klinefelter syndrome [XXY chromosomes] flag
[pt: klinefelter syndrome [XXY chromosomes] flag]
klinefelter syndrome is the most common known sex chromosome variation in human beings. most people with klinefelter syndrome are never diagnosed due to its variance in presentation and its typically mild effects on health. its main signs are symptoms associated with low androgens (azoospermia, reduced penile and testicle size, sparse body hair), intellectual disability, and above average height.
blue was chosen for its association with klinefelter syndrome awareness. a rainbow circle was chosen from the autism infinity symbol due to klinefelter's common overlap with autism and intellectual disability. a paw with the colors of a common calico cat was chosen due to male calicos commonly having klinefelter syndrome, three toes was chosen due to klinefelter having 3 sex chromosomes, and it was intentionally made to look like a little guy. :)
an alternative was included with an XXY overlapping symbol in case someone doesnt like the calico symbolism.

mayer-rokitansky-küster-hauser syndrome [MRKH/müllerian agenesis] flag
[pt: mayer-rokitansky-küster-hauser syndrome [MRKH/müllerian agenesis] flag]
MRKH is a congenital variation which results in the underdevelopment or absence of the uterus and/or vagina. typically someone with MRKH's ovaries are fully developed and functional, but may be in an atypical place in the abdomen. MRKH can also be associated with kidney, bone, and hearing atypicalities.
the basis of bismuth was chosen for MRKH due to MRKH's variation in cause (which is often unclear or unknown) and presentation (many cases look very different).
yellow was chosen for community and connection. purple was chosen for contentedness, with blue being chosen for wholeness. green was chosen for MRKH's common association with plants (flowers in particular) and growth.

ovotestes/ovotestis pride flag
[pt: ovotestes/ovotestis pride flag]
"ovotestes" is used to describe a gonad which has both ovarian and testicular tissue in any formation. the majority of ovotestes cases are found in XX individuals, but can come about in any chromosomal makeup. ovotestes can also be used to describe someone with one teste and one ovary, or in polygonadism for someone who has two ovaries/testes and one or more other testes/ovaries.
based on the intersex pride flag, with blue to represent wholeness and yellow to represent genderlessness (as ovotestes can occur in anyone). left pattern has free-floating circles to similar to follicles on an ovary, and the right is solid similar to a teste.

mixed gonadal dysgenesis flag
[pt: mixed gonadal dysgenesis flag]
mixed gonadal dysgenesis (MGD) is a subset of partial gonadal dysgenesis (PGD), which is having one fully developed gonad with a streak, missing, or underdeveloped gonad. MGD is set apart from PGD due to it including chromosomal mosaicism including the Y chromosome. the most commonly known and documented type of MGD is XO/XY mosaicism, but it also includes PGD with a karyotype of XX/XXY, XX/XY, XO/XX/XXY, etc.
gray was chosen from the general cancer awareness ribbon to represent gonadoblastoma, though gonadoblastoma is not very commonly malignant and is not present in all cases of MGD (30+% risk). light blue was chosen to represent wholeness. yellow was chosen from the turners syndrome pride flag due to the common overlap. purple was chosen from the intersex pride flag.
the center symbol has a "mosaic" of the disability pride flag colors, the circle was pulled from the intersex pride flag, and the center orientation is meant to show a mix of X and Y.

sex chromosome mosaicism flag
[pt: sex chromosome mosaicism flag]
chromosomal mosaicism is a phenomenon which describes someone who has more than one makeup in the number or orientation of their chromosomes for any given pair. sex chromosomal mosaicism only affects the 23rd pair in humans. the most common types of sex chromosome mosaicism that we know of are XO/XX, XXY/XY, and XX/XY, but many different combinations are possible.
the flags background was chosen from the intersex flag. the inner circle is made of a "mosaic" of colors from common stains used to create karyotypes, primarily giemsa dye, which is primarily indigo, blue, and purple, with hints of magenta.

Under Appreciated Queer Historical Figures
[Pt: Under Appreciated Queer Historical Figures]
Warning: These people's lives contain intersexism, transmisogyny, transphobia, anti-transmasculinity, etc. I tried to find figures who didn't have depressing ends🫡 I'm not putting the most detail into these. Information from Wikipedia with fact checking before I posted it, but if I got anything wrong feel free to correct me and I'll edit the post!
Charlotte d'Éon de Beaumont - Intersex Transgender Woman
5 October 1728 - 21 May 1810
Charlotte d'Éon de Beaumont was a French soldier in the Seven Years War and a spy for France while in Russia and England. She's described as having had naturally androgynous physical characteristics, explicitly stated to have had large breasts, feminine body fat distribution, and "male" genitalia. In 1777, d'Éon petitioned the government to recognize her as a woman, and officially became legally recognized as a woman by King Louis XVI.

Eleno de Céspedes - Intersex Transgender Black Man
1545 - died after 1588
Eleno was born into slavery, though freed as a child. He married young, and became pregnant, though his spouse left him as the two did not get along. His intersex condition became apparent during birth, after which he gave the baby to a friend and started traveling Spain. Eleno began to openly wear men's clothing around this time, using the name Eleno and courting women. After an arrest, Eleno was told to dress as a woman once more, but once released continued to dress as a man. In December of 1584, Eleno and a woman named María del Caño applied for marriage, though questions about his sex were brought into court, with claims of him being "of both sexes". The marriage was refused, and Eleno was examined by a doctor who reported a "normal penis and testicles, as well as a crease and aperture between them and the anus" - indicative of a sort of vagina. In 1586, Eleno and María finally married. In June 1587 the couple were arrested for sodomy, and transvestigated by the courts. He argued that since he had a penis the marriage was legitimate, and those around him said that he was seen as a man by them as well. It's important to note the racial aspects of these claims as well, Eleno was a mixed Black man and many of these accusations were based purely on what was expected of white men and women of the time. Eleno eventually was sentenced to ten years caring for the poor in a public hospital, though eventually he was exonerated of doing anything wrong and was released. He went on to become a successful surgeon.

Public Universal Friend - Nonbinary Evangelist and Neopronoun User
29 November 1752 – 1 July 1819
Friend was an American preacher born in Rhode Island. After falling ill with what was likely Typhus, the Friend said Friend had died and was reanimated as a genderless evangelist named the Public Universal Friend. From that time onward, the Friend refused to respond to the Friend's birth name and pronouns, saying that the Friend did not identify with any gendered pronouns and wished to be referred to only as the Public Universal Friend or the Friend for short. The Friend's ideology consisted of the importance of free will, opposition to slavery, and sexual abstinence. The Friend grew many followers, called The Society of Universal Friends, primarily unmarried women who lead their households and communities.

We'wha - Two-Spirited Zuni Lhamana
*note that We'wha never seemed to explicitly state what pronouns were preferred. A close friend of hers seemed to alternate between using he and she, however, so that is what I will be using for this summary
We'wha was from New Mexico, where both of her parents died due to disease brought by colonists, and she was adopted by his aunt. We'wha was included in religious ceremonies for boys until being recognized as lhamana as a teenager, learning from the women to master their skills. She experienced conflicts with colonists at times for her culture. We'wha eventually became a sort of ambassador for Native Americans, and in 1886 was part of the Zuni delegation to Washington DC where she met president Glover Cleveland.

In many bills that ban gender-affirming care for trans people, there is what’s called an “intersex exception,” a clause that, judging by the name, suggests it protects care for intersex people.
Instead, these clauses permit nonconsensual surgeries to “normalize” the sex characteristics of intersex babies and children.
This kind of legislation often attempts to penalize doctors providing consensual care to trans teens, while protecting surgeons who operate on intersex infants who cannot consent.
At first glance, bills with “exceptions” suggest that intersex people’s access to medical care isn’t affected.
Instead, these bills protect a kind of intervention we don’t want and can’t consent to, while jeopardizing necessary health care, such as access to hormone replacement therapy for intersex people across the country.

Call to action for anyone who’d like to help make a difference in a small but meaningful way!!!!
A friend of mine is involved with the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis and there was originally going to be a series of signs dedicated to the queer histories around flowers, etc. for Pride month. However, the entire program was cut for being too “provocative”. In a place as queer friendly as St. Louis, and an organization that is supposedly super progressive, this is a step in the wrong direction.
If you have a spare minute, give the visitor’s services a call at (314) 577-5100 and ask why there’s no signage celebrating Pride month when there was for Women’s History Month and Black History Month.
Here is some of the history that was deemed too provocative for the general public. Please share this around even if you can’t call, because this history is too important to let be erased!

Let's try this again! Polling intersex people on slur reclamation
Yesterday I posted a poll for intersex people on reclaiming the h word and it's clear from the replies I was too general/ambiguous in my wording (whoops!).
So I'm gonna instead ask TWO new polls:
Do you think the intersex community as a whole should reclaim the slur? (Like using it for community-wide things like how ISNA had a newsletter called Hermaphrodites with Attitude, or calling intersex people in general this word e.g. "hey how are my fellow herms doing?" etc)
Do you personally identify with the h word? (i.e. personal reclamation)
Second poll to follow in reply to this post!

Realizing I may have read the question wrong, oops. Is it in a general sense, encompassing all intersex people being able to reclaim it? Or is it about wanting to personally reclaim? Or is it like a combo of both those situations? A little confused because it's not clear to me.
Intersex folks: thoughts on slur reclamation?
If you are not intersex please don't vote! CW this is a poll about the h word.
