Cas had to admit he had a soft spot for pre-war ghouls. In them he saw himself; relics of a time gone by kept alive for some unknown reason to haunt this decrepit wasteland, ghosts of the era that destroyed the earth. Someone like Redwood would understand him better than any average wastelander ever could.

“It’s been over two centuries and things are still so damaged,” he said, “and with all the raiders, the Brotherhood coming in, and the Institute doing whatever it is they’re doing... I just wish I had your optimism, I guess.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose, eyes shut tight and brow furrowed deeply. He wanted to changed things, but he was just once person. It seemed like everywhere he went there were people just as eager to tear down anything anyone tried to build or improve. He couldn’t understand it.

“Have people always been like this and we just didn’t see it before the war?”
