as a librarian, i can't encourage you enough to check out stuff you don't think you'll get around to reading
like other institutions, at the end of the day we have to use numbers to justify our existence and inform our financial decisions
check out that novel by that author you like even if you know there's no time to finish it. check out a movie you like even if you can't watch it. check out a sewing machine even if you don't have time for a project. we don't check if you finish anything, and it all adds up.
support your local library by checking out things you don't need

High school. STEM program. Senior seminar. Parents sometimes came in to talk about their work.
We very quickly clock the weird vibes of this woman talking about... wellness supplements... and then she sprays a guy in the face with it?? By the middle of the talk, a large portion of the classroom is politely trying to figure out how this wasn't just salt water. There's a lot of whispering.
During the Q&A afterwards, someone asks how is this different than salt water. She gives a non-answer and tells us to... not mix salt and water or we'd get bleach or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You see I too often sat in school classes and thought “when am I ever going to need this, I’m never going to be an engineer, I’m never gonna be a scientist, I’m never gonna be a linguist” and then I grew up and it turns out a lot of bigots and cults and scams and grifts hinge their entire business model on you just. Not knowing what a protein is or some shit
#this was a parent of a younger student not a senior. can you imagine the feeling if you had to watch your mom give this talk? oof#i think the questions fizzled out there. everyone stuck in wtf mode or has realized theres just no point#unfortunately theyre still around. selling salt water as a supplement. its an mlm. of course it is

kids deserve so much more respect and it turns out that saying that is a great way to locate the horrible people in any community <3
#my high school experience was a nightmare in a lot of ways but at least they were good about letting us eat in class#the main sticking point was science classes having the last lunch slot at 1something and 0 hr started at 7:25#and they couldnt be sure if our morning classes let us have snacks or not so that might be well over 5 hrs#but also its a science class so you do need restrictions bc experiments and basic safety
