My best friend of 20 years (she from Virginia and me from Maryland) and I have somehow ended up living a mile away from each other in Milwaukee because life is beyond weird and unpredictable.
She is an infection preventionist. Her job is to deal with shit like Covid.
So we haven’t seen each other since I had my St Pats get together, which I knew would be the last time I would see friends for a while.
We have had, since then, a standing FaceTime appointment every Sunday morning to chat since we can’t hang out anymore.
This morning I surprised her by sneaking into her backyard for our morning meeting so we could see each other face to face. (From 6 feet away of course).
I can’t tell you how good it was to see my friend again.
It’s funny. She and I were never the type that needed to hang out all the time. We could not talk to each other for months. But every time we did talk, it was like the conversation never stopped.
She is a hard ass just like me. But motherfucker if we haven’t both completely broken.
I have never seen her cry the way she has recently. Not for 20 years.
It was so good to see my friend.
We masked up and sanitized and gave each other a good strong hug.
I miss my friend.
This is all so insane.

Scratch that.
I’m plain exhausted.
My physical and mental self have reached a breaking point.
My fuse is so short it’s not existent. I snap at nothing. I get into spats that shouldn’t happen. I’m defensive in every scenario. I get angry about things that normally wouldn’t bother me. I have been so close to saying not good things in work meetings. I feel defeated.
I know it’s me. I know I need to work on things.
I’m just so damn tired.

So tired you guys.
So, so very tired.

Some days you’re just done.
Finished.
Time to get some sleep and try again.

Times of Crisis
I learned these things when I went through the chaos of my mom having a major stroke and cancer, but the lessons I learned translate perfectly to the current course of events.
Times of crisis don’t change you or anyone around you. Times of crisis emphasize your character traits and the traits of those around you. Period.
Times like this bring out the true essence of us all. And these are opportunities to reevaluate who you are and to reevaluate the relationships you have.
You will find out what you hold dear and who your friends and foes are. You will have to decide what kind of concessions you are willing to make.
There will be hardships you will have to endure, but you have a choice as to who you surround yourself with.
Times like this bring out the best and the worst in everyone.
I could go on for hours.
But, at the end of the day. You will find out who is against you and who is with you. And you will not convince those against you to change. You have to let them go and unite with your friends.
You will find (and I’m sure you already have) that those choices become very obvious.

This has very much been me.
Naps have been my middle name. And it doesn’t matter where.
My mind is constantly on overdrive because of all of the things so I get exhausted. I hit a wall and can’t function anymore.
So I sleep.
If my young, non-napping, needing an absolutely-perfect-quiet-dark-comfortable-place-to-sleep self saw me now, I don’t know if she would laugh or cry or both.

In light of recent events and seeing all these photos, it makes me remember when Obama started crying when he talked after Sandy Hook. It showed he has a heart.

When I was little I watched the original Star Trek regularly and loved it. Then as a tween I loved Star Trek the Next Generation. I’ll admit, after that I lost interest but it was enough to make me like Star Trek in general and I have enjoyed the old and new movies so much.
It’s why I love Galaxy Quest so much. It’s so perfect. It hits on all the ridiculous stuff that is so enjoyable about Star Trek.
On that note, it’s been a long time since I watched the original Star Trek series. During quarantine, I have made it a ritual to watch an episode during my lunch break to unwind a little.
Maybe it’s because I was so young, but I did not remember that Kirk’s shirt almost always gets ripped or removed in some way in so many episodes! It makes Galaxy Quest all the better!
🤣
