I’ve been pretty obsessed with Mozart’s The Magic Flute lately, so I drew up some concepts for my Queen of the Night design.

“If a painter wished to portray the Devil as lifelike as possible, he would have to seek out her face.”

Mozart often gave his opinions on his students in letters to his father, but there is no letter as scathing as this one, from August 22nd, 1781. The student in question, Josepha Barbara Auernhammer, had a crush on Mozart that made him very uncomfortable. He complained that she would take liberties with him, insist that he stay longer than their daily two-hour-long lessons, and would not be dissuaded even when he told her plainly that he had no feelings for her.  

“… There’s plenty to see, enough to strike you blind; but–if one is so unfortunate as to let one’s eyes wander in that direction, one is punished for the rest of the day–tartar emetic might be the only cure!–it’s all so horrid, filthy, and revolting!–pfui Teufel!”

Mozart had mentioned her in letters before, but he never described her so vividly or showed such a dislike for her. He crossed the line from annoyance at her crush to anger when he learned that she was lying about him and spreading a rumor that they were to be married. 

“The whole town is full of talk that we are going to be married. People are wondering why I would take someone with a face like hers.”

There were already lots of other rumors spreading about Mozart’s other supposed fiancées, and he was having trouble convincing his father that he wanted to stay in Vienna for his career, not for women. Because of this, Mozart may be exaggerating his feelings somewhat in order to truly convince his father of his disinterest. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Auernhammer’s actions did genuinely bother him, as he started giving her fewer lessons per week in the hopes that her crush would subside.

“ Madame Mutter!

I like to eat Butter.

We are, Thank the Lord,

Healthy and never bored.

Our trip is bright and sunny,

Though we haven’t any money;

We enjoy the company we keep,

We are not sick, we do not weep.

Of course, the people I see

Have muck in their bellies, just like me,

But they will let it out with a whine,

either before or after they dine.

There’s a lot of farting during the night,

And the farts resound with thunderous might.

Yesterday,though, we heard the king of farts,

It smelled as sweet as honey tarts,

While it wasn’t the strongest in voice,

It still came on as a powerful noise.

We have now been here over a week,

Shitting muck upon muck in a steady streak.

Herr Wendling has reason to be angry with me,

For I haven’t written any of the quartetti;

But when I get back to the bridge o’er the Rhine,

I will travel homeward in one straight line,

And write the [four] quartets without any sass,

So he has no reason to call me an ass.

The Concerto I’ll write him in Paris, it’s fitting,

For there I can dash it off while I’m shitting,

To tell the truth, I’d rather go with these people here

Into the world far and near,

Than with those music men I thought I knew,

When I think of them I feel so blue;

I may have to do it, but now it’s a dread,

For Herr Weber’s ass is better than Herr Ramm’s head.

We don’t insult God when we sit down and shit

Or if we eat muck, chewing off every bit,
