okay but the fact that todd was clearly just starting to get completely comfortable around the rest of the dead poets, only for neil to die, literally makes me cry.

like the bathroom scene is the perfect example of this. he’s so smiley and getting along with the others, messing around with them in a way that he wasn’t ever before in the movie. he’s laughing at charlie’s antics, jokingly ruining cameron’s hair, and even cracking a few jokes himself come on charlie, the girls are waiting. he’s doing all his and more (such as him cheering for neil with charlie, cameron, and meeks during the play), and he’s truly happy and comfortable.

and then neil dies, and todd as a comfortable and smiling boy is literally ripped away from all the poets. from then on, he’s grief stricken until the end of the movie, much the same as everyone else, but the movie does focus so strongly on todd’s grief compared to the others just because of how much neil’s death affected him. and i think it’s this emphasis that exemplifies the full impact that neil had on todd, inspiring to be himself and be part of the group, only for it to be violently crushed down by outside forces. idk just thinking

Charlie Dalton is a John Keating Variant.

I’ve convinced myself that, though most people think Todd became an english teacher after high school, it was actually Charlie. I don’t believe Todd didn’t, but I like the idea that Charlie did. Keating never exactly discourages Charlie’s- being the way he is, encourages it even, and I think it’s because Keating was the same way in high school. Keating was in the Dead Poets Society, and probably had an english teacher he looked up to the way Charlie and the poets look up to him. I think it’s a like a generational cycle type of thing. In high school, Keating probably acted the way Charlie does in his class in the movie, and his english teacher probably didn’t discourage him either. Keating looked up to his teacher and went onto become a teacher himself, and I feel the same thing happened with Charlie Dalton.
