What do you use to learn your languages? I'm wanting to start learning some but I have a bad time learning without something to follow
A lot of the apps out there like Duolingo ad Menrise for example are strictly for memorizing which honestly doesn’t work at all…it does help with vocab or if you are following along with a language learning book you can often find that book on memrise to help you along. I love language books but I don’t recommend them alone because you won’t get accent, tones, or pronunciation alone, but it does provide information on structure and grammar in sentences along with a lot of practice and work pages which you absolutely need even if you don’t have a book.
The absolutely first thing I recommend is learning the alphabet and sounds and how to read the language. When you are able to read the language, you can pick up new words easily and notice very quickly grammar patterns. The alphabets of several languages can be learned through individual apps (for example if you want to learn French you can search ‘French alphabet’ in the App Store), or my personal fav YouTube!
After you have learned how to read and pronounce the letters I would move on to words and phrases that you would actually use every day to describe, narrate, or journal your life in that language. Gathering vocab what you’ll use every day in real life is most useful.
Lean phrases that you can use as tools to learn from natives “is this sentence correct?” “How do you say this_____?” “Can you correct my sentence/pronunciation?” “Thank you, you’ve helped a lot!” “Can you tell me why that’s correct?” “Is it more natural?”
As soon as you learn vocab begin speaking them to natives and having them correct your pronunciation. My favorite app for this is Hi-Native. The app is completely non-personal, no personal information about has the option of being on the site since it’s NOT a social network site (not even your name, age, nothing but your target language, native language, and questions you’ve asked previously). Your questions are posted to native speakers publicly and you can answer questions for your native language if you like. You can post questions about pretty much everything and the questions are organized by topic. I’ve never seen anything worse on there then a non native English speaker saying “what does (curse word) mean?” You can also write simple sentences and have them corrected!
Read books in your target language, write down words you don’t understand and add them to a quizlet flash card set (quizlet app). Listen to native speakers (movies, podcasts, news and again YouTube)! Instagram has lots of native speakers and also comics and everything from all over the world!
When you are able to understand basic sentences look up words you don’t understand in a dictionary that is ONLY in your target language (NOT one that is translated to your native language).
There are also websites and podcasts dedicated to teaching languages and they are usually amaaaaaazing. I use them often for grammar, vocab, daily sentences and so much more. For example “Talk to me in Korean” is a fantastic popular app for Korean and deserves all the applause it gets.
A lot of the languages that aren’t as common can be a bit more difficult to find materials on but they are everywhere.
99% of the time translators are garbage and make you sound weird and awkward, they are good in a pinch and for very basic sentences and some vocab, but it’s much easier going on Hi-Native and asking a native “How do you say this in ____”
If you feel overwhelmed by all the materials and information, feel free to just use a simple app like duolingo or memrise to get started and when you know your learning has been haulted (when you know a lot of words but can’t make sentences or speak well), add in grammar and other things slowly.
Set a timer and schedule study time in your daily life. Here’s what I did:

After I wrote this out, i put it into a study app so I know exactly what languages and subjects I’m studying every day, and there’s a timer to time myself.
Here was this morning before I studied (the time says zero hours, zero activities completed)

Here’s a breakdown of one study day (I believe it was Tuesday?), (I had just got this app) although the graph will eventually be the entire week. There’s also a bar graph.
Here’s what the bar graph looks like:
All the apps I mentioned are free :) (The study app is called Easy Study) I study pretty intensely because I have lots of free time and I have 6 target languages but 30 mins of dedicated time DAILY is really good!! Schedule your grammar and sentence construction days you want to sit at a desk, and your vocab, Speaking, Listening, and reading on days you would like to study in bed! I hope that helps!

Do you have any resources like apps, websites, or youtube channels for learning Korean? Thxs (sorry if this has been asked before)
No worries, you’re literally the second person ever to send me an ask and I’m stoked to share my learning resources! And they’re all free, with the exception of some purchasable options.
Anki: if you’re serious about learning Korean I can’t recommend this program enough. I know there are other flashcard programs out there (like Quizlet and Memrise), but Anki is unparalleled in its capacity for customization. I’ve been learning six new words per day for a year and a half now, and there’s no way I could have done it without Anki. And I don’t even know how to use a lot of its features. (I recommend creating your own deck, but if not, Evita’s decks are worth checking out.)
How to Study Korean: unique in that it’s written by a native English speaker who self-studied Korean. There are over a hundred lessons with sample sentences, vocabulary, and audio by a native Korean speaker. The grammar explanations can be a bit dense, but overall it’s one of the best free resources.
Talk to Me in Korean: pretty well-known; their podcasts are good and some of their videos are excellent. I enjoy their Iyagi series for intermediate learners. Depending on where you live, shipping their books can be super expensive, but they have some good ebooks for sale.
LingoDeer: an app that I might recommend for beginners…with reservations. Personally, I’m glad I learned the basics through HTSK and TTMIK because LingoDeer has some oddities, but I think it could still be useful. (I’ve actually not used it much, but I’ve taken some of the tests just to see what it’s like.) I’ve seen some pretty good reviews of it around and about, though.
NaverDict: Naver’s dictionary app has a dictionary for Korean learners, which is my personal go-to. There’s also a daily beginner-level conversation (with audio) that could be useful.
Bonus–Korean for Internauts: this is a just-for-fun resource that I’ve recommended before. The writing is excellent, it teaches fun slang, and there are a lot of interesting insights into Korean culture.
There are a ton more online resources out there! I’m also not very familiar with beginner-level resources, so if anyone has more, feel free to add!
I hope this is helpful, and good luck!

*PLEASE READ/SIGNAL BOOST*
Tuesday, October 2nd - Hi everyone, I’m Gemma your local burden back with another of these dumb posts as I still desperately need help to get through this month.
As many of you may or may not know, I’ve been struggling a lot these past few months with my government, benefits and trying to keep my home and it is thanks to so many wonderful and caring individuals (one in particular) that I was able to pay my rent on time and avoid the prospect of homelessness, as well as pay a vast majority of my overdue bills, which have continuously built up in arrears over the past few months due to myself having no income.
However, a few of my bills such as my Gas (pictured) and Electricity have remained unpaid and I desperately need help to keep them on until I receive government aid, which won’t be until October 25th. I know that I have asked this a lot these past few months and all the help I have previously received has literally helped me from spiraling into more debt and helped me to eat and stay warm so far and I absolutely hate to ask for more help but I have no one else to turn to or any belonging to sell and due to a PayPal charge-back (pictured), I’m now back in the red and can’t even afford to buy more groceries/supplies for this month.
If anyone could spare any amount to help me, even if it’s just £1/$1/€1, it would literally save my life and, sharing definitely helps just as much as donations. Nobody has to donate if they can’t or don’t want to, I know we’re all struggling. Thank you for your help 💖

DISABLED MASTERS STUDENT NEEDS FOOD AND RENT
Hi y’all I’m back with another post! Here’s the link to my previous post, the basic run down is that I’m disabled, currently suffering with carpal tunnel (waiting for my referral letter to come through to the hand and arm specialist), and I’m trying to finish my masters. I’m unable to work currently because of my carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia (which I want to stress is NOT just minor pain, it causes many issues which means I can only dedicate myself to either working or doing university work.) and a cocktail of mental health issues. I just moved in with my grandparents, who are both retired. They aren’t pressuring me for money but have vocalized that they do think I should help with costs if I can, which at the moment, I really can’t.
As you can see, I only have £52.51 left of my overdraft as of 13/09/18. I’m exploring other avenues of making some extra cash but a lot of them require me to spend either a lot of time at the computer or getting a part time job, both of which I’m technically not allowed to do while I have carpal tunnel and still trying to finish my masters work.
If you can donate, please do, if not, or just don’t want to, please reblog/share it! I appreciate reblogs just as much as donations! Thankyou to all who shared my post previously. I’ll be tagging as #caperpls!

my stupid fucking irresponsible lazy bitch of a so called “mother” doesn’t have a fucking job and used my name + my income + my credit history to rent a room while me and my sister stayed in family housing on campus at my university. she was supposed to get a fucking job and pay the rent so she could save to get us a place together, but she fucked that up and now her landlord wants to evict her.
if she gets evicted, i will have an eviction on my record which will disqualify me from renting anywhere for a minimum of 5 years.
her landlord gave her 3 days to either pay the money, or he will evict her. 3 days.
my options are
pay the $800 she owes in back rent
file bankruptcy and f*ck my credit up for 7 years and have the court take money out of my paychecks to pay her debt but still allows her to keep her apartment
allow the eviction to proceed and she gets put out but my rental history is f*cked for 5-10 years and i am disqualified form renting an apartment until that waiting period is over
as you can probably see, this is not fair. especially when you add on the fact that i took on the burden of caring for my sister while she was supposedly getting her life together. in all likelihood, i will probably end up filing a bankruptcy, but i made this post as a last resort that possibly, somehow i could miraculously get the money to pay off the debt, and then tell her to go fuck herself and get her own lease with her own name on it like a fucking responsible adult would.
i feel terrible doing this. i feel guilty and awful and entitled and stupid and embarsssed. but please, PLEASE, help me out here if you can. I don’t know if this will even do any good, but I don’t have many options left. im not ever doing this again after this.

This is glorious and even thought it doesn’t fit in the range of all the paranormal, I MUST share
It works like this: You tell Kitestring that you’re in a dangerous place or situation, and give it a time frame of when to check in on you. If you don’t reply back when it checks your status, it’ll alert your emergency contacts with a custom message you set up.
It doesn’t require you to touch anything (like bSafe) or shake your phone (like Nirbhaya) to send the distress signal. Kitestring is smarter, because it doesn’t need an action to alert people, it needs inaction.

But really my primary dream for Guys Being Spies is a flashback where they’re in the UK being up to shenanigans and undercover and Dylan busts out this flawless Scottish accent and Julian’s like “wtf” and Dylan’s like “I sat next to a Scotsman on the flight over. Phonographic memory’d.”

I love how they could have gone with the typical “I’m smart so I get to be an asshole” trope with Dylan and instead he’s sweet, and supportive, and a little arrogant sometimes but he honestly wants what’s best for his husband and his new best friend. He’s kind, and genuine, and polite, and his snark is good-natured instead of condescending (BBC Sherlock) or downright mean (House MD).
It’s a little bit subversive because I don’t see many characters acting like this in the mainstream, but also a little bit “easter-eggy” because all things considered it’s sort of abnormal behavior.
