My understanding of Katara has always been - she is someone who knows what she wants and always goes after it no matter what. We actually see this from the very first scene of the show with Sokka. Then she fights with her own family to go after Aang. And again when she wants to free the Earthbender prisoners. Over and over again, people tell her she can't do something and Katara just scoffs and does the thing anyway. And this characterisation is consistent for her throughout the whole show.

The one and only place where this falls apart is when it comes to responding to Aang's romantic advances. Katara completely avoids talking about the unexpected kiss after the invasion. She is only confused about her wants when Aang asks her if she wants to date him or not. She doesn’t even talk to her other friends about it... like at all!

I don't know what that says about the people who wrote that part of the show. But as someone who had to reject a friend's romantic advances in real life, I doubt she was as confused as she said out loud. I mean, she went after Jet immediately and even showed interest in Haru (albeit to a lesser degree). But she was always hesitant regarding Aang until the very last minute of the show where they just start kissing without resolving any of their issues. We don't even get one scene where Katara decides to get over her confusion about Aang!

Idk just thinking about this while prepping for Zutara week.

Zuko and Katara

The defeated and bloodied king was chained to kneel in front of his enemy and he says weakly: "Is my wife still alive?" His enemy nodded. "You fools," he said smirking, and the king starts laughing as the sounds of explosions getting closer shake the room.

Zuko in post-canon stories is always so lonely waiting for his friends to come visit, but that's all over once he gets Druk and can just go visit them whenever he feels like it.

Kanna, in the South Pole: Katara, that overgrown fire-spitting komodo-rhino is here again, and he's brought his dragon, too.

“Her?” Lord Chen repeated.

“Master Katara is receiving petitions alone today,” replied the steward.

Lord Chen smirked. “Really? Well that will make this almost too easy.” Smoothing his hands down the front of his robe, Lord Chen stood and entered the throne room.

“Isn’t Lord Chen the one who used emergency aid funds to build himself a beach house instead of repairing homes damaged by floods?” asked an attendant.

The steward nodded, the slight twitch of his lips hinting that he hid a smile behind his professional facade. “Her majesty is going to eat him alive.”

A lot of anti-Zutarians use the argument that it’s demeaning to have Katara rule over the nation of the people who killed her mother/ attacked her people. And like… nah. Can we talk about what a power move? What up, your Fire Lord almost wiped out my tribe, but instead my friends and I took him down, put a new Fire Lord on the throne whose heart I captured, and now I’m your queen and together we’re going to push a lot of social justice and reform while being super in love and happy bow down to Her Royal Majesty, Master Katara of the Southern Water Tribe, Queen Consort of the Fire Nation.

No matter how one thing was sure- they were no longer strangers, a thorn in each other's paths. Not really friends but not enemies either. Somehow, somewhere along the way, in their dreams and only in their dreams, Katara and Zuko found each other.

In other words - Katara and Zuko start meeting each other in their dreams and shenanigans ensue.

One of the things I love about the Ember Island Players is that by trying to make fun of the possibility of romance between Zuko and Katara in the play-within-a-play, the show actually introduces Zutara as text into the world of the show, particularly in Fire Nation pop culture.

Like, there's this widely-advertised production that shows the Fire Prince and the Southern waterbending master falling in love. Then, probably the next thing the gen pop hears about their future Fire Lord is that he's jumped in front of his sister's lightning to save this same girl's life, doing absolutely nothing to beat those allegations.

There's just no way the gossip mill isn't churning. It's too juicy.

This is probably around when they step down from the throne, passing it on to their daughter Kya. It happens slightly earlier in the Pandaverse timeline than in the LoK timeline, because they decide to move south so Katara can take over as Korra’s waterbending master fulltime.
