Having more fun exploring Admiral Westergaard. He is kinda hard to draw, ngl. For the right one, I tried to give him a sociopathic stare. A smirk in this case.

Okay, here's my thought on Frozen.
Hans absolutely could have finished the job when he had Elsa in her ice castle.
He could have let that crossbow arrow hit her. Easily. Or he could've finished her when she passes out after the chandelier falls.
If you're arguing that the other men that were there would have seen it as treason, he absolutely could have argued that it was purely self defense. She was attacking them out of her own self defense but only the 2 crossbow wielders knew that. Everyone else thought she was just running, but they were also attacked by the raging snowman. So seeing all of this and the winter storm, all those men had it in their mind that she was evil anyways.
Hans could've defended that she was in fact a danger. She brought upon them this winter that no one was prepared for, and she attacked the men that just came to ask her to fix it, albeit more forcefully than Anna did.
Hans had every chance to finish her easily. He had the defense and a whole team of men to back up his word. He could've done the job, came back to the kingdom, used all of these arguments, married Anna (who was already dying of a frozen heart to begin with), and gotten the kingdom he wanted.
So... why did he choose to save her from the arrow, bring her back and put people in more danger?

❛ i suppose that's true . . . &* what if your heirs were just as dreadful dancers as he was ? you'd never escape the ridicule. ❜ a short laugh leaves him as he scrunches his nose. ❛ we shouldn't laugh at his expense. i'll just take it as a blessing ; it ensured i'd get a bit of your time this evening. ❜
it crossed aurora's mind, for a moment, that he could be the type of prince she couldn't make such jokes around ― but the short laugh that he gave and the grin across his lips told her she was in the clear. the princess playfully scoffed, going along with the charade. " selfish? why, am i not thinking of the kingdom, ensuring their future king can at least waltz? heaven forbid he offend every noblewoman he dances with, that seems a good way to start a war. " she said with a giggle, unable to keep a facade for long.

the pillow catches him off guard when it does land a solid smack to his face ----------- his reflexes have never been great. especially true when it comes to her, he's found. ( * he swears his jaw still feels off from that damned punch. it had been quite a while since anyone dared go straight at him. he would have better avoided her at ten than twenty. ) instead of anger , he finds himself laughing ---- a repeat of that boyish laughter from before. maybe it's her words or just the absurdity of her landing a shot on him again that draws forth the amusement. either way , his face feels warm from the exertion of displaying the joy.
❛ how do you think i learned how to woo you , anna ? it certainly wasn't from seeing true love first hand back home. ❜ he's still half giggling as he takes a bite of bread. ❛ everyone ignored me or made my life hell growing up ------- i learned from books. then experience , once at least the maids respected me. the ones who thought i was at least worth my looks anyway if i couldn't improve their lots in life. ❜
she is already very much considering throwing him overboard. it'll be a miracle if she can make it to supper without attempting to shove him into the ocean, she thinks. anna can feel his eyes glued to her as she bustles around the room, of which suddenly feels way too small despite how spacious it had felt a mere few minutes ago. she shudders, his gaze making her feel all . . creepy - crawly.
the princess groans dramatically at his words, at that stupidly smug, teasing smile. he doesn't even have to look at her in order to infuriate her. a moment later, she's suddenly hurling her pillow --- previously clutched to her chest like a shield --- across the room, directly where he sits on the edge of his bed. she's aiming for his face, mostly. maybe hoping she'll get lucky and he'll choke to death on a piece of bread or something. ❛ my gods, can you please stop saying the word ‘ impaled ’ already? ❜ of course, asking such a thing would mean she expects him to show some sort of mercy on her, but hey ----- maybe if she asks nicely, he'll shut up for just a few minutes.
she rubs at her temples as though the mere sound of his voice is enough to give her a headache, casting a sidelong glance at the chest of books now tucked away. she catches herself after a beat, glancing away before she can look like she was considering his suggestion too seriously. maybe. hopefully. ❛ enemies to lovers? ❜ she snorts instead, crossing her arms over her chest and forcing herself to finally glance over at him, an eyebrow raised. ❛ very funny. i'm surprised you'd read anything about love at all. ❜

a discreet glance is sent in the direction she gestures to , gaining a little laugh under his breath. ❛ you don't enjoy having your feet trampled then ? that might make you seem rather picky , your highness. valuing your toes over the chance of marrying someone who can't look you in the eye. how could you be so selfish ? ❜ he's teasing , of course , as is highlighted by his crooked grin.
a sigh of relief passed her lips at his comment, but the princess couldn't help as a short laugh also escaped her. " why, from the vultures who wish to sweep me off my feet, of course. " the latter words were said with a dramatized flare, the beauty pretending to swoon momentarily before she giggled in amusement. " i do not know if you realize this, your highness, but you're already a far more pleasant dance partner then that old lord over there, " her chin jutted up in the direction, " or his awkward son. "

⊹ ▐ * &. what kind of ‘ i love you ’ are you?
↳ i hate you. ( i love you. )
this is said with a sort of disbelief, that you can't believe you love this person, that you could never have imagined they would make you feel such affection &* fondness for them. they're a little shit, the most ridiculous person you've ever met, and you would absolutely die for them. you say “ i hate you, ” and they just shoot you that stupid grin of theirs. maybe they throw it back at you. neither of you has to say “ i love you, ” to know that you do. it goes without saying.

i'm thinking up how hans would still be a villain if he goes after a direct heir , negating him having to kill anyone / 'use' his evil side.
in frozen , he only reveals himself because his plan is to kill elsa to be able to take the throne. had anna not been dying , he wouldn't have ever said anything &* most likely kept up his nice guy facade. would it have cracked eventually because he'd get tired of pretending ? maybe. it could certainly slip out in anger or annoyance , or his aromanticism finally catching up to him with boredom from his spouses lovesickness. maintaining the level of prince charming he was at is quite a stark difference from his real personality after all.
he could take after his dad ----- project the benevolent ruler to the people , work in the shadows to rule cruelly behind the scenes. use the same level of threat against his partner that his father used against his mother. he has quite the upper hand with his powers. threatening his spouse would eventually bring up his own childhood trauma of knowing how desperate his mother was to protect him from this exact future , so there's that arc. his mother was injured because of hans powers , but ultimately died because the king put no effort into healing her ------- punishment for keeping hans away from him when they could have already been training him with his powers. ( * yes , he's talking about training a toddler. )
i find it difficult to imagine him staying a villain if he has love is the issue i'm running into here.
lets say for instance that he married anna. if he did not immediately stage an incident for elsa &* simply let the 3 years run into frozen 2 , thus having anna become queen -------- &* negating my rewrite of him becoming good through being the fire spirit ------- when exactly would he reveal his evil side ? there is a high possibility here that he would be treated so kindly &* lovingly by anna &* her support system that he would never need to reveal his darker nature because he'd know what love feels like. essentially , he'd find himself not wanting to be that dark self at all. why would he throw away all this good for nothing ?
he is evil because of his environment -- everyone in the southern isles is out to manipulate &* lie , so he's never been able to trust anyone. anna wouldn't lie to him or hide anything -- she has no ulterior motive. it might take him time to trust that , but ultimately being in a safe place would nurture the part of him that is good.
the only real corrupting point i can reach for is power. regardless of love shown to him , his main canon point is power. he wants to be king --- he wants to rule over people , have full control of a kingdom , financial freedom , etc. that is his drive. at the worst , that means he wants to extort other kingdoms , expand his kingdom by force , have an army , things like that. given his skill is lying &* manipulation , i can't imagine this comes with an iron fist publicly. no one wants to follow you if you're very vocally evil.
the issue now is that love factor. so . . . ultimately , he probably plans on killing his spouse after they have an heir or two , assuming said spouse is not also a tyrant. if we assume that he is never swayed by love because he can't feel it , he'd keep his heart completely away from his spouse &* feel nothing for eliminating them. possibly remarry simply to have more heirs. this is easier to maintain in verses where we aren't actively writing a romantic ship. so if we were writing friends or rivals , it's easier to have the romance to the side instead of as a driving feature of the plot.
i think in disney fashion , love will always win out if we're writing a romantic ship. it is possible to write him as a through &* through villain who never redeems himself , but it's a stretch in the end. he is not immune to love &* the effects true love would have. the only real way to write him as irredeemable is to lean into the psychopathy side where he can't feel love or empathy. given his backstory , that isn't the case. he's learned those traits through watching others &* surviving within his family -- they are not innate to his biology ; he was not born with that mental imbalance the way his family is. ( * sidenote --- his brother lud is also not a psychopath / sociopath. there's something unwell about him , but not to the degree of the rest of them. the rest feel absolutely no remorse for their torture against hans. )
i want to say a strong enough friend could also pull him into being good , but that's a bit more of an easy one to side-step. unless they are in power &* he is in a position where overthrowing them might give him the throne , ( i.e. killing anna &* elsa was going to work for him because he'd be the savior of arrendale &* thus given the crown -- granted , he did lie about marrying anna secretly, but it is implied that the kingdom probably would have turned to him either way ) what does he have to gain from letting them influence him ? if he can overthrow them &* get their power , he will try -- here love can step in again ; will he ultimately betray someone who is showing him true platonic love ? iffier , but he may switch to good. if they are simply a friend that is begging him to not be evil , he has nothing to gain from them other than maintaining a friendship. he wants power -- if they are not powerful &* therefore elevating him to power at their side , they are in his way.
all in all -- a redemption arc is pretty much always canon with anyone romancing him unless he truly truly dislikes them. even then , he has never known love , so anyone showing him genuine interest &* affection will probably win him over in the long run. while he may not expose a truly evil side unprovoked , he would eventually relax to show his more honest personality -- witty , sarcastic , more n s f w , brooding , etc. he would admit his prince charming act is dishonest , but he'd never go fully detached &* cruel without prompting. he'd have no reason to. i think he will always unlock the part of him he suppressed as a child --- the softer side that didn't want to hurt anyone &* believed in good.
#tldr ; it is always a bit of an au for him to /remain/ evil or even show his evil side if he doesn't have to if true love is involved#s. ━━ ⊹ ⊰ you can't run from this

she is far too easy to rile up. he knows he cannot maintain this level of bullying for the whole week , lest she throw him overboard. but right now ? well , he's just gotten here. he sits in smug silence as he watches her huff &* puff &* bustle around , busying herself with anything but looking at him calmly. finds himself dancing around the word cute in his head to describe her flittering. swiftly cuts that at the bud.
a soft hum is given as he considers the question , green eyes focused now on the bread in hand as he picks at some of the crust. ❛ depends on preference ---- plot versus just smut. if you prefer little story &* just sex , there's no shame in it ; that book in particular is just poorly written smut. ❜ shoulders rise &* fall. ❛ i prefer a better balance of both -------- stories that build up to it instead of just throwing you straight in. i don't like to be impaled as soon as i open the book , so to speak. ❜ a teasing smile , though he doesn't look at her.
❛ you tend to get swept up in romance , so it wouldn't surprise me if you prefer to . . . get to the point. ❜ there's no judgement in his tone. ❛ if that's accurate . . . that novel with the pirate hook is the best out of what i saw over there. but , if you're more like me --------- the one with the red posies on the cover. good old fashioned enemies to lovers. ❜ a soft little laugh leaves him as he pops some bread into his mouth.
❛ i live plenty, thank you very much! ❜ no one has ever managed to rile her up so easily, and she absolutely despises it. and him. he makes it hard to like him, when he's constantly poking and prodding and bringing up things she'd prefer not to talk about. especially with him. oddly enough, she thinks she'd prefer the week long of silence. ❛ and i am not repressed or ashamed, either! there are just ----- things i'd prefer not to talk about with you. ❜
chin is jutted out as she folds her arms over her chest stubbornly, very pointedly looking away from him as he slinks back towards his own bed. good. she feels like she can breathe a little easier again, without him so close and clearly wanting to shove his big nose all up into her business. business that shouldn't matter to him at all, really! ❛ it was only fun because everything that day was so new, not . . not because of you. or anything you did. you were just --- ❜ he was, well, him. all princely charm and flirty smiles and he'd made her feel special in a way she never had before. it had been an open door that she had all too eagerly walked through. ❛ a liar, ❜ is huffed out instead.
❛ don’t blame me for the word choice! it’s not like i wrote it! ❜ the book is practically thrown back into her mess, which she seems all too content with cleaning up now, rising to her feet and hastily tossing books back into her luggage containers, and then shoving the now rather heavy chest to the far wall with a series of dramatic grunts and groans. clearly, she’s over this show and tell. ❛ besides, i never said it was my favorite book in the whole wide world. i just —— wanted options, ❜ is murmured as she slumps back onto the bed again. there’s a beat of silence before she glances his way again, just barely doing so from the corner of her eye. ❛ what’s your favorite one, if you’re such an expert? ❜

❛ very loud. ❜ a soft , fond chuckle leaves him as he smiles at her , as if finding her reaction cute instead of improper. ( * is his home loud ? his family's voices certainly do echo down the empty halls he roams. he's never been welcome in the rooms they converse in. ) ❛ i'd love to hear it ----- given you aren't hoarse from talking to everyone for a week. i came here to meet you ; i don't want any condensed story. what a waste of a long trip that would be. ❜
at the admission of how many siblings he has, rapunzel's jaw drops. it's incredibly unladylike, and an improper reaction, but it's completely and one hundred percent genuine. just as quickly as it falls, rapunzel's lips press into a thin line in recovery. "forgive me, your highness," she apologizes. "i cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like with twelve siblings. it must get incredibly loud in your home," she says. "however do you manage?" a small smile spreads about pink lips now, and she scans the festival again, this time in disbelief. "never in my wildest dreams would i ever have thought this is what my life was meant to be like," she admits. "it's quite a long story, i'm afraid. i wouldn't want to burden you with all the details; but only if you'd want to hear them, i would be happy to tell you."
