is changed at the same time as the fluid. Consult your owner’s manual to identify the intervals appropriate for your car and the type of driving you do. When having the transmission fluid changed, make sure the auto repair shop uses a replacement fluid that meets the automaker’s specifications. For the common cache, you can clear them with the tool iSunshare System Genius which works well on clearing Windows junk files including temporary files/data cache/font cache/thumbnail cache/manifest cache, etc. By using such a helpful tool, you can erase the general cache within a few clicks instead of deleting them in different places.

3 Steps to use System Genius

Step 1: Install iSunshare System Genius on your Windows 10 PC.

Step 2: Launch the tool and choose Junk File to get the Scan button. After that, hit Scan to scan Windows 10 for junk files.

Step 3: In the result section, uncheck the Junk file scan result option firstly. Then check temporary files and other cache items. At last, click Clean to wipe them from your system.

4. Close Unnecessary Background Programs

Although background programs can update themselves automatically, send you the notification, etc, it can consume the power, use the bandwidth and eat up system resources like RAM on the other side. 6. Disable Rare-to-Use Startup Programs

After you upgrade to Microsoft Office 2013/2016/Office 365, you experience one or more of the following symptoms:

The computer uses more memory when you open multiple Microsoft Excel 2013 workbooks, save Excel workbooks, or make calculations in Excel workbooks.

You can no longer open as many Excel workbooks in the same instance as you could before you upgraded to Excel 2013/2016.

When you insert columns in an Excel workbook, you receive an error about available memory.

When you are working with an Excel spreadsheet, you receive the following error message:

Cause

Starting in Excel 2013, improvements were made that require more system resources than earlier versions required. This article identifies areas in Excel workbooks that use lots of memory and describes how you can make your workbook files work more efficiently.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. If the one of these methods does not help, move on to the next method.

Note

Many Excel workbooks have several issues that can problems. After you eliminate these issues, your workbook will run more smoothly.

Formatting considerations

Formatting can cause Excel workbooks to become so large that they do not work correctly. Frequently, Excel hangs or crashes because of formatting issues.

Method 1: Eliminate excessive formatting

Excessive formatting in an Excel workbook can cause the file to grow and can cause poor performance. Formatting would be considered excessive if you formatted whole columns or rows with color or borders. This problem also occurs when formatting requires data to be copied or imported from webpages or databases. To eliminate excess formatting, use the format cleaner add-in that is available in Clean excess cell formatting on a worksheet.

If you continue to experience issues after you eliminate excess formatting, move on to method 2.

Method 2: Remove unused styles

You can use styles to standardize the formats that you use throughout workbooks. When cells are copied from one workbook to another, their styles are also copied. These styles continue to make the file grow and may eventually cause the 'Too many different cell formats' error message in Excel when you save back to older file versions.

Many utilities are available that remove unused styles. As long as you are using an XML-based Excel workbook (that is, an .xlsx file or an. xlsm file), you can use the style cleaner tool. You can find this tool here.

If you continue to experience issues after you remove any unused styles, move on to method 3.

Method 3: Remove shapes

Adding lots of shapes in a spreadsheet also requires lots of memory. A shape is defined as any object that sits on the Excel grid. Some examples are as follows:

Charts

Drawing shapes

Comments

Clip art

SmartArt

Pictures

WordArt

Frequently, these objects are copied from webpages or other worksheets and are hidden or are sitting on one another. Frequently, the user is unaware that they are present.

To check for shapes, follow these steps:

On the Home Ribbon, click Find and Select, and then click Selection Pane.

Click The Shapes on this Sheet. Shapes are displayed in the list.

Remove any unwanted shapes. (The eye icon indicates whether the shape is visible.)

Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each worksheet.

If you continue to experience issues after you remove shapes, you should examine considerations that are not related to formatting.

Method 4: Remove conditional formatting

Conditional formatting can cause the file to grow. This occurs when the conditional formatting in the file is corrupted. You can remove the conditional formatting, as a test to see if the problem is with corruption in the formatting. To remove conditional formatting, follow these steps:

Save a backup of the file.

On the Home Ribbon, click Conditional Formatting.

Clear rules from the whole worksheet.

Follow steps 2 and 3 for each worksheet in the workbook.

Save the workbook by using a different name.

See if the problem is resolved.

If removing conditional formatting resolves the issue, you can open the original workbook, remove conditional formatting, and then reapply it.

Problem remains?

If none of these methods work, you may consider moving to a 64-bit version of Excel, breaking your problem workbook into different workbooks, or contacting Support for additional troubleshooting.

Calculation considerations

In addition to formatting, calculations can also cause crashing and hanging in Excel.

Method 1: Open the workbook in the latest version of Excel

How To Clear Up Ram Space

Opening an Excel workbook for the first time in a new version of Excel may take a long time if the workbook contains lots of calculations. To open the workbook for the first time, Excel has to recalculate the workbook and verify the values in the workbook. For more information, see the following articles:

If the file continues to open slowly after Excel recalculates the file completely and you save the file, move on to method 2.

Method 2: Formulas

Look through your workbook and examine the kinds of formulas that you are using. Some formulas take lots of memory. These include the following array formulas:

LOOKUP

INDIRECT

OFFSETS

INDEX

MATCH

It's fine to use them. However, be aware of the ranges that you are referencing.

Formulas that reference whole columns could cause poor performance in .xlsx files. The grid size grew from 65,536 rows to 1,048,576 rows and from 256 (IV) columns to 16,384 (XFD) columns. A popular way to create formulas, although not a best practice, was to reference whole columns. If you were referencing just one column in the old version, you were including only 65,536 cells. In the new version, you're referencing more than 1 million columns.

Assume that you have the following VLOOKUP:

In Excel 2003 and earlier versions, this VLOOKUP was referencing a whole row that included only 655,560 cells (10 columns x 65,536 rows). However, with the new, larger grid, the same formula references almost 10.5 million cells (10 columns x 1,048,576 rows = 10,485,760).

This is fixed in Office 2016/365 version 1708 16.0.8431.2079 and later. For information on how to update Office, please see Install Office updates.

For earlier versions of Office you may need to reconstruct your formulas to reference only those cells that are required for your formulas.

Note

Check your defined names to make sure that you don't have other formulas that reference whole columns or rows.

Note

This scenario will also occur if you use whole rows.

If you continue experience issues after you change your formulas to refer only to cells that are being used, move on to method 3.

Method 3: Calculating across workbooks

Limit the formulas that are doing the calculations across workbooks. This is important for two reasons:

You are trying to open the file over the network.

Excel is trying to calculate large amounts of data.

Instead of doing calculations across networks, contain the formula in one workbook, and then create a simple link from one workbook to another.

If you continue to experience the issue after you change your formulas to refer only to cells instead of calculating across workbooks, move on to method 4.

Method 4: Volatile functions

Limit the use of the volatile functions in a workbook. You do not have to have hundreds of cells that use the TODAY or NOW function. If you have to have the current date and time in your spreadsheet, use the function one time, and then reference the function through a defined name of a link.

If you continue to experience the issue after you limit your volatile formulas, move on to method 5.

Method 5: Array formulas

Array formulas are powerful. But they must be used correctly. It is important not to add more cells to your array than you must have. When a cell in your array has a formula that requires calculation, calculation occurs for all cells that are referenced in that formula.

If you continue to experience the issue after you update your array formulas, move on to method 6.

Method 6: Defined names

Defined names are used to reference cells and formulas throughout the workbook to add a 'friendly name' to your formulas. You should check for any defined names that link to other workbooks or temporary Internet files. Typically, these links are unnecessary and slow down the opening of an Excel workbook.

You can use the Name Manager tool to view hidden defined names that you can't see in the Excel interface. This tool enables you to view and delete the defined names that you don't need.

If Excel continues to crash and hang after you remove any unnecessary defined names, move on to method 7.

How To Free Ram Space

Method 7: Links and hyperlinks

Excel's power is in its ability to bring in live data from other spreadsheets. Take an inventory of the file and the external files to which it is linking. Excel doesn't have a limit on how many Excel workbooks can be linked, although there are several issues that you can encounter. Test the file without the links to determine whether the issue is in this file or in one of the linked files.

Moving on

These are the most common issues that cause hanging and crashing in Excel. If you are still experiencing crashing and hanging in Excel, you should consider opening a support ticket with Microsoft.

Postgresql Brew

In our previous post, we installed PostgreSQL via Homebrew and got our own little cluster up and running under our userid. That is probably good enough for 90% of the users out there who just want to play with or devel on PostgreSQL, but for those of us who need a little more flexibility in our installs, we’re going to take the next step.

Homebrew is a package manager for Mac OS X that builds software from its source code. It includes a version of PostgreSQL packaged by what it refers to as a formula. This type of installation might be preferred by people who are comfortable using the command line to install programs, such as software developers. Typical use looks like.

I install Postgresql on my Ubuntu with: brew install postgres now I have: psql -version psql (PostgreSQL) 9.5.0 How can I start the service automatically? On my Mac with homebrew I can do it.

This is what I followed to install postgres: Pre-Reqs. Brew doctor brew update.

Brew postgresql-upgrade-database This formula has created a default database cluster with: initdb -locale=C -E UTF-8 $(brew -prefix)/var/postgres.

First, if you have any data in your existing cluster that you want to preserve, let’s backup it up. We’re just going to use pg_dumpall here since it’s quick-n-dirty:

Now, we can stop our cluster:

And uninstall the current PostgreSQL:

And remove the remnants of our cluster:

Now we’ve got a clean slate. So, let’s tell Homebrew to stop using the default PostgreSQL and use Peter Eisentraut’s version (if you don’t know, Peter actually contributes to PostgreSQL):

As of this writing, Peter makes PostgreSQL 8.3 and above available. However, only PostgreSQL 9.2 and above are officially supported by the PostgreSQL community. So let’s install the supported versions:

As it says in the output, these are ‘keg-only’, which has the nice side effect that they are automatically installed in side-by-side directories /usr/local/opt/postgresql-9.1/ etc.

Peter configures PostgreSQL with just about all the options turned on:

and you get all the extensions that are in ‘contrib’ as well. However, if you find that you need to install another extension, I advocate using pex. You would install it like this:

Sadly, it will reinstall the default PostgreSQL brew recipe, but we’ll simply pretend that it’s not there going forward. Once installed, use pex like so:

As you can see, the ip4r extension was installed into my PostgreSQL 9.4 instance.

Now, you might be wondering how to deal with all these concurrent versions. If you type pg_dump which one will you get? How can you force it to use a specific version? Right now, you won’t get any version, since it’s not in your path. You will need to specify exactly what you want:

which is a huge pita. So, let’s make a little convenience function in our shell. Edit your .zshrc or your .bashrc (or whatever) and add a function like this:

and then simply call pg 9.5 to set PostgreSQL 9.5 as your ‘active’ instance:

Restore your data:

and there you be. Ain’t it beautiful? :)

Update

In Homebrew 1.5 and above, there’s a new process to upgrade yourPostgres database across major versions using the brew postgresql-upgrade-databasecommand which was recently added by Mike McQuaid.

This is a fantastic one-step improvement over the lengthy guide you’llsee below, but since this new command isn’t foolproof (it will fail ifyou haven’t killed all processes connected to your database) it seemslike a good idea to still understand the way it works behind the scenes.

I’ve learned a cool new trick from Homebrew’s upgrade command however and youcan find it in the last section of this updated post.

Accidental Homebrew Upgrades

This guide assumes that you recently ran brew upgrade postgresql anddiscovered to your dismay that you accidentally bumped from one majorversion to another: say 9.3.x to 9.4.x. Yes, that is a major versionbump in PG land.

Some of the common signs of this issue are the following statements inyour logs:

No need to panic. Your data should be fine. While you’ve upgraded the Postgreslibrary, your existing databases have not been removed. They simply need to beupgraded to run with the new library.

Important Caveat for Non-Incremental Upgrades

The process I describe below will work for incrementalversion updates: for example 9.5 to 9.6. But it will probably not workif you jump versions: for example 9.5 to 10.0.

In order to upgrade properly you will first need to downgrade thePostgres version in Homebrew to the version directly after the one ofyour data directory.

How do you figure out what version your data directory uses? Ask it.

There we go. And what is your currently activated Postgres version inHomebrew?

Good. If you find yourself one step further than you should be, sayon 10.0 like I was. You can do the following to step back down to9.6:

Couldn’t you use this to go back to Postgres 9.5? Yes, you could. Butit’s never a bad idea to stay up to date with newer versions, so whynot use the opportunity to be less worried about upgrades?

Now, check the active version of Postgres with:

Checking Versions

You can check all the versions of postgres that are installed inHomebrew with:

In this case you can see that I don’t have Postgres 9.6 installed in theusual postgres formula, since I had to specifically install that versionin order to be able to upgrade from 9.5 withbrew install [email protected].

So there are 5 different versions of PostgreSQL installed on my machinein different subfolders. We can find out where those are with:

As you can see I have my old versions installed in/usr/local/Cellar/postgresql/. And what about this new [email protected]?

That one’s in a standalone directory:

One final check to make sure we have the correct versions of thePostgres commands running:

This means that the pg_upgrade binary we’ll be using is also the newone. But let’s not assume:

Good good.

Mise en place

The directory where your actual database data is stored is differentfrom the one where your PostgreSQL binaries are installed. Homebrewinstalls the data directory in /usr/local/var/postgres/ and doesn’ttouch that data folder when you upgrade from one version to the next.This is a good thing because if Homebrew tried to install a brand newdatabase (with initdb) it could squash all your existing data.

First I recommend moving your existing data to a directory with adifferent name:

Now that the old data directory has been “moved”, you can safely createa brand new clean database:

Your output will be slightly different. For one, the user won’t beolivierlacan but whatever your system user is. You can find that outeasily with whoami.

Interesting to note, but if you use PostgreSQL with Rails. This meansthere will be no password on your development database, so you can skipthe password field in database.yml or leave it *completely empty.

Shutting Things Down

First we have to make sure both database servers are not running when wedo the upgrade:

If you get the following message it’s possible that you have PG inlaunchctl which may prevent you from stopping the server:

In that case let’s remove PG from launchctl for now, you can add it backlater by following the instructions given on brew info postgres:

Then try stopping the server again:

This would be good news:

If you’re using a recent version of Homebrew (as you should), then it’slikely you’re using Homebrew Services instead of launchctl to managepersistent processes like postgres. So use this instead:

While Homebrew Services should do the job of stopping postgres, it’s notguaranteed that you don’t have a server process connected to postgresand locking it’s pid (process ID) file. It’s always a good idea tocheck for that file which may exist at/usr/local/var/postgres/postmaster.pid. If it does, remove it withrm /usr/local/var/postgres/postmaster.pid and you’ll save yourselfsome surprises later on.

Upgrading

I’ve based this article on the fairly detailed pg_upgrade guide in thePostgreSQL documentation. If you have specific needs (very largedata directory for example), you should consult it too. This sectionis also not specific to a macOS Homebrew install of Postgres since ituses the same commands you should be able to use on other operatingsystems like Linux.

Assuming you’re dealing with the same version numbers I’m dealing with(you probably aren’t, so change them when running this on your machine),this is what the pg_upgrade command should look like when you run it:

Lowercase flags (-b and -d) are for old binary and datadirectories respectively. Their uppercase counterparts are for their newequivalents.

I really dislike short form flags because they make self-descriptive discoveryvery difficult so here is the alternative with long-form flags:

How nice is this?

You should see the following output immediately if the upgrade processis starting:

You’re done!

Restarting

You manually shut down PG during this upgrade so now it won’t be runningunless you follow the (old) brew info postgres instructions:

With Homebrew Services, the operation is even simpler:

Once PG is running you could run the optimization script recommended bypg_upgrade. It was created in whichever directory you ran pg_upgradein, and you can run it with:

Troubleshooting

You may encounter the following error:

This means you have at least one PG server running. So go back to thebeginning of this section and make real sure you shut down all yourservers.

You can also check this pg_upgrade_server.log file to be certain ofthe issue. It should be located in/usr/local/var/log/pg_upgrade_server.log but you can always use thefind command to locate it:

When using brew postgresql-upgrade-database, this log should containthe reason the upgrade process failed as well as the actual commandused, which will be very useful for you to restart the upgrade processmanually.

I’ve found that running brew postgresql-upgrade-database again afteran initial failed attempt usually results in an error message sayingthat the data was already upgraded when it’s not actually true or atleast the process hasn’t fully completed.

You can see how this script works by checking its source code. Itseems like it’s comparing the Homebrew-installed version to theversion of the currently active Postgres database inside of the /var/postgresdata directory. It references the PostgreSQL documentation upgrade articleas well. The only notable difference with the instructions I’ve listed aboveis the use of the -j flag, which defines how many threads or processes thepg_upgrade command will use. Homebrew sets that number toHardware::CPU.cores.to_s which would be 2, 4, 6 or more CPU cores your machinemay have to handle CPU-intensive tasks like these.

However I’d recommend not doing this since you may have operations alreadyusing some CPU on your machine. My best tip is to use one less core than yourtotal, which I learned from this excellent Thoughbot blog post on parallelRubyGem install configuration for Bundler:

Not much new to say about the venerable 700R4 transmission Chevy by General Motors. Used almost exclusively by Chevy and GM in nearly every circumstance an automatic overdrive transmission was deemed necessary. Other automatic overdrives were available for General Motors cars, their success never equaled that of the T700 and those were eventually dropped.

It was discontinued in about 1992 or ’93 for the computerized version called a 4L60E. Although the design was barely changed except for using full electronic controls. I’m a GM person and without being too biased, would say that the 700 may be the best and most impact-full transmission ever made. I think a lot of people agree with me.

It would be hard to find a good used unit with low miles, as I mentioned they were discontinued in roughly 1992. With that in mind, a rebuilt T700R4 is the obvious choice. I think the cost will surprise you, on the low and affordable side, so bear with me.

I own a mint condition 1988 GMC 1 ton 4 wheel drive pickup (not a duallie) which I bought brand new on Feb. 16th 1988. It only has 94,000 miles on it. I adore my truck, it is not very fancy and has few luxuries except for air conditioning, I challenge any new truck owners truck to out drive my gem, track better, stop better and have the same sold ride control. Ha, Ha!

But that is not my point. When I bought it it had a 3 speed automatic transmission in it, which worked great, but without overdrive it got 10 miles per gallon, period. In about 2000 before I sold my transmission shop of 26 years (sold in 2006), I decided to swap the 3 speed for a T-700R4, I wanted better gas mileage. Turned out to get 15 to 16 on the highway, not great, but what an improvement.

I’ll get more involved in the changeover at another time, suffice it to say it is almost a complete factory bolt in, basically unnoticeable if done right. What I want to mention is how we rebuilt the transmission and why updating it at that time is so important.

After a complete disassemble job and clean up with ultrasonic equipment we got down to brass tacks. We used one grade better than factory original clutch plates (called hi-energy), a factory seal and gasket set, all brand new bushings and bearings, hi-energy band, and an update kit. We installed all upgraded parts, a rebuilt torque converter, an auxiliary transmission cooler and used fully synthetic automatic transmission fluid.
