Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

I suppose the big reason I prefer to draw a line between steampunk (i.e., taking modern ideas about what a high-tech society ought to look like and projecting them backwards onto an imagined 1890s) and Victorian retrofuturism (i.e., taking what people who actually lived in the 1890s imagined the year 2000 would look like and running with it) is because the second one is typically way more batshit than the first. Steampunk gets you giant robot spiders; Victorian retrofuturism gets you a habitable Lunar surface populated by anthropomorphic bat people. These are both very cool, but the latter has a certain something the former lacks.

Key Features of a Captain Nemo Interpretation
indian (i cannot stress how important it is that this is number one with an electric bullet for reasons that would take another book to explain)
raw charisma
melancholic solitude
gutwrenching bleeding-heart sympathy for the oppressed
philosophical ambiguity so intricately multilayered that it offsets the murder stuff
the murder stuff

What if abilities changed the appearance of a Pokemon - but the abilities didn't suck?
While I was doing this project I got So. Many. People asking me to do Flygon. The only reason I never did was that it literally only has one (1) ability which is not only boring but also beats the point of the challenge.
So I took Trapinch, took it's abilities and gave them to Flygon and then yeeted Trapinch. Imagine Flygon with any of Trapinch's abilities and it become so much more interesting.
Do you think Ken Sugimori has finally gotten over his art block and that we'll get a Mega Flygon in Legends Z-A?

Little appreciation post for the many unique and heartfelt friendships we had in DreamWorks movies, including the Nublar Six
Over the years DreamWorks showed us in so many different ways in their movies and shows, how important friendship is. For me the best and most memorable are Hiccup and Toothless and the Nublar Six. Still til this day, Hiccup and Toothless have the best cinematic friendship ever written. Not miles of distance can break the strong bond they share and that’s true friendship at its finest.
