Barn Burning
This is a story of a young boy named Sarty and his father, Abner who was basically an Arsonist. Abner had burnt his house down and was facing charges for his crime and the feds were trying to make his son testify against him but he couldn’t. His father, however, punishes him for “almost” testifying against him.
Over the course of the story, the writer tells us of how Abner lived his life as a jerk and how his son was always being conflicted about his father and his lifestyle. The end of the story tells of how Abner burnt down the barn of a man he was supposed to be working for and he ended up being killed although his son was partly responsible. Sarty ends up living the town at after the death of his father to somewhere else to start a new life.

Recitatif
This is a story about two females and their relationship throughout the years as they grew up. They supposedly were of different races although the details remain vague all through the course of the story.
Roberta and Twyla were friends who met at a shelter for orphans when they were at a young age and they were able to bond quite quickly although, they didn’t like each other at first. The fact that they were the only none orphans in the shelter home and no one seemed to like them helped them find a common reason to bond with each other. Over the course of the story, it is shown that their relationship was sort of a roller coaster. They seemed to like each other and dislike each other and like each other again and it kept on going like that through the course of the story.

Flying Home by  RALPH WALDO ELLISON
This story is about a young African American man named Todd, a student in the Flight Training School of Macon County, Alabama. The story basically talks about how he crash-landed a tailspinning plane and met an older African-American man named Jefferson along with his son.
The story tells of how Todd always wanted to fly an airplane ever since he was young and how doing so comes with a lot of challenges especially because of his race.
This story portrays Todd’s dream as being a limited version of what his overall goal should be.

Désirée’s Baby
Today, we talked about the story of Désirée’s Baby from the book The Concise Heath Anthology of American Literature. This story was about a white lady named Désirée and a man of mixed color named Armand whose father was of a white descent and his mother was of the black descent making him part black and part white. Désirée and Armand were husband and wife for a brief period. Their marriage was brief because they had a child together and things seemed to be going fine for them but something happened that would break their marriage.
Désirée and Armand’s child wasn’t white. After a few months of their child being born, almost everyone in their household seemed to notice that the child wasn’t a pure white child. Désirée however, seemed to be the last to notice this change. When the husband discovered the child’s color, he assumed immediately that Désirée was black and for this began to hate his wife as well as their child and even sent them away from his household. It is later revealed at the end of the story when Désirée found an old letter that was sent from Armand’s mom to his father that the reason the child had a dark complexion was because the father (Armand) was part black. The passage states: “But above all,” she wrote, “night and day, I thank the good GOD for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery (424).”

Chickamauga
On the 22nd of February 2018, we talked about this story in class.
It is a story about a young child who was mute and couldn’t talk as well.
This event took place during the American civil war. The child wandered into the woods, fell asleep and woke up only to find dead and injured soldiers all over the place and thought them to animals of different sorts. There had been a war right there where he was asleep but wasn’t woken by the noise because he was a mute so he couldn’t hear the sounds of chaos all around him. He lost his mother in this war, his house was burned to the ground, he was being looked for by the villagers of his community where he came from... The story was a pretty sad story for a young child who couldn’t hear or speak to anyone.

THE MONSTERS
We talked about this story today in class, and basically, it was a story about a young man named Henry Johnson who was black and he lived in a town called Whilmore. He was basically living a life where he was being despised by his fellow townspeople. Ones there was a fire and he rescued someone but in doing so, he didn’t make it out of the fire on time and people thought he was dead. They all started to hail him a hero and many said great things about him and called him such great nice names. But it turned out that he didn’t die in the fire and he made it out alive, but he suffered great scars from the fire that made his looks physically deformed. When the people saw him and the way he looks many started to wish him dead because they were so afraid of his looks and even started to call him a monster. I personally think it’s so sad that he was treated like a hero when everyone thought he was dead and that he died to save someone else’s life but turned around and started treating him like a monster when they found out that he didn’t die in the fire but the fire scared him so badly.
