valentino "val" vaccarelli is the son of a mob boss with a monopoly over the southwest, and val is in charge of overseeing operations in albuquerque. this mob has very close ties with madrigal electromotive, and therefore val works very closely with gustavo fring.

in 2002, a rival gang attempting to cause chaos in among the ranks of the mob and bring down valentino's father frames valentino for the murder of a politician. val's family seeks out the best legal representation in albuquerque, and intends to pick charles mcgill from HHM, but he's. out of commission. so they force request his law partner, howard hamlin.

valentino and howard begin an affair as howard's marriage falls apart and he craves close companionship because chuck is AWOL

over the course of val's trial, howard is able to prove him not guilty and get him out on a mistrial or something (idk court stuff) which only serves to heighten valentino's opinion of him, and their affair continues beyond the trial.

valentino's affection evolves into a sort of obsession, having his underlings stalk him and everyone he interacts with.

after howard is killed by lalo salamanca, valentino becomes more closed off and refuses to ever open up to anyone ever again- until a few years later.

in 2009 (?) when gustavo hires walter white to cook meth for him, he deems jesse pinkman a distraction and a nuisance to the operation, requesting that val and their subordinates keep him away from the operation by whatever means necessary.

val forces hires jesse to work under him at whatever money laundering scheme the mob uses, offering him a handsome sum of money and keeping him busy.

valentino begins to obsess over jesse similarly to how he did with howard, keeping jesse under his thumb and never letting him out of his sight.
