Walter Spies, 15 September 1895, Moscow - 19 January 1942 west of Nias in the Indian Ocean, German musician and painter
Act of transformation c. 1920
The son of a German diplomat, he grew up in Moscow.
Interned as a German in the Urals at the beginning of the First World War, he studied the languages and music of the Tatars and later painted after motifs from the places he loved.
Arriving in Germany in 1918, he soon felt at home in the avant-garde art scene in Dresden and Berlin. He was close friends with Oskar Kokoschka and Otto Dix and took part in group exhibitions. He became involved in the world of early silent film through his life partner, the film director Friedrich-Wilhelm Murnau (‘Nosferatu’).
In 1923, he set off for new shores. In the Dutch Indies, now Indonesia, he was deeply moved by the people and culture, just as he had once been in the Urals.
Short visits to Bali fascinated him so much that he built a bamboo cottage there in 1928 ‘in dear, lonely Ubud (Bali)’.
Among those who visited him there were Charles Chaplin and Leopold Stokowski, Victor von Plessen, with whom Spies made the film ‘Island of Demons’, Barbara Hutton, Margaret Mead, the Mexican painter Miguel Covarrubias, Vicki Baum, who stayed with Spies twice and wrote ‘Love and Death in Bali’ with his assistance, and Beryl de Zoete, who wrote the classic ‘Dance and Drama in Bali’ with him.

YOU BETTER FUCK IN THIS DYSTOPIA
& and it is the end of another summer where I have slept on my couch for days only allowing another body to interrupt long enough for our limbs to tangle like weeds up the side of a brick house, reaching for something impossible.
Most people I know cannot sleep until they crawl though someone else’s hollow.
I guess it can’t be too often that two people can laugh and make love, too, make love because they are laughing, laugh because they’re making love. The love and the laughter come from the same place: but not many people go there
