Five months after his release from captivity—and nearly 11 years after he crossed the border into the Gaza Strip, where he was held by Hamas for over a decade—Avera Mengistu was discharged Tuesday evening from Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

“I’m excited,” he said upon his release, which his family described as a “significant step in his life.”

Mengistu, who suffers from mental illness, is transitioning from the hospital to a residential facility tailored to his needs.

“I still can’t fully grasp that he’s here with us,” said his sister Almenesh, who has accompanied him since his return to Israel. “I’m incredibly proud of the progress he’s made since coming back from captivity, despite all the challenges, ups and downs. He’s undergone a meaningful rehabilitation process. We’re grateful to Ichilov Hospital and the mental health unit for their devoted, intensive and sensitive care for Avera and our family, which made this moment possible.”

In a statement, the family added: “What until recently felt like a dream is becoming reality. Avera Mengistu is in Israel. Free. Beginning a new path. We pray for the release of all the hostages.”

So, even when Ice is promoted out of flying full time, he's still going to have to retain his classification as a pilot, at least for a few ranks. To do this, he is going to have to book so many hours in the cockpit a year. Which means that Ice will, most likely, be trained on the Super Hornet when the Navy retires the Tomcat.

What I like to imagine: Ice, in his 40s with at least two stars, attending a flight school refresher to learn the F/A-18, along with mostly young punks. Ice doesn't say anything; he's the ranking officer in the classroom, but he asks the instructors to just sit on that information. The kids think it's funny he's in there, call him Pops, ask him how he's going to keep up with them. Ice doesn't say anything.

They're about to go up for their first more complicated maneuvers, and everyone's suiting up. The instructor passes Ice and a few other students in the hangar, and says, "Hey, go easy on them."

The kids laugh. Say they can't make any promises.

Instructor looks at them over the top of his sunglasses. "I wasn't talking to you."

The military term for what happens next is rapid dominance. None of the kids ever make fun of Ice ever again.

I love that these things that Tom does that show us where his mindset is at.

In the 80's he fought against the producers when he heard that Leah Tompson didn't want to do nude scenes, managed to convince the writers the take one of the scenes out and told them that if she had to do the other, he'd do it too.

He also didn't want to do Top Gun, managed to convince the producers to let him change the script and then rewrote Charlie's character, giving her the profession of astrophysicist and making her role bigger.

He also gave Penny a lot more work and figured out a way of making her character more nuanced.

His actions movies have one of the most diverse, if not the most diverse cast compared to other action movies with multiple black actors, women, with a black women as POTUS, with an Inuk actor playing a Inuk character who clearly didn't try to speak another language, and multiple LGBTQIA + actors on set.

i actually have a jewish!mav agenda. his mom was jewish. she died when he was a kid, and foster care doesn't teach him anything about it but he knows. it's in the back of his mind with his dead parents. and maybe, way later, he meets ice. ice's jewishness comes up and he tenses, all "got a problem with that?" and mav, for the first time of his life, goes: "me too."

Your parents ended up emigrating to Israel in 1988 when you were in university. You wore a yellow pin honoring the October 7 Israeli hostages at The White Lotus premiere in February.

I always wear it if I’m on a red carpet and a press line.

Public sentiment on Gaza seems to have shifted a lot since then. I wonder where you are right now on the issue?

Where I am is either a full magazine or no comment about it, because two or three sentences in a profile are not enough to deal with the issues. I wear the hostage pin because there are innocent people who were taken from their homes. Most of them are peace activists who lived in border communities where they were ferrying sick kids to hospitals and working with people from Gaza constantly. There are Holocaust survivors, there are children who were taken, there are people being starved and tortured and raped who have no access to the Red Cross. People are rightfully talking and thinking about all the civilians that are in danger everywhere else. But those people in tunnels, it’s now 600 days they’ve been there, they’ve been forgotten entirely. And so I wore the pin once and the hostages’ families got in touch with me and they thanked me enormously. I now am aware that they are watching me and that it matters to them. If my son or sister or daughter or father was being kept in a tunnel somewhere and weighed 25 kilos now, or may have been strangled or shot, and it felt important to me that some actors somewhere wore the yellow hostage pin, then who am I to not wear it?

So when it comes to more nuanced arguments about Netanyahu and the right-wing lunatics in the cabinet, or whether the IDF is or isn’t doing things, or this new Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is or isn’t handing out food correctly, or whether Hamas’s press releases should be printed as fact, and whether there aren’t journalists in there — there are so many complicated arguments. It isn’t a place to dip one’s toe or to have a simple quote on it. What I wish for everybody, obviously, is peace. Who doesn’t? I don’t know anybody, apart from the extremists on all sides, who want either continued war or tension.

The argument that you make for the ribbon is a humane one. Why don’t you think more actors have worn them?

Because just for wearing it, I’ve been called a Zionist baby killer, a Zionazi. Even a yellow hostage pin for innocents is deemed political, which it isn’t.

i unironically think that the resurgence of mustache culture has brought about a male slut era that is in many ways still in its infancy but is growing day by day. hemlines are getting shorter, chest hair is growing back, tops are cropped. gone are the dark, dark days when the sluttiest thing a man could do was roll up the sleeves of his button up office shirt. we are returning to the light of mustache rides and teeny tiny swim shorts. amen.

important to note two things:

1. Boulder Colorado has historically been a progressive liberal part of Colorado. it's blue bubble and Denvers blue bubble is the reason the state, while technically a swing state has been blue. this is honestly the last place I would've imagined a hate crime like this to occur.

2. the victims of the attack were 67-88 years old. On shavuot. at a March for the hostages. this is not some young adults getting into a heat of the moment fight at a protest. this person lit 6 elderly jews on fire.

Hours before Shavuot, in Boulder, Colorado, a man threw molotov cocktails and sprayed gasoline at Jews peacefully marching in support of bringing home the hostages.

Jews are being shot in the street and set on fire for peacefully marching in support of our kidnapped bretheren.

The DC attack was... last week? Barely two weeks ago? How long until the leftists lionize this unidentified man as performing good praxis in Palestinian solidarity?
