Study Spell:
This spell is a charm for retaining information when studying and to stay calm and collected on testing day.
Any container that can be carried on your person. (I made a little square pouch a lot like a little pillow with a loop to put on a keychain.)
Rosemary (memory, knowledge)
Lavender (comfort, calming)
Pencil shavings (studying, written information)
A small piece of paper
Green pen
Feathers or some kind of soft stuffing, enough to fill your container the rest of the way (to make your mental burdens and anxiety light)
For a bottle container, layer your ingredients into your bottle, leaving a little room for your piece of paper at the end. For the little cloth pouch, stuff it all in there (of course visualizing your intent while doing so with each ingredient) and leave a bit for the paper.
On your piece of paper, write with the green pen a sigil for remembering, comfort or studying, and/or write: "Remain calm when testing day comes, have confidence, study, this is what must be done."
Add your rolled up piece of paper to. your container and seal it either by wax (bottle) or sewing it closed (pouch).
And you're done! You can charge it any way you like and keep it on you whenever you're studying or taking your test. I like the mini keychain pillow idea because it's soft and squishy and I can fidget with it in my pocket.

About Ancestors: The Beloved Dead
This post originally came from my website.
Witchcraft generally divides ancestors into two broad categories: the Beloved Dead and the Mighty Dead. For this post, weāre going to focus on the Beloved Dead, which are familial ancestors.

Who are the Beloved Dead?
The Beloved Dead are what most people think of when they hear āancestorsā: family members who have long since passed. Although the Beloved Dead are often called the āancestors of blood,ā they donāt require blood relations. Familial dead also include adoptive families and in-laws. After all, family is family. Some people divide the Beloved Dead into subcategories, such as the Ancestors of Milk and Honey (in-laws). For this post, Iāll refer to all of them as your familial ancestors.
What if I donāt know my ancestors?
If you donāt know your ancestral line, donāt fret. In my experience within the community, most witches ask ancestors to come to them. You donāt need to have met your ancestors, or even know their name, to work with them. Ancestors can be contacted in two ways: communicating with specific souls, or calling out whoever wishes to respond. Iāll cover both of these methods later.
On Abusive Ancestors.
When discussing ancestor work, one of the main topics that pops up is abusive family members. In fact, this is one reason why people contact the Beloved Dead: to achieve clarity and healing for previous trauma. If youāre going to contact abusive ancestors, keep two things in mind: (1) the dead may carry their attitude with them, BUT can also receive clarity in death; (2) you donāt HAVE to contact them. Communicating with rude or uncooperative spirits is emotionally taxing. Donāt risk your health or happiness over it. Sometimes, an ancestor may turn out to be rude, manipulative, or stubborn. Donāt feel the need to continue with this soul. You are never obligated to heal or put up with taxing spirits. If a relationship turns too sour, donāt hesitate to contact a different ancestor.
What if my ancestors have a different religion?
This is one of the most common questions I receive about ancestor work, and itās a valid concern. Most new spirit workers worry that their ancestors wonāt cooperate due to religious differences. While this is sometimes the case, Iāve learned that many soulsāeven hardcore Christian souls in lifeāare surprisingly lenient in death. When I first worked with my grandfather, a devout Catholic, he was more than happy lend me graveyard dirt for my magic. To him, it was like giving me a sweater when he was alive. He felt happy to give his granddaughter presents again. As you can probably tell, my ancestral line is Irish Catholic. While some of them refuse to partake in witchcraft, others gladly participate once they learn that itās for my own protection, healing, profit, etc. My main piece of advise is this: Donāt decide whether or not theyāll participate before they do.
How to contact the Beloved Dead
You have a closer link to the Beloved Dead than any other ancestor. As such, theyāre fairly easy to contact (in comparison to other spirits). Much of spirit work requires a physical link to the soul, and ancestor magic is no different. One option is to use your ancestorās graveyard dirt (sometimes called ancestor powder). If you have your ancestorās ashes, these work similarly. Another option is to use family heirlooms. Old photographs, books, tea sets, clothes, furnitureāany heirloom should do the trick. Youāll have an easier time signaling the Beloved Dead if you have a direct link to their soul. If you own some of these, harness their energy before communicating with the Beloved Dead. For instance, focus on the energy while calling your ancestors to you. I highly recommend using these objects during divination. If you know your ancestorās name, call it out, and clarify āof the ___ familyā (to prevent souls of the same name from arriving). If you donāt know their names, ask for an ancestor of the ____ family to come. Evoke the Beloved Dead through a ritual with offerings and, of course, adequate spiritual protection. If you donāt have your ancestorās heirlooms or graveyard dirt, you can achieve this without them. A piece of yourselfāsuch as a hair clipping or finger nailācan go a long way. Remember, youāre blood-related to the Beloved Dead.
Offerings For The Beloved Dead
Offerings vary depending on ethnicity and culture. Some general offerings include dark bread, cakes, wine, tobacco, milk, water, candles, stones, flowers, artwork, letters, or items that represent their religious faith. Well-fed ancestors are more likely to repay you, whether that be through protecting their offspring, increasing your luck, advising your craft, or pouring their power into your spells. If you can, maintain regular offerings for your ancestors.
Why should I do this?
First and foremost, contacting the Beloved Dead unites you with your family line and traditions. If you feel disconnected from your culture or ethnicity, you may want to work with the Beloved Dead. In America, many descendants of immigrations feel stripped of their ancestral roots. The Beloved Dead teach you how to reconnect with them (as well as the Mighty Dead). Second, ancestors are more likely to help you than other spirits. Powerful, well-known spirits have a lot of people knocking on their door, but few practitioners are summoning your great-grandmother. Your familial ties guarantee that you already have something in common. The Beloved Dead can become valuable allies and guides for your craft. Third, the Beloved Dead are easier to contact than other deceased souls. Thereās a higher chance that theyāll respond and get along with you. Finding physical links, offerings, and tools is relatively simply compared to most of death witchcraft. If youāre a beginner spirit worker, consider working with the Beloved Dead.
Consider this post to be a primer, one that will kickstart your work with the Beloved Dead. To learn more, research more ancestor sources and your cultureās funerary traditions.

I've been seeing flashes of gold here and there, lately. Thank you!
Should you see a flicker of golden out of the corner of your eye, this is your reminder to keep an open mind in the rediscovering of what makes your creativity soar. Ask yourself who or what you love in this life, and begin to truly seek it.
If you come across a growing bed of moss, this is your reminder to keep a strong grasp upon a potentially-lessening sense of childhood whimsy. Revisit the pages of a fairy tale, lose yourself in a dance, or hum a little more often.
When you are crossed by a cat whilst out for a stroll, this is your reminder to keep your eyes open. Be wary of people who may not be as they seem, and hold close your aura. Let your conscience be your guide, and allow for your spirit to maintain its protective barrier.
Should you come across a flat stone whilst near a body of water, this is your reminder to manifest any untapped dreams that may have been left to sit quietly. Retrieve the rock, make a wish, and toss it within the waters' depths.
If you wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of an owl's call, this is your reminder to keep in better contact with those you love. When the next day arrives; give your grandparents a call, write a letter to a friend, tell a teacher or instructor how important they are to you, hug a parent or pet or caregiver for an extra-long time. Remember the fleetingness of existence, and cherish those who bestow your time here with such special moments. ā”

The Shy Fox's Guide to Scrying
Iāve been getting a TON of questions regarding scrying lately. Whether itās about types of scrying or how itās done, it can be a little complicated and confusing! A lot of people donāt understand what exactly scrying entails, and Iāve been reading about it and doing it for a while, so I thought Iād make a post about it.
What is scrying?
Have you ever sat outside and looked at the clouds, and seen imagery in the clouds? Or maybe you look at a tree and see a pattern in the leaves and branches. Perhaps youāre staring off into space and you start to daydream or you see images in the wall.
Scrying is a form of divination which utilizes oneās subconscious mind and the images that the subconscious forms. Scrying typically is done using some type of blank surface, usually a dark one, and gazing into it. The diviner then interprets what they āseeā. Oftentimes the diviner will write down the images they see and interpret them based on predetermined symbolism or their personal interpretations of symbols and images. Itās all up to each person!
So how does it work?
It really depends on the method being used. Typically, the diviner starts off with some meditation to clear their mind. Oftentimes, a question or thought is meditated on for the diviner to search for the answers to. They then use any number of techniques to āseeā what their subconscious tells them about the question being presented. Oftentimes the diviner writes down what they see either as they go or afterwards, depending on personal preference.
There are quite a few different methods, the most common ones typically being water scrying, wax scrying, and mirror scrying, though I know a lot of people do it different ways! Let me give you the breakdown on some of the common types.
Mirror Scrying
Mirror scrying is probably the most common form I see people use, and itās the one that I think youāll see most in pop culture next to crystal ball scrying. Mirror scrying is done through the use of a scrying mirror, a very dark (typically pitch black)Ā āmirrorā. Often after meditation, the diviner gazes into the mirror and relaxes, letting their mind wander. Visions often take shape, whether it be in the form of numbers, letters, shapes, symbols, etc. The diviner then interprets what theyāve seen based on either popular associations with those numbers, symbols, etc., or they interpret them based on personal belief.Ā
Crystal Ball Scrying
This one is pretty common too, and itās what a lot of people associateĀ āwitchesā andĀ āfortune tellersā with! Itās basically the same process as mirror scrying, but instead of a mirror, the diviner uses a crystal ball. The same process is followed as above. I think a lot of people like this for the aesthetic of it, but itās not my personal favorite. (also crystal balls are expensive a lot of times and Iiiiii am most certainly on a budget)
Water Scrying
Water scrying is pretty similar to mirror scrying! Itās the same process, but rather than using a mirror, the diviner takes a bowl (again, usually of a dark color) and fills it with water. The process stated in mirror scrying is repeated. Results are usually a bit different, since the water can ripple and move in ways that a solid object obviously canāt. Itās pretty similar to mirror scrying though!
Wax Scrying
I really enjoy this method, but Iāve not used it all that much. Wax scrying is typically done by meditating on the question/thought, then either lighting a candle afterwards or having a candle lit beforehand/during the meditation. The diviner then drips the wax from the candle into a bowl of water, and interprets the symbols and shapes that the wax forms when it hits the water. This form of scrying is awesome for beginners (or for those with short attention spans like myself) since the images stick around and you donāt have to try to remember all that you see in your mindās eye! Just always remember to be cautious with your candles; donāt let them burn down if you meditate for a long time!
Tea Leaves
Iām not sure if some people would call thisĀ āscryingā but to me, itās still a type of scrying. I believe the proper term for reading tea leaves is called tasseography/tasseomancy. This oneās a fun one! Essentially, instead of meditating, you fix yourself a cup of tea and focus on your question as you prepare your tea. Continue to focus on it as you drink it, really nursing the thought as you sip your tea. Once youāve come down to the very end of it, youāll see the tea leaves floating in the bottom of the cup. Quickly upturn your cup over the sink, then flip it over and look at the leaves. The patterns and shapes they form are you answers. Iāve always thought tasseomancy is awesome, but Iām not a big tea drinker, so I donāt really do it. If you love tea, tasseomancy is probably a great form of divination for you!
Raindrop Divination
You donāt hear about this one much, buuuuut I saw a great tumblr post about it, and I thought it was really neat! The post explains it much much better than I can, so I highly recommend you go there if youāre interested. Itās a great post, not super long, and definitely something fun to try if you live in a rainy area!
Those are some of my favorites, but thereās more out there, I can almost guarantee that. Search around and find one you like!
But Fox! This sounds so complicated and Iām just getting started!
Believe me when I say scrying of any form takes practice, patience, and yes, itās going to be really intimidating at first! My recommendation to you is to practice, practice, practice. Do a small scrying in the morning to see what your day will be like, and see how accurate it is at the end of the day. Offer free scryings to other people. Tumblr is a great place to do that! The community is lovely and I adore the feedback I get! Everyoneās always got something nice to say, so really, donāt be afraid to offer readings on here. Go for it!
Great, but I canāt afford any of the fancy tools! What do I do now?
The answer is simple: you donāt need fancy tools. Got a cell phone? Use the blank screen under low light for mirror scrying. Have a dark colored plastic bowl? Use that for water scrying! Old candles nobody uses anymore? GrabĀ āem and useĀ āem. Donāt feel like you have to use special fancy tools to be a good diviner. I use a rusty ring on a piece of yarn as a pendulum and my laptop screen as a scrying mirror. I donāt have the fancy tools, but I do divinatory stuff anyway! Itās okay not to haveĀ āprofessional gradeā tools. Make use of what you have :)
Oh, cool! So where do I go from here?
Take what youāve learned and practice, practice, practice! If youāre still confused, you can always message me, or any other tumblr users in the witchy community. Google is your friend too! The important things to remember here are: donāt be afraid to ask questions, and donāt be afraid to just give it a try. Youāll never get better if you donāt try. So donāt be afraid! Everyone has to start somewhere.
Go forth and do some great work! I believe in you!
~The Shy Fox
