they’ve been listening for what’s felt like hours , when in reality it’s been… minutes. felix has been trying to focus on their case and get it solved when someone decided to let just about anyone into their office. they’ll have to check with the front desk on what THAT is about. they clear their throat and run a hand through their mess of curls. “ i see , “ they begin. “ now , what is it that you want us to do ? “
“M’am,” Cora interrupted the complaining woman that sat on the other side of Felix’s desk, “That uniformed officer right over there is probably best equipped to help you.” And with a gentle, but forceful, hand Cora lead the woman out and then promptly replaced her in the chair. “I’m gonna cut right to the chase here,” she said before taking a deep breath, “I think that you and I should work together on finding out who has been attacking this city.” A hunter and wolf working together? It was unheard of. But as the only other detective in the NYPD who actually knew what was going on, Cora had no else to turn to but them.

Cassius nodded curtly. Of course he knew she’d tell the Council, that she was doing all she could. But he was uneasy about this entire thing, and had to hear it straight from the source. It didn’t make him feel any better. “ Any theories ? From one family to another ? “ he asked, his eyes finding hers knowingly. While he didn’t always trust the code of hunters, Cora has yet to make him think of her as anything but reliable. And she’s the one who’s been trained to know about all different species – perhaps whatever species did this.
She wished she had an answer for him, she really did. Her entire job was to hunt down the guilty and so far she had absolutely nothing; it was beyond frustrating. “No,” she had to admit with a sigh. At least he wasn’t her Captain, so Cora felt like she could speak a little more freely and the few thoughts on the profile that she was creating in her head flowed out of her. “Whomever did this was extremely careful. But there’s no way that these events have been...spontaneous. They’ve planned it out, every detail, for years maybe. They want to spread fear, cause panic, make sure everyone is talking about them. I bet they’re thinking very highly of themselves as well right now.”

Thea gave the woman a small smile, a rare genuine one. “ Yeah, I am, “ she nodded slowly, looking at her feet for a minute. “ You too, I hope ? And the rest of the family ? “ FAMILY. It was such a strange word to be using, and the brunette wasn’t sure she liked it. The wolf took a deep breath. “ Listen, “ Thea started, glancing back up at her. “ I’m sorry for the other day. I… I went through some stuff, stuff I don’t even remember very well, and all the memories coming to my head kind of was a lot. It’s been tough to deal with. “
“Yes, we’re all okay, just a few cuts and bruises” she told Thea and she thanked god for it. It felt like the fire had been targeting the founding families in particular. A few moments of awkward silence filled the air, Cora still so unsure what to say around her, before Thea spoke. “I can’t imagine what you’re going through,” she said when her cousin had finished speaking, “And I’m sorry if I was...being too pushy or anything like that. I just want you to know that you’re my family, no matter what.”

“do you know what it means?” he asked, striding over to the detective’s side. he had spotted her through a crowd of onlookers and made the decision to talk to her immediately. it was clear that she was important; she way she carried herself was enough to give it away, but the orders she was barking at uniformed officers made it even more abundantly clear. he realized that his question was somewhat vague; ‘it’ could’ve been anything. the murders, the placement of the card, the catastrophe overall. no one at a scene like this could say ‘it’ and expect to be understood, so he quickly added, “the card, i mean. the ten of swords. do you know what it means when it comes up in a reading?”
he had enough experience with tarot cards to know what the ten of swords meant, and that meant he knew what this was — some kind of fucked up warning, probably from something entirely beyond their comprehension. and if a detective was on the scene, he figured he should let her know.
As hard as she had tried, Cora couldn’t avoid the questions. But what startled her was how the man came up to her her so abruptly, getting his question right out of the gate. “I’m afraid I don’t know,” she said as she came to a stop, giving him a quick once over. God he was tall, and seemed harmless enough. And if he had information that she needed, she couldn’t very well pass it up.
“What does it mean?” she asked as she got out her pen and notepad. Some police work was still done the old-fashioned way. “When it comes up in a reading?”

“ it’s been awhile since i’ve seen so many hunters get out of a room . ” usually they run towards the chaos - but maybe she’s been away for a bit too long . or maybe she was just projecting her own chaotic tendencies on the group as a whole . “ my siblings ? alive , as expected . i’m sure moira is chewing out some poor person . ” a shrug , slender hands play with the end of her ( awfully dry ) hair strands . “ me ? pissed that my dress smells like a smoker’s wonderland . ” cue a sniff , she’s obviously not pleased with the outcome - but , it’s not haunting her .
“Well flames tend to make people do that.” Hunters had been known to run into the face of danger, but usually not so much when an entire building was collapsing around them. Cora had never really been able to place Amelia. She was odd that was for sure, but her gut told her that there was a whole lot going on beneath the surface. The only reason that she didn’t look into it more was out of respect for her family.

bittersculs:
Juliet certainly hadn’t slept, she’d taken Sophia home and then had stayed up all night, bathed in the light of her laptop, hoodie up, chewing on the laces, accompanied by little more than steady clacking of her keys. She was a leader now, a shepherd in her own right, she was going to need answers for the others in her little slice of jurisdiction. What in the world could have done this?
She called in sick to work the next day. She despised lying, in fact, she carried her guilt twisted-stomach around with her all day. It even gave her a small ache. Still, Juliet persevered. The scene of the crime was sectioned off, as to be expected, just as it was expected for her feet to carry her there. This was her first task, in many ways, as new leader. She’d managed to grab one of the cards
Juliet recognized the woman at the scene of the crime, because she’d done her homework and scourged just about anything she could from the net and the dark web about the existing founding family leaders.
“Ms. Heartfield? Cora?” Cora was homicide wasn’t she? Not arson. Juliet wasn’t really the kind to get these sorts of facts wrong so she chalked it up to short staff on the NYPD.
“Ms. Shepherd. You knew my mother? I mean, I think you knew my mother, she was the, um, leader before me? I’m taking over for her. I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I’m rather new. I’m Juliet. As in ‘Thus with a kiss I die.’ “
All this said rather fast. She stuck out her hand. For a shake.
“I don’t suppose you’ve had much luck figuring this one out have you?”
Someone calling her by her name made her pause as she walked to her cruiser, and looking at the woman Cora thought that maybe she looked vaguely familiar but couldn’t place her. She didn’t look like a reporter, who Cora absolutely did not want to deal with at the moment. They were surrounding the scene like vultures. These girls eyes didn’t have that insatiable desire to poke and pry. “Yes that’s me. Can I help you?”
“Oh of course,” Cora said as she shook her hand after the great rush of words had stopped. Now she knew from where she seemed familiar. She hadn’t known Juliet’s mother well, but her own grandfather and father had made sure that she knew all the leaders and their heirs growing up. She had never met Juliet, another young woman thrown into a position of leadership with a legacy on her shoulders, but she looked like her mother.
“Well, it has only been a day. Cases take time to put together.”

Thea gave her cousin a sideways glance, shoulders straightening at the sight of her. She had done her best to steer clear of her during the gala, not wanting to make a scene, but she knew it was only a matter of time before she saw Cora again. “ What’s up ? “ she asked casually as she approached the woman, hands in her pockets. The werewolf wasn’t sure what to make of the eldest Heartfield; part of her wanted to be part of the family again ( and it seemed they’d welcome her in with open arms ), but she knew better. They were hunters, trained to kill her own kind.
“I just...wanted to make sure that you’re okay after the fire,” Cora said to her. She was having a hard time figuring out what to do with Thea and how to treat her; she was family but at the same time she wasn’t, she was a complete stranger. The young woman standing in front of her wasn’t the girl that she had sparred with and taught how to shoot a bow.

Cassius was waiting at her car when she arrived. “ Did you find anything ? “ was the first and only thing he said, uncharacteristically straight to the point. Typically he at least tried to exchange in sort sort of pleasantries.
Cora’s mouth set into a firm grimace when she saw the Lallement leader standing there waiting for her. “Cases take time Cassius,” she reminded him. “We’re bagging and tagging everything that we can. Maybe whoever did this got sloppy with one of the cards and there’s a fingerprint or DNA...” Cora knew it was unlikely but she had to have some hope. “If we find something I’ll let the council know.”

“ did everyone you care about get out safe ? ” baby blues are wide , blinks at the other innocently as she brings her hot chocolate spiked with a potion , to her lips . amelia’s actually surprised by the turn of events , the smell of SOOT lingering in her hair , and smoke on her skin . “ i don’t think there’s enough japanese cherry blossom perfume in the world to cover up this stench . ” crinkles her nose with a sigh . “ it’s really hard running in heels . ” will shiver , though she’s not sure if it’s because of the chilly weather or the prospect of what could have caused this .
Cora nodded, letting out a long sigh as she did. “Yeah, Petra and Jack got out, so did Jasper and his family.” It was a mercy in this this hectic time that she didn’t have to mourn anyone, unlike the family of those poor people who had been the fire’s only casualties. “How are Moira and Killarney? How are you?” They may have been hunters, raised to be strong and brave, but they still be shaken up, especially when surrounded by flames and the possibility of death.

Squatting down in the charcoal and the ash, Cora inspected one the leftover tarot cards with a gloved hand. The ten of swords. She didn’t know its symbolism, she would have to consult with someone who did, but it obviously wasn’t good. Whomever was behind these attacks certainly had a flair for the dramatic. “Bag it,” she said to a uniformed officer, handing over the card. They would bag and tag all of them if it meant that maybe they could get a shred of evidence off of them. She was a homicide detective, not arson, but with two bodies found and her connection to the building and the founding families, Cora had been able to get onto the case. Her hope was that she would be able to bring something to the council meeting that would help them find whoever did this.
Cora stood up, the slight burn on her arm aching as she did, and crossed over the yellow tape that marked off the crime scene, avoiding questions from reporters and curious onlookers as she did.

“ Y’know, I was really thinking that party was going to be a bust, “ Thea was telling someone, once she heard they had also been at the same event. “ But the fire and earthquake and shit really LIVENED it up, don’t you think ? Though I did lose one of my heels during the night. Probably for the best though, I never learned how to walk in ‘em. “ Her body tenses a moment when she feels eyes on her, turning around to shoot a stranger eyes like DAGGERS. “ Excuse me, you got something to add ? “
“Thea,” Cora called out to her cousin as she approached the group of spectators that were hanging around the scene of the fire on the other side of the yellow tape. She had seen her at the gala, but had kept her distance; Thea didn’t appear too keen on hanging with their family and Cora knew that she could be...intense about their family sometimes. It came with the job. But she was relieved to see that she had gotten out okay. It would have been devastating to lose her again. “Do you mind if we talk?”
