thinking about what "something eternal" means in the series and maybe the answer is related to liberation.
I say this because prince dios showed anthy's suffering to utena as something eternal. we can interpret this as eternal suffering to oppressed people because anthy is racialized and mistreated because of this and, of course, "in the end, all girls are like the rose". utena see this and recognizes her pain and, instead of accepting it as something unchangeable, she decides to save anthy.
utena's approach at the beginning of the series is also wrong. she tries to "save" anthy as a prince, treating her like everyone else does: as someone without autonomy and without reaching to her in equal foot and being considerate towards her actual needs. in other words, anthy wanted understanding of her pain and recognition to her humanity instead of others treating her as a tool to feel good with one's chivalry. utena was selfish because she decided to live her prince fantasies through anthy.
at the end, she realizes that this is unfair and how it actually damages anthy. she reaches her in equal foot and both of them achieve liberation. so, all this time, the way to get "something eternal" was real connection with others. liberation through love and real understanding between oppressed people. recognizing each others pain and needs, and acting accordingly. wanting to help each other to be more autonomous because we are not free until we are all free. we shouldn't try to "save" others because we end up stripping them of deciding how their own well being looks like or how to works towards it. collective liberation means we all are interdependent to one another to be truly free. so what we should actually do is talk to other people as equals. don't show them "the path", you have nothing to teach. construct the path collectively and learn from each other.
utena's liberation was tied to anthy's. our liberation is bound to one another's. that's the key to meaning, to finally reach "something eternal".

Ok so I've just about finished the revolutionary girl manga (thanks mangago) and I think I get the symbolism because the manga actually condenses everything. Gonna rewatch the anime after, then the movie then the post-event manga.
So my take on this is that Dios was a people pleaser, and when he realised everyone kept asking for things and was never satisfied he decided to kill that part of himself and become Worlds End. But before that he gave the ideal version of himself to Utena. He was a people pleaser turned to a selfish monster, not a noble saint and ideal prince he was painted out to be, however he gave Utena the motivation to be what he should've been. As a result of him leaving to go and live his awful selfish desires he left poor Anthy with his people pleasing tendancies, or the "power of dios". That's how I'm reading into it for now.
And also, vv evil man-coded, make a girl become a strong independant woman just to own her when you think she's fully realised her strong potential. Dios gave her the strength to be her own person, then Akio grew to want to own that type of strength because he had become a power seeking hungry man. I don't think that was Dios's original intention when helping Utena, I think this was a spur of the moment last good deed before he rejects his humanity, this was also the kindest and purest and most princely act, as beforehand it really was just people pleasing which would create alot of mental anguish.
So of course Anthy would grieve the man he used to be, wanting "save him" aka hope he goes back to how he used to be, but he's been incredibly corrupted now, and so Anthy accidently trapped herself by taking his burdens, and he was happy to let her suffer with it so she never could escape. But the prince he comes to create (Utena) saves Anthy, lets her be her own individual person. She couldn't change(revolutionise) the world and its injustices and gender imbalances but she was atleast able to let Anthy realise she is allowed to have her own free will, and doesn't need to people please for her brother anymore.
That's my take atleast, the magic is just symbolism for all of these points! (But the magic sounds cooler, but it does get confusing wondering what's real and what's not). I'll wap out my takes when I lock in and rewatch the anime!

Step 1-draw the form of your character first - a sphere, or a cranium or whatever the form looks like. Step 2- Draw center lines through the form both vertically and horizontally- wrap those lines around the form in the right place. Don’t draw straight lines. right through the center. Not to the side - be logical! DRAW SLOW AND CAREFULLY TO GET IT TO LOOK RIGHT.”

Asumiko Nakamura interview from Dôkyuusei/Sotsugyôsei Fanbook (Part 5)
(This is from the pages where she shows her studio).
Born in Kanagawa, she made her debut in the year 2000 but her place of both work and living hasn’t changed since then. We’ll investigate this place full of significance.
There’s a peculiar combination between antique furniture and miscellaneous chairs and desks at the place of work of Asumiko Nakamura. Various sizes of frames, ceramic goods, flower vases, and diverse accessories mix here and there. There are also characters all over the place. A duck, a shark, an orca, a whale, an egg, a gremlin, a zaku (the mobile suit from Gundam), ET and a lot more. There’s a strong sense of personality everywhere you look. Books of documentation and tools of work coexist together with open spaces and nature. Like the manuscripts by Nakamura, this selection includes both her exquisite humor and her artistic sense.
There’s a little egg-gentleman with glasses and a moustache decorating a wall that she made when she attended her arts high school. She was an egg freak in those years.
“I like painters like Magritte or Dalí, so it could be because of their influence. I’ve been asked a lot of times if I like Breadsley, but who I really love is Magritte. He wasn’t a pure artist. He worked in advertising too but he had the flexibility that allowed him to combine his work with the spirit of a true artisan. And I like that. I like product design and I had a really good time making the colour how-to for this book and thinking about the illustrations for the covers of the tankôbon books".
In the interior of her workplace you can feel the air of exoticism that also imbues her opus. Other works by her apart from Dôkyuusei come to mind: gymnasiums and scenarios of New York and the America of the fifties from J no Subete, the Parisian circus in the seventies from Copernicus no Kokyuu…, and all of that without mentioning her stories for Gothic and Lolita Bible.
For Nakamura there are a lot of different aesthetic routes to explore, so when she started to publish a story that had a realistic contemporary setting no few readers were surprised.
“But she just does all-for-the-aesthetic kind of things. I got reactions like that, of course. But deep inside of me, I wanted to draw things of evocative thin line and BL too. Basically I’m the type who likes to try drawing everything, really. It’s just that until then I had been experimenting, so I felt like trying to make a simpler story. I considered all of the possibilities and even took jobs offered to me via the website. In those days I still had the time to do it.”
Like her own home, Nakamura hasn’t changed much since those days. Without assistants, she completes her manuscripts with her own effort. There are a lot of mangaka who devote a great amount of time to storyboarding, but she usually focus on writing the plot.
“Then, while visualizing a concrete scene, I think about the conversations and the division of panels. It takes me like 2 days to draw the storyboard. For example, in the case of a black and white story of 32 pages, I draw the drafts in 3 days, inking takes 3 days, and completing everything, 3 days more. With margin, 10 days is my standard schedule for a job.“
Incidentally, if we look closely to the walls we find written in a piece of paper "Don’t overestimate your ability even just one day - the morning previous to the deadline”. Naturally, it’s a reminder for herself. For us is like a sight of her continuously repeating fight against the deadline.

Asumiko Nakamura interview from Dôkyuusei/Sotsugyôsei Fanbook (Part 4)
Bara Iro no Hoho no Koro was the story of the young years of Paul and Morgan, who are characters from J no Subete. “ Then I felt like drawing a story about two people as different as Paul and Morgan again. But this time I wanted them to end together. Precisely in that moment I was requested by OPERA to draw in their special number devoted to megane. And that’s how Dôkyuusei was born. Now that I think about it, I notice that Morgan and Sajô look alike.”
While being a quite orthodox BL, Dôkyuusei stands outs for not having a very distinct division between the role of seme and uke. “I was aware of that when I created these characters. I arranged everything for them to match as equals. I’m careful with not letting Sajô’s girly side come out. And Kusakabe, although he fits the role of the prince, he sometimes is quite motherly as well. In terms of outward appearance, all was because a megane special, so Sajô is my beloved type of megane that stresses easily and gets angry because of that. Regarding Kusakabe, I wated him to look showy, so made him with fair curled hair. And for Hara-sensei, the editorial asked me to make him like Arther from J no subete, so that was what I did.”
Hara-sensei was originally a female professor by whom all school boys felt attracted. “The editor advised me to make him a man because it felt more appropriate since I was writing BL”. The story progressed fast and we decided to end it with the graduation. The publication of Dôkyuusei to Sotsugyôsei lasted almost three years, but the base of the story kept being the same that we thought about in the beginning. Of course sometimes a draft that was turned down. For example, for the second chapter of Dôkyuusei I submitted one which had a lot of more tension on it, and it was all rejected. There were more things that turned out different than planned. Before the beginning of the serialization, I had the idea of making it with much more erotic tone and that was what I told to the editor, but when I began drawing I changed my mind. Also, the number of episodes of Sotsugyôsei increased and ended up being too many for just one volume so we split it in two. But yes, the story was essentially the same at the beginning that what ended coming out.”
In OPERA, the magazine in where it was serialized, each volume is monothematic. It seems difficult to make the backbone of a story that was already written to adjust to each theme. “It was fun to adapt it within the restrictions imposed. Making it follow the rules in each case while keeping expressing yourself inside the bonds felt like a challenge.“
Asumiko Nakamura as flexible as she is, an author eager to explore new paths, has expanded her work into diverse genres.
“My next work, Sora to Hara, comes to fulfill the wishes of the readers, who wanted me to make Hara-sensei happy. I felt like that too. By all means I wanted to do it. The things were already in my head, I was thinking about it, and the ideas seemed good enought to me”.
Gathering strength, working hard every day, she is tossed by the waves but does not sink.
““Fluctuat nec mergitur” With this motto I want to keep drawing manga always”.
As if she was a hero swimming in the wide sea of manga, after the graduation of Dôkyuusei, Nakamura ‘s adventure won’t end at all and she promises to keep struggling.

Nakamura tell us that she draws manga in order to give the form of a story to her inner feelings. But she has externalized her emotions in diverse ways along her life. There’s also one more thing apart from manga in which she has been an enthusiast: theatre.
“While in high school and university, I did drama. But I didn't give my all to it. Even now I like theatre, but I've came to understand that manga is my main vehicle of expression.”
Nakamura began to send submissions to CUTiE Comic and Manga F (now Manga Erotics F), and finally in the year 2000 she got a honorable mention in the third edition of the Erotics manga prize with Coffee satô iri koi suru madobe (コーヒー砂糖入り 恋する窓辺).After that, she began to serialize J no subete in the same magazine and immediately she started to draw attention. "I submitted it to F because I got the impression that it was a avant-garde publication and I felt my works matched with the spirit of the magazine. It also seemed like they gave you a wide range of freedom. Besides, it just released their first issue so I thought there still could be a vacant place for me in there (laughs).“
"After winning that prize, publishing several short stories and finishing Copernicus no kokyuu, when people from the magazine asked me “what do you want to do next?” I suddenly felt like writing about friendship. I have a friend who is a woman born man, and even if he had trouble or suffered, he wished to have a happy everyday living. I wanted to talk about that, because by then you still couldn’t see many stories about transgender people. “
With this the publication of J no subete began. While doing that, encouraged by her editor, she kept sending manuscripts to Flowers and Melody. But as she was drawing erotic works and giving form to her unique style she took her next step without knowing. When J no subete finished, the spin off Barairo no hoo no koro came to light. It was then when she was requested to draw a BL. Dôkyuusei was about to being conceived.

Regarding shôjo manga, although she had been hooked to Otousan wa shinpaisô, it wasn’t until junior high that she felt like drawing romance.
“That was the reason that I got me into shôjo manga. A friend lent me Dragon Fist by Shuu Katayama and because of it I subscribed to Wings. It was by those years when I discovered BL manga too. I loved the books by Sumako Kari. They were so amusing and cute that I read them in excitement.
I went to an Arts School after junior high, so the number of manga enthusiasts around me increased. I got into Yumi Tada and Michio Hisauchi. At the same time I was drawn into Garo style manga, I loved Sakumi Yoshino and brought every issue of Buuke (Bouquet).
By then I realized that some magazines accepted submissions. I still didn’t know how things worked in the manga world, so I recall thinking "Oh, so I can become mangaka right away”
From her introduction to the world of manga at an early age to the time she graduated from high school, she had gone through comic adaptations of games, shônen manga, shôjo manga, BL and alternative manga, a great variety of genres. And these are the foundations upon which her actual style developed.
“Speaking of visual aspects, there still are traces of those clean lines of Moriken in my art. Also Yumi Tada’s solid atmospheres. Sakumi Yoshino left her influence in my way of painting thick eyelashes. Those are what I feel are in the base of my drawing style”.

Asumiko Nakamura interview from Dôkyuusei/Sotsugyôsei Fanbook (Part 1)
Asumiko Nakamura’s art could be defined somewhere between her beautiful strokes and her distinctive deformed caricatures. With such a peculiar drawing style, which is, however, firmly rotted in the conventions of manga, she had managed to create a great diversity of stories. From a refreshing and successful BL romance like Dôkyuusei and Sotsugyôsei, to aesthetic erotic works, shôjo manga, seinen manga, or psych-suspense, the range and variety of her works is, in fact, hugely wide.
Where does this all come from? When we ask her about her first influences, she surprises us with some unexpected answers.
“I really like drawings with anime like clean lines. When I was a child my favourite manga was The Wing of Madoola (マドゥーラの翼) by Moriken. It was a comic adaptation of a videogame. Even now, when I look at it I still think it has a very good art. It’s cute and pretty and looks of high quality even if it doesn’t use a lot of screentones.
I grew up with videogames and I especially liked Dragon Quest II. I was a kid that wished to someday go on adventure slaying dragons and every time I found a gemlike stone I thought what legend could it hide.”
On her elementary school years, influenced by her older brother, she used to read shônen manga like Ranma ½ or 3x3 Eyes. She started to draw them by herself by those times too.
“Although I already thought I wanted to be a mangaka when I was in kindergarten, it was on the first year of school when I drew my first manga. It had ten pages. I made some photocopies, arranged them as if they were a book and I deliver them to anyone in class who showed interest. I also drew serialized manga in the diaries I exchanged with friends. I managed to keep serializing six stories at the same time, all of them were sword and sorcery romantic comedies. I think that came out heavily influenced by the things I liked the most by then, Dragon Quest and Shônen Sunday magazine. I ended mixing everything together (laughs).”

I liked this story much more than I expected. Sexually charged but with its touch of cuteness and tenderness. This was an important moment in their strange and uncertain relationship and their faces almost killed me! ♥
