“Fear not.”
Or, Vincent Benítez’s resignation doesn’t go quite as expected.
The movie is a little ambiguous on how the Pope handled Benítez’s intersexuality, but my interpretation was that Benítez himself was the one who suggested surgery (maybe he felt it was the “right thing to do”). I felt that the Pope probably wanted what was best for Benítez to feel comfortable continuing his work, and he was willing to sponsor the surgery if it meant that Benítez would be more able to reconcile things within himself.
But mainly though, I just like thinking of Benítez having someone important to him as a source of support during that disorienting time.

I don't think enough people are talking about what Carlos said in an interview he gave yesterday, about how Benítez views the more conservative/reactionary cardinals as scared, angry children that just need someone to give them certainty and reassurance, that's why he was so patient and yet firm with Tedesco, he saw a frightened child that needed guidance, that's why he was the best choice to be pope btw, because he saw the people with views that contradict his own not as enemies, but as children he needed to guide, not with arrogance but with mercy, patience and love 🤧
Also, I love Carlos even more for adding this depth to Benítez, a character that's already so amazing got even more interesting after what he said

Finished full sized Conclave sheet! It's just the first, to try and force myself to learn how to draw the characters. Mostly studies from stills of the film and then some silly shenanigans.
Some highlights-
Younger Benitez in Kabul dressed with a local pakol and scarf, cross hidden beneath his clothes. Then experiencing some regrets at the conclave.
Tremblay came out perfect on my first try, that evil scheming bitch (love him). I don't think I'll ever beat this??
Aldo gets fought over by Tedesco and Lawrence. Little to they know pope innocentius is about to swoop in and steal him away.

who remembers that very good tweet that was like 'did Jesus a carpenter's son ever smell the wood of the cross and think of home'?
well did Vincent Benítez sit in his room with just his candles and his loneliness and imagine that outside awaited his old diocese? did he refuse to use electric lights for the first few months of his papacy because in the dim candlelight he could let his vision blur enough to ignore the papal whites on the clotheshanger? that he could just concentrate on the flame and his prayers as he had done time and time again?
did he keep the clothes he wore on the flight and keep them unwashed, so he could press his nose to the collar and imagine he was smelling something that wasn't the clean linens of the Vatican? that they still carried the faint traces of a place now lost to him?
...just a thought
