"That's fine, but I'd prefer to work alone. I'm not exactly the type for group projects." Far be it from him to admit a personal flaw, but it wasn't exactly hard to piece together anyways.

After injuring Kimberly, there were precious little children who didn't stay a full ten feet away from him.

Save for Kel, an obvious harassment campaign that he was strangely allowing of to some. Aubrey of all people probably knew why, though.

Breaking Kel's arm wouldn't do anything to shut him up.

"Do you have any particular opinions or needs towards the amount of damage I should inflict? Oh, and do assume I will exploit the upper limit within your allowances."

If she said 'go all out', he'd really have to commit to it...but she wasn't going to say that, was she? She was a normal, troubled teenager.

Faraway town was full of all sorts, and that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing all the time. Today, though, it made her shudder — all sorts meant there were creeps like him, after all. All sorts meant this fucker, who took some sick joy in the idea of her breaking another kid’s arm and leg, roamed around this town all the same.

Still, perhaps Aubrey herself was the cruel one. It was her suggestion after all — and while she took no joy in the idea, she nonetheless accepted his terms. All it costed her was…

“An arm and a leg. Got it.” Not hers, though. If it was hers, maybe she’d feel a little less bad about it. This was one of the few things she had that she could do, though. … it wasn’t like Aubrey was particularly skilled in much, nor well-liked around town. While this would surely tarnish her reputation further, it wasn’t like she had a good one in the first place.

“Yeah… There’s this guy who’s trying to blackmail me. I don’t want my friends finding out about it, because I don’t want anybody I care about to get involved, or in his line of fire. I just need someone else who can threaten him — I don’t think I’ll be enough on my own.”

Hah, so she did have something. This was interesting. Though it was possible he needed to control himself more if the girl had figured she ought to target Daisuke.

And she clearly didn't like what she was offering, but it wouldn't make her uncomfortable if it was an empty offer. She would do it.

"One leg, and the opposite forearm." That would look more attractive than a wheelchair. "And I want a video. Though that can just be after his leg is taken out, to make it easier for you."

"What a horrible person." There was something satisfying in imagining that being thought of him.

Attention. Even peripheral attention. He was someone Aubrey needed to worry about, a problem for her.

"So? There's quite an issue at hand you need solving, no? Rest assured, you'll have my full cooperation." She'd gotten what she wanted, and, however she might feel about it, a greater amount of Ken's respect than she previously had.

Ugh. Aubrey really, really did not like this guy. But she did need his help. And… she did have an offer, though it really felt like making a deal with the devil. No matter how she sliced it, in this situation, she was going to be mean. She was going to hurt someone. And it was going to be on purpose.

“That kid you like picking on, Daisuke or whatever. I’ll break his legs for you.” She does not make eye contact. She looks away, closing her eyes. Wincing with the thought.

But the thing was, she would do it. She would hate it, but she would. Aubrey was that desperate.

Ken had never been particularly obedient in the heat of the moment. He went with whatever course of action his instincts picked, which could at best coincidentally be the same thing Mari wanted.

He had never had it impressed upon him that it was vital to listen. His brother was erratic and emotional most times he made a demand of him, and his parents didn't notice him.

Today, something had changed. Well and fully changed.

They had moved beyond calculated respect and obedience.

Ken's survival instincts said 'listen to Mari'. Not to decide if she was right or if he wanted to. The best decision for himself was to just listen to Mari.

He took her hand and followed her without a moment's hesitation.
