Matthew Fairchild
The more I think about his character, the more I get upset. He was the definition of wasted potential and terrible character arcs.
I simply cannot understand how on earth he thought it was okay to eavesdrop on a very personal conversation, and then end up making the entire situation about his past. First of all, it lacked basic courtesy and respect for him to listen in as if it was his business to. Secondly, he tries to console Cordelia by "empathising" with her - which is not in fact comforting, rather it brings attention to his feelings instead.
I recently listened to a talk at school about empathy and I think it fits perfectly with this situation. When you try to console someone by using your troubles and focusing on them, it may feel as if you're not truly caring for the person. It feels as though you're taking away the importance of their feelings by centering yourself.
He acknowledges the unfair treatment he gives to Alastair, but makes absolutely no move to correct himself. It is implied he is very much aware of how he treats Alastair - to the point he puts the blame for almost everything on Alastair. He is simply being vindictive and petty now, and although he realises that, he doesn't actively try to change. What's the point if you don't make an effort? It's pointless and makes the issue so much worse.
The promises he made to Cordelia. As someone who has relatives that deal with alcoholic problems, the handling of Matthew's alcoholism in that chapter was not okay. You cannot "vow" to stop being alcoholic and act on it without any sort of help - that's just not how it works. In this case, running away to another country isn't a solution either. I am fairly certain Matthew is making a promise to Cordelia he would not be able to keep.
This point isn't a 100% Matthew's fault, but more of what CC was trying to achieve. All that empty promises and impulse decisions were a plot device for the next book. That doesn't make it alright though. Matthew going "I promise to stop drinking" (in context it seemed to be to convince Cordelia to come, and if I'm interpreting that correctly it makes things even worse) as if it was that simple was ridiculous.
This book made me want to reach out through the pages and grab Matthew by his collar to shout: "Stop making me hate you!". His character was by far one of the most disappointing parts of COI.
