He was the first person in your life whose death you witnessed. He died in his own home, surrounded by the people he loved, and he had been ready to go, ready to give in to the cancer raging inside his aged body. You remember watching as your parents stood at his bedside, holding his frail hand gingerly, listening to each breath rattle inside his weakening lungs. You also remember leaving the room, the emotions flooding the room being far too much for your eight-year-old self to bear. You came back after a few minutes to say goodbye, but you were met with the sight of your grandmother sobbing over her husband’s body, and tears streaming down your mother’s face. You hadn’t gotten to say goodbye, and you hadn’t been there for the last few seconds of your grandfather’s life. You remember running into the closest room and collapsing and screaming and crying, until your dad walked in. And that was when it stopped.
