          The ONE time he doesn’t get out early from cleaning up the dressing rooms is obviously going to be today of all days ( damn Cohen ). Frazzled, one might say, is the boy’s state of mind as he rushes to his parent’s suite in the Artemis district to change and gather up what material Silas might need. There’s just so much that the kid could do, song, dance, simply writing music was a big deal to him – it’s a shame there was no long-term finesse in crowning the stage with just magic tricks alone. Pulling a RABBIT out of a hat wasn’t going to keep a crowd interested for long, but that doesn’t stop Peter from dragging a small separate briefcase in junction to the other filled with stacks of written music.

          Its probably been about two weeks, give or take, since Silas showed interest in the lad. ( About time too! ) Maybe if he impressed the producer enough with some of his premade work, any innovation and improv would be taken into fluid consideration. No questions asked. 

          A bare minimum of ten minutes, ten full minutes of sprinting through the streets and skidding down half churned alleyways to cut through the usual evening bustle landed him where he needed to be. The doors to Cobb’s store eventually open with a hurried   ( and loud ) chime of the bell knocking against the doorframe. In a frantic puff of air, Peter stops at the counter with a winded smile, “I’m here! S-Sorry about the wait, I got held up at work. . .” Excuses weren’t really his thing, but not explaining himself at all just seemed downright RUDE.

If there was one thing about Silas which almost elevated him to the position of model Rapture citizen, it was that altruism never played a part in anything he did. It might appear otherwise, for example, whenever he did a favour for someone, but there was always an angle and that angle was firmly rooted in selfishness. Eventually, Peter would learn this for himself, but at the moment, Silas wanted to keep the kid in blissful ignorance. So he played up the kindness, the encouragement and the compliments. Promised the boy the world on a plate and all Peter had to do was reach out and take it. What could be simpler? He had a modicum of talent - Silas presumed - and technology could work wonders in improving raw sound. The studio was all ready. An instrumental backing track waited to have some vocals added. There was a time, in another life, when Silas would have taken very genuine pleasure in starting a musician off on his road to stardom. Not that Peter would have had much of a shot at fame and fortune on the surface. Mediocrity didn’t swing it up there. The talent had to be exceptional if you didn’t want to end up tossed aside along with all the other no-hopers. In Rapture, however, there was less competition and that had caused people to lower expectations. Sure, Ryan had invited the cream of the crop to Rapture, in the hope of populating the city with the most talent, beautiful, elite people. But even the brightest star faded. The amazing became the ordinary. The ordinary became mundane. Apathy and ennui have the people of Rapture hankering for something more and Silas was the man with an answer. The answer was a bright-eyed young man of indeterminate ability and an attractive face. Peter would inject some life into the music scene and the benefits for Silas? Money, recognition, the opportunity to do something he genuinely loved. And, of course, the chance to knock old man Cohen off his throne. A throne which would suit Silas very well indeed.

Everything was ready but for one vital component: Peter. Being late on his first day of recording didn’t reflect well on the kid, but Silas was in good spirits as he sat on the counter of his record store, sipping coffee. While he didn’t have all the time in the world to wait, he was content to give Peter a few more minutes. After that, the producer wouldn’t be quite so charitable.
