TRU U
For those of you that struggle with identity issues, I feel you. As a newborn we are thrusted into the world, a big, scary ever-changing place. A place much larger than the womb you had rented for the past nine months. We as humans are constantly developing, from ape to man, newborn to toddler to teen to adult: there is no end to the evolution process. But it’s the influences and influencers in our lives that mould us to whom we are today. Our physical self is only a fragment of our identity. I am not disregarding your physical appearance, but exterior beauty isn’t everything. It represents the changes and phases that we endure in life. Its a visible effect of how we feel in that current moment. reflects how we feel in that current moment. If you want to go goth, do it. If you want to dye your hair blonde, do it. If you want to get a tattoo, do it. But do it whole heartedly and do everything with passion. Our appearance can be augmented, manipulated and disguised but there is one part of us resilient to any change: our fingerprints. From birth we are stamped with a code that is completely unique. A gift from God in our most precious state. These prints will always be yours - the only physical element that is permanent. Life experiences, good or bad contribute to whom we are. They act as fibres that piece together the unique puzzle which is you. We are dealt these lessons to learn from them. Hoist up your pants and keep going, this is just one of many hurdles life throws at you. Consider them as blessings, as they contribute to your personal fibres - the elements that make you, you. At times we feel lost. Like we’ve wandered away from our true selves. Times like these call for reflection. Take a hard look at your fingertips. Study the intricate patterns shared across your hands. Like a map they will lead you back home. They have remained the same, therefore the coordinates will never change. The search for our true identity and self acceptance is a arduous one. Like a trek up Mount Everest, the peak is almost impossible to reach - but It can be done. is So we scale the mountain, braving tumultuous weather and endangering our lives to reach the highest point in the world. Like in life, we go through ups and downs, friends come and go - love grows and dries up. These are just another camp along the journey. They allow us to rest, and pick up from where we left off. We eventually reach the pinnacle of self acceptance. We look back at those experiences as a tiny steps in the grand scheme of things. People influence in the way we act, dress, speak, eat - even live. These could be positive or negative influences, but either way they can lead you astray when searching for the real you. We need to be happy in our own skin. To be able to look in a mirror and love what’s looking back at you whole heartedly. Contentment in oneself will attract happiness, love and abundance. Your beauty will radiate and your aura will glow. It’s that person that people will remember. Be that person, the real you. Take a look in the mirror, what do you see? A person radiating love and happiness? If not, we have some more work to do.

Flatlands features paintings by five emerging artists—Nina Chanel Abney, Mathew Cerletty, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Caitlin Keogh, and Orion Martin—that conjure a sense of space that is dimensionless and airless, like the illusionistic scenery flats used on stage and movie sets. These artists create tension in their works that stems from competing sentiments of anxiety and desire, suggesting simultaneously the allure and discontent of our current moment.
