i don't think you realize how hilarious of an answer this actually is. there's a long answer and a short answer and yes, both are equally as important 😛

so, the long answer: i always wanted the story to be set in the 2000s because it's my favorite era to write in considering the limitations of technology.

back then, there was no facetiming, no instant access to social media, no heavy reliance on texting like there is nowadays. and when it comes to writing a modern au as realistically as possible, face to face interaction is extremely important in conveying the development of bonds and relationships. sure, i could have just as easily set my story in the year it originally came out (2023) and just had these teenagers not snapchat, text, etc each other all the time, but that's not very realistic for a teenager in the 2020s. for our HTB teens and especially our angsty eremika, centering them in a world where the internet wasn't yet the driving force of their social interactions was extremely important to their characters being the way that they are. plus, it's more likely and even acceptable for levi and mikasa to not be able to afford cell phones (though, let's be real here, levi doesn't give a shit about what's socially expected of him lmao).

another thing was that isayama's depiction of the school castes also screamed 2000s to me despite there being an iphone here and there in some of the panels. everyone's character is heavily 'tropey' for lack of a better term, which is often seen in those 2000s high school movies, and we know isayama LOVES his hollywood tropes.

lastly, on a more personal level, i just love the 'wow' factor some gadgets had back then. cellphones, gaming consoles, social media - it all had a unique edginess to it and brands were really trying to differentiate themselves from each other, so everything just looked cooler. unlike now, teenagers were so captivated by it all back then.

and yeah, that's kind of it.

i originally wanted to set the story in the early 2000s, around 2003 specifically because idk, it just felt right. but i ultimately pushed it forward to 2005 so this album could technically exist in the HTB universe and mikasa could be a paramore fan. when i say "HTB started out as just a vibe," i wasn't joking LOL. this album helped create it, and especially helped create mikasa's melancholic, angsty character.

it might come to fruition at some point. i've been intending to make it some sort of parallel to what occurs in canon, but haven't hammered down the specifics yet. there's a chance i won't include it at all if i can't make it relevant to the story.
