keep fanfic and trad pub separate!!
Buckle up homies, I'm about to get controversial on main and stir some pots but someone’s gotta say it.
Dramoine fanfiction blurs the lines between gift economy and capitalism, and we should talk about it.
With the rise of purity culture, fandom etiquette dying as consumerist mindsets enter our spaces, and fanfiction becoming mainstream, it sure is a hot mess riddled with pitfalls for anyone who do not tread carefully.
Which is why I am disappointed but not surprised that the publishers of certain Dramoine fanfics-turned-originals are shoving all consideration aside to monetize on the fact that these books were originally fanfics.
Fandom is not to be monetized in any way, shape, or form—and yet, that is exactly what’s happening when the publisher releases a poster to explain Dramoine fanfic to a mainstream audience and the author claims her fic on Goodreads along with naming AO3-tags in a comment about original work.
This also prompts readers and fans to create fanart to share on social media where they utilise fandom-related knowledge to (knowingly or not) market what is supposed to be an original work, further blurring the lines between fanfiction and books, which endangers one of the only communities left not fuelled by capitalist intent.
There needs to be separation between fandom and trad literature, because they serve separate purposes. Fanfiction is art created for the sake of creating art. Money has never been a motivational factor in the creation of these stories, they are written for the joy of writing as a gift to the community.
Books are also an artform, but a monetized artform where the intent of publishing them is to earn. Books become products, which is why we can critique and review them, just as we do a movie.
Fanfic writers and traditionally published authors can be the same person. Many of us strive to be both, but we must keep these spaces separate, because fanfiction and trad books are separate things with separate purposes.
Taking advantage of fandom to market a product is an oxymoron that will send us another Anne Rice. Do we really want JKR’s lawyers to come knocking on our doors? Do the publishing houses want that?

Last Line
Rules: post the most recent line of your WIP and tag someone for every word in that line
Thanks for the tag @arviyya !! <3 This is from a new WIP I started, following Hakoda and Zuko primarily in a found-family fic divergent from season 2 of ATLA. gonna be a beast, I'm so excited to have had some time today to write finally!
From the moment Sokka opened his eyes for the first time, their blue a perfect reflection of his own, Hakoda’s life was forever changed. Something awoke in him, seeding deep in his stomach and sprouting roots into his core. He’d been preparing for a child for months, had felt more than ready to embrace all the changes that would come with it. What he had not been prepared for, however, was the change that would occur within himself. He was not just a man anymore; no longer was he just Hakoda. In that moment, he changed, became a father. First to Sokka, and then to Katara, but he was a fool, maybe, to think that fatherhood could be defined by just his children. The change stayed with him, no matter where he was, no matter who he was with. Even after two years apart from his children, he still saw the world through the lens of it, related to others through it. It wasn’t just a job, it was who he was. It was ingrained in him, a part of him. No matter what the war stole, this. This he would not let be taken from him.

buckle up, buttercups, I’m about to get political on main.
I am Mexican-American. My James is Mexican-American because I am. Not a boyfriend or friend, but me. My family. My background.
And let me say. Latino James is great. I love the representation. Solmussa did it first (in my fanfic journey) and it was with such tenderness and care and reality. You Signed Up For This Latino James straddles lines and identities, politics domestic and international, and that is real.
but too often in this fandom, that’s not the case. Him being brown is just a fun little quirk.
That’s not acceptable.
if you write Latino James, especially if you’re white and especially if you’re white and American, you better put some damn respect on his identity.
It’s not just google translate Spanish and reggaeton and spicy food and calling Effie “mami”. There’s nuance, and even if you choose to ignore that nuance in the story, you better address it in an author’s note.
Latinos in America right now… We’re going through it. Our community, our identity is more than just sexy fancasts and “brown skin stretched over muscle” or “papi” or “beastlike stamina” or whatever the fuck else, and to reduce it to that, with no further research or any nuance, for sake of trend or subverting JKRacist is… also problematic.
if you write characters of color, ACKNOWLEDGE IT. I’ve seen marauders at pride - where the fuck are my marauders protesting ICE? Protesting far right governments?

there's no better feeling than an old hyperfixation coming back and taking hold of you and grasping your shoulders and shaking you and demanding you learn everything there is to know about that one thing RIGHT NOW and for you to write an epic-length fic about it and rewatch all the original series and give it your firstborn child and

Where the Stars Shine Brighter Chapter 7
Regulus should hate Remus for what he’d done. Should yell at him. Hit him. Curse him.  Regulus should hold him culpable.  But, he had always turned to the hand that slapped him for comfort, to the voice whose words had once cut him for praise. It only made sense when he turned to the mouth that had bitten him, to say comforting words. “Does it hurt?” Remus glanced up, surprised. Regulus couldn’t mask his fear any longer. His breath was loud between them, his entire body trembling. The wolf was close to the surface now, its excited energy just feeding his anxiety. It felt as if his heart would give out if it were to beat any faster. He was terrified, and Remus was there.  “Yes,” Remus said, honestly. “But it’s quick. No longer than a minute.”
