Black Mirror (Season 2, Episode 1) “Be Right Back”

Today is the Valentine’s Day. In honor of spending this day alone, I will write about the worst case of being in love; Losing the person you love in an unexpected moment.

Martha and Ash are a beautiful couple in their own right. One day, Ash dies in a car accident. During the funereal of Ash, one of Martha’s friend Sarah (also lost her boyfriend), approaches her and tells about a new invention that invented for the people who lost their loved ones. The program imitates the message style of the death person, the voice and speaking style. Furthermore, the company can send an artificial intelligence robot inside the body of the deceased which the reality level is quite high. First, she didn’t accepted that and wanted to continue her life. In time, she succumbed to her longing for Ash and she used this program sequentially including living with an AI who has giving a realistic body of Ash. They lived quite happily Martha, the baby inside of her belly and that artificial Ash.

When I see there is this kind of an invention, I thought what can go wrong. They literally turned a died person back. Even if he learns the information about Ash by time, this is one of the greatest thing ever. But Martha had lots of difficulties during the learning time. She loved the artificial Ash for a while but then she understood Ash is died. Nobody can be like him. She loved Ash with his stupidity, mistakes, arguments, mess literally with everything that makes Ash. This is the main point of love. It doesnt’t look for the perfect person. He was perfect because she loved him. When you love someone, you accept with his flaws. However, artificial Ash, couldn’t meet with these needs. When she yells, argues, he couldn’t respond that situation. He doesn’t have fear, anger or opposition. 

Although it was difficult to admit her death, she got used to it over time. I thought she was going to destroy him or restitute back to company but the end was more cruel than I guessed. After a few years, in their daughters birthday, Martha’s daughter wanted to give a slice of cake for Ash. As we viewers saw, Martha locked Ash in the attic. Only weekends, Martha let her daughter see Ash. Because of her birthday, Martha let her see Ash. I know he is just an android but I felt so sad to Ash. I am also trying to understand Martha but even if he’s an android he could learn how to be a dad instead of keeping him at the attic as a prisoner. 

It would be suprising to expect a complete happy ending from a Black Mirror episode. It still a bittersweet ending, trying to see positive; Don’t say I cant’t live without the person I love. Believe me, you live. Maybe you don’t forget him but you get used to live without him.

Fatboy Slim - Praise You

Hello, I am İrem and welcome to my first blog. I will write for my COMD 282 class about anything I like and inspires me. I hope you will enjoy. 

This blog is about one of Fatboy Slim songs “Praise You” which is new for me. It has a cheerful musical rhythm that made me happy. However, while I was watching the music video I couldn’t believe that it’s something professional. A group of people were dancing incongruously at a place like shopping center and someone who is passing from there shooting their video in an amateur way. 

To be honest, I could’t stop watching it. The emotions that I felt was beautiful. I wanted to be in that group of people and join their crazy dance. They were feeling the music and moving with the rhythm like probably most of us doing in our houses when there is no one around. Because we think that if we do these movements people will think that we’re crazy. This is the problem of today’s world. We don’t act like we feel. Before going out, we put our masks on our faces to join that crowd. It’s brilliant to see people who act like how they feel except disturbing other people. I find this video very sincere an positive. 

I am also very suprised that this music video has three MTV Music awards and people are supporting them. It’s good to see people who saw the real value of this piece and I see the producers of this music video as genious people and real artists that succeeded to give beautiful emotions to its audience.
