the swift parrot is a small, brightly colored parrot endemic to southeastern australia. they are primarily bright green with red on the chin, underwings, and tail; females are similar to but duller in coloration than males. they primarily feed on the nectar of flowering eucalyptus trees. these birds are cavity nesters, like many other parrots; however, they are much more selective about the appropriate nesting cavity than most other species. swift parrots prefer cavities with small entrances but wide internal dimensions, which are difficult to find & compete for. logging has had a severe negative impact on the swift parrot, destroying much of their former range and already hard to come by nesting sites. the swift parrot is now considered critically endangered; it’s believed that as of 2023 approximately 300 remain. additionally, conservationists are now struggling to counteract a different threat; introduced sugar gliders have recently spread within the swift parrot’s range, and they have quickly become a top predator for nesting females and chicks.
