i asked my mom for a terra nova diary for my bday and she told me she went to the bookstore and was telling the clerk “yeah my son has a really niche interest in antarctic exploration in the early 1900s” and the clerk was like “yeah that is really niche”. meanwhile it’s the only thing me and my mutuals are talking about. i forgot that the general public doesn’t even know about shackleton let alone all these other dudes

how exactly is frankenstein related to polar exploration? first, mary shelley wrote her masterpiece between 1816 and 1817, smack dab in the period where interest in the polar regions was resurging in british society. the following year in 1818, a series of expeditions seeking the northwest passage were launched by the british admiralty, first enlisting john ross to lead it, followed by edward parry and john franklin. former terror camp keynote speaker francis spufford elegantly wrote more on the subject in chapter 4 of his book "i may be some time:"
