I have no idea how long ago this ask was, and I've been super inactive, but thank you so much! Every single note I get on these posts are people giving me onions. If that makes sense.

The only thing is that I don't know what's gonna happen when I run out of meme ideas, which may actually be soon. But we'll see.

I am thinking of reading the Brothers Karamazov this summer and I need some advice. Should I read the original one from Barnes and Noble Classics or should I read a translated version? (specifically the translation from Richard Pevear) And how different is the translation from the original?

Okay, I haven't paid any attention to this blog, and I'm so sorry if this question isn't relevant anymore. Also, I am in no way an expert on this book, but I'll try.

Barnes and Noble uses the Garnett translation. The Pevear translation, on the other hand, is more recent than Garnett and is also more popular. If I remember correctly, Dostoevsky's writing was notable for distinguishing characters through speech patterns and sentence structures or something like that, which tends to get lost in translation. People say that the Pevear translation better preserves this style.

So the Pevear translation is better if you want to get more of Dostoevsky's essence, but really, you can probably read any version and still get the gist of the story. I got the Barnes and Noble one (Garnett) because it was cheaper, and it worked fine.
