Gerard Way, lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance and creator of the Umbrella Academy comic strip, came up with Luther Hargreaves (Cosmoboy) during his tour of Japan. The musician was inspired by old science fiction films and made a sketch of a half—man, half-monkey.
