Oh, not my own sacrifices, darling. I mean you. Evolution needs a push now and then.

Viper graced the blonde with a pleased smile, reaching up to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. “Good, then we are on the same page. After all, the best way to assess one’s weaknesses is to study them closely, yes? We must be careful how we go about it, however. One wrong move, and we’ll have the full weight of their oh-so-righteous anger falling on our heads.”
The smile from Viper was a welcome reward, but the affectionate action was a pleasant surprise. Irmingard replied with a coy smile and nodded. “Indeed. So to ensure our own security and their demise, it would be best to take the most vulnerable. Predators seek out the wanderers who stray from the herd. I must confess, I’ve watched little of their movements, but surely you would know who would be easiest to take first?”

She nodded politely, tone returning to normal as she returned to scanning the light crowd. “Not at all. Your enthusiasm is refreshing. As for the plan, that was why I sought you out. I have been contacted by a being who wishes to retain our services. That is to say, he wants solders. Powerful ones. Specifically, ones to rival those rather pesky Avengers.” She turned back to Irmingard. “We need to assess them.”
Irmingard listened raptly. “Simply assess?” She wanted to ask Madame Hydra if they could apprehend one or two for the dark scientist to experiment on, but she did not want to anger her idol. Still, messing with DNA was her forte and passion, if she could not get her hands on at least one of them, she’d be quite disappointed. “If we could capture even one to extract DNA from, perhaps we can duplicate and make multiple soldiers of equal power.”

She watched Irmingard’s expression go distant. “Perhaps so.” Viper studied her subordinate’s face for a few moments, then quirked an eyebrow, voice quietly reproachful. “However, I believe it would be prudent to deal with the project at hand before allowing yourself to be overcome with such… distractions.”
Irmingard snapped back into focus at the tone. She chided herself for losing her composure in front of Madame Hydra. “My apologies. I merely thought-” She stopped herself; no, no excuses. “But that doesn’t matter. What project are you referring to?”

Viper returned her gaze to Irmingard, expression unreadable. “Indeed. The process is much more efficient the spider’s way. Though there is admittedly something pleasurable about the thrill of the cat’s chase.”
“Then perhaps we should meld the spider with the cat,” Irmingard commented, her mind already thinking through how to make something like that to use in soldiers. “You do seem the type who enjoys pouncing on her prey.” She offered absentmindedly as she was now completely engrossed in the start of an experiment.

Viper crossed her legs delicately, giving a silvery laugh as she scanned the surroundings. “Ah, but make no mistake: the spider does considerable work. She must carefully spin her web, strong yet subtle, so that the fly does not know it is lost until far too late.”
Irmingard smiled politely at the correction, though she fumed internally. Not at the correction itself, but her own stupidity. She wanted to impress her idol, not show her own incompetence. “To be sure, the spider plans and toils more to start, but then they get to wait for their prey to come to them. I much prefer that method.”

She laughed, moving around the bench to sit. “No, I suppose that’s more my specialty. Still, it doesn’t do to play cat and mouse. I much prefer the spider and the fly.”
“That’s because the cat has to do all the work, while the spider simply bides its time. And from what my research has told me about you, you seem far more the latter.” Irmingard chuckled softly, inwardly excited for the conversation with her long-time idol.

Viper leaned forward, gracefully folding her arms in front of her. “Oh, I’m certain you’re quite capable of frightening them. The key, darling, lies in drawing them in.”
“Oh that’s the beauty of it.” Irmingard smirked, folding her newspaper onto her lap. “I don’t have to draw them in. I just get to strap them to tables and observe how they tick.”

“Look at all the interesting specimens.” Irmingard commented as she sat on the park bench. “Oh, sorry, people. I wonder how fast I can make them twitch.”
