Disability Pride month let's not forget about the people in our community with intellectual disabilities!

I just found out about the Stay Up Late campaign to advocate for people with intellectual disabilities to have the right to go out in the evening and not have to be in bed by 8pm

I learned about it from this video:

Besides being a serial rapist, Bill Cosby was the undisputed king of respectability politics, and I fully endorse the notion that he was more harmful than helpful, for Black America. Cosby did A LOT of damage and I hate how much he set the tone for an entire generation of Black people. Whenever one of my elders starts with some Cosby-esque, “They need to pull up their pants if they want to be respected,” I always ask them what was MLKjr wearing when he was murdered? How was John Lewis dressed when the police cracked his skull?? If systems of structural racism cared about our level of education or what we wore, then things like systemic housing discrimination wouldn’t exist. Racists do not care about how we nicely dress or how well we speak—they simply hate Black people.

Black Widow’s director Cate Shortland on ‘involuntary hysterectomy’ clap-back

“So Eric, who is our writer, had written a joke about women being in bad moods because they have their period, Shortland recalls. And I remember Florence and Scarlett and I reading it and just being like, ‘Oh, my God, this is ridiculous.’

The director says she almost cut the joke entirely, but after discussing with her actors, ultimately decided to “answer it.” She didn’t clarify if that meant improvising on the day of or going back for traditional rewrites, but the outcome was the final digression on involuntary hysterectomies.

I love it, Shortland says. Because it’s like, if you’re gonna make that joke, I’m gonna unleash Florence Pugh on you. She’s gonna Yelena you. It’s one of my favorite moments in the film.”

Weaponized incompetence my ass just weaponize it back. Once my dad tries to pull the “but I don’t know how to clean the counters as well as you” on my mom and she said “ok honey I’ll show you” and she made him stand in the kitchen and watch her clean the counters. Then she pulled out a bottle of chocolate syrup and proceeded to spray the entire kitchen in chocolate, hand him the sponge and said “okay now it’s your turn”

I'm actually super glad we're having a conversation about this. The masculinization of black and brown women, because for years I felt like I endured this unique form of trauma until I realized other people went through the same thing too. And if there's one thing that I'd like to add to the conversation, there seems to be this misconception that this is something that starts at puberty. Like boys tell you you look like a man to hurt your feeling when that's so far from the case.

The first time I was purposefully misgendered was in kindergarten. I was constantly referred to by the masculine variant of my name, I was chased out of the women's restroom, and I had grown adults questioning what my biological sex was before I even knew what the difference was. And those behaviors persisted into adulthood because now if I present as anything less than 100% feminine, people will either compare me to men or animals.

And for myself and for many other brown and black women this is a life long act deliberately intended to humiliate, shame, and other us for the features we were naturally born with and I'm glad we're having a discussion on how harmful it actually is.]
