a closed starter for @elisewilscn
"oh. hello?" isa's greeting came out as more of a question, the girl momentarily frozen on elise's doorstep. because the person answering the door hadn't been her best friend, as she'd been expecting. instead, it had been elise's child. and though it had been years (nine of them, to be exact), isa still wasn't sure of how to interact with willa.
outside of buying her presents. which, thankfully, isa had thought ahead enough to do.
"this is for you," she said finally, springing into action to hand over the latest nintendo something-or-other (with a bow on it - it was a gift) as she was led to the kitchen. willa's murmured thanks was accompanied by zero change in expression, so isa really couldn't tell if her standing with the child had gone up, but maybe that could be attributed to the hour? it was 9am on a sunday and time for the weekly isa/elise check-in breakfast.
as soon as they reached the kitchen her path diverged from that of the nine year old, and isa was able to relax. she waited just a beat longer to ensure that willa was out of earshot before speaking, however.
"at some point you'll have to let me know if i'm getting her what she actually wants. when i was nine my gifts included a meet and greet with my favorite singer and a pony, so i fear that my reference points are off."

police interview: isadora morgan.
isa hadn't been waiting long by the time the police chief popped his head into the room with a smile and an offered coffee in his hands.
of course she'd received special treatment for her interrogation. after all, what else was being the mayor's daughter (and inevitable replacement) good for? it wasn't much, but she'd take the plush seating and casual atmosphere that being questioned in the chief's office provided. there were apologies for dredging up the past, murmured acknowledgments of her busy schedule and graciousness for showing up, and then they were off.
"of course. i'm always happy to assist, though i'm not sure that i'll have much to contribute," she prefaced, but she'd gotten her story straight long ago.
where were you on the night of christopher wilder's disappearance?
"like most of my classmates, i'd gone to an end of the year get together. though you'll have to excuse me for not being able to recall many details of the night - so much has happened in the past ten years," isa confessed, a perfectly executed frown accompanying her words.
of course, she'd begun to reframe the night the second it started to go south. she'd turned a high school rager into a more intimate gathering, a night of drunken shenanigans and terrible mistakes into one last hurrah (at which she would've never thought of doing anything unlawful). given that it was co-hosted by her best friend, how could she not have made an appearance?
when was the last time you saw christopher?
"that night," she answered after a moment of contemplation. obviously she couldn't have seen him after, but she wasn't about to pretend like she hadn't noticed him there. it hadn't been a big enough party for her not to have clocked him.
"i wish i could give a time, but it was probably on the earlier side? i don't think i was there too late. after all, my father had a curfew for me when i was in high school," she continued.
everything was relative (time in particular). she wasn't lying.
what was your relationship with christopher?
and with that, isa knew their time was wrapping up. after all, the police were very well aware of her history with christopher wilder. namely, that she had none.
it was the easiest question she'd been asked thus far, without a doubt.
"acquaintances? friendly but not friends? we mostly knew each other through our parents and sharing some classes, but we weren't close," she answered, sure she was hitting upon essentially the same phrasing she'd used back when she was eighteen years old.
and then... the man's pen was down, a thank you spilling from his lips, a handshake on offer. and she was free to go.
"i do hope that you're able to get the wilder family the answers they so rightly deserve. i know my father is distraught that this case has gone on for so long, but i'm sure he's thrilled to know that you're making progress," she made sure to say with a polite smile on the way out. "please do keep us updated."

"mmm, but i wasn't left to hang out to dry, was i? not when my knight in shining sports car was already on the scene," isa pointed out, a cheshire grin sitting pretty on her face.
she had to admit that nick had a point about the timing of everything, but with how little they all knew, she felt it necessary to play devil's advocate. "who said that's when they found it?" she tried.
"maybe they held it back for dramatic effect. because they knew we'd all be in the same room soon enough and they wanted to see our reactions. maybe it was the police that were daring everyone to attend the alumni night. i mean, it sure seems like a lot has been convenient lately, no?"
she'd continued to walk as she spoke, drawing them deeper into the trees. and yet they felt no closer to stumbling upon the scene of the crime discovery.
"unless this is a planting evidence situation, it has to have been something that was buried..." she thought aloud. dig far enough down and at some point everything gets unearthed, right?
" oh , really ? i didn't take dear old dad as someone willing to leave his little princess out to dry ... " then again , nick had never really put blood over water . there was nothing and nobody that he valued more than himself in the grand scheme of things . it seemed that people tried to hide their true nature but humanity was selfish , greedy ... flawed . he doesn't stop her , not one to grapple for power in that way when he knew that he was always out for himself . he did enjoy a woman who liked to take control ( for however long it interested him ) . " nothing , " the answer is blunt , to the point . nick can't think of a single shred of evidence that could have weathered ten years of natural elements ... storms , floods , the erosion of the human species . " which makes me think that it's very interesting it shows up on the very night of our little reunion , a little clue saved by time . isn't that convenient ? " he stops walking , arms crossed as he looks at her .

isa hadn't planned on making an appearance at the farmer's market that afternoon. it seemed that around every corner was a new member of the class of 2014, their small town made even smaller by the don't leave town police order. and though isa was reaping the benefits, her social calendar more full than ever, there were also some downsides.
like the fact that she was expected to operate as if everything was business as usual when asked about that night.
the new night, not the old one. the reunion night.
"it was certainly... something," she acknowledged carefully, placing a reject pepper back into the pile from whence it came. isa had very high standards when it came to produce. "sadly, now that word has spread about the end of night festivities, i'm not sure that we can classify the evening as a success. have the police sought you out yet? it seems as though everyone from the class of 2014 will need to be reinterviewed."
setting: one week later tagged: open @classcursestarters
Mira seemed to be one of the few that hadn't been in attendance at the alumni event the week prior. She had a 14 hour night shift and couldn't even think about calling out considering how short staffed the hospital was right now. But she had heard about what happened through the grapevine, and honestly, she was kind of sad she had missed out. Everyone in her graduating class comes back home and suddenly there is drama in Lincoln City again, and she wasn't there to watch it all unfold.
But it sounds like the cops wanted to keep everyone around. Apparently they had found something that had belonged to Chris? She wasn't sure but it sounded like this cold case might not be so cold anymore.
Entering the local farmers market, Mira headed over to the fresh produce booth to shop around. As she was inspecting the peppers, she was surprised to meet the gaze of someone she hadn't seen since high school. "Oh, hey." The raven haired girl greeted, trying not to revert to the awkward teenager she was the last time they saw each other. "Heard about the alumni event, sounded crazy."

"real car troubles. when have i ever given the impression that i'm the type of person who's willing to wait like an hour for aaa?" isa lied. it was a delicate balance between being believable and the lady doth protest too much, but she had been one of the stars of the drama club back in high school. she was sure she still knew how to sell a line. "that's not an efficient use of my time," she added for good measure.
but did it matter whether or not he believed her? there was no going back.
slipping out of the car, she made sure to follow nick's lead, trailing after him as they wandered towards the trees. that's where something would've been most likely to have been hidden, right?
"my father wouldn't tell me anything that the police didn't already share. a mysterious something-or-other belonging to chris was found by a dog walker somewhere around devils lake."
and then she was in the lead, spinning to face her freshman year ex as she spoke up again.
"it sounds like they must've found quite the something if they're asking everyone to stay. where do you think something could've survived the elements for ten years? droughts, floods, et cetera. i'm not really a nature person, but i feel like it's safe to say it wasn't near the beach."
while he may have been unceremoniously obnoxious , nick was not unintelligent . the very moment the announcement had been made , several thoughts had occurred to him but the first and most pressing was that if there was something to be found ... it should be found by one of them . not only would that allow them the obvious redemption arc that lincoln city was begging for but it would also give them control over any narrative that was to come . he didn't like the idea of others being questioned ... that he didn't have control over what might be said . he could do damage control for his own ego but this could go downhill fast , many of them weaker ... having soft spots just waiting to be pressed . " i don't know why you're here ... unless you count your fake car troubles , " knowing , although it was an assumption . he didn't recall her as a damsel in distress . " i'm here to figure out what they found out here that's suddenly lit a fire for the police , " as he steps out of his car with ease , keys tucked into his pocket . " any thoughts ? "

the news they'd gotten at the alumni event was unsettling, to say the least. after ten years they'd been presented with brand new information about chris wilder, and isa hadn't been able to sleep soundly since.
what if what they'd thought had happened to chris... hadn't actually happened? it was insane. obviously! after all, they'd been there. no body had ever turned up, but stranger things had happened. he'd drowned. and it was tragic, but not some big conspiracy.
but what if...?
isa had no clue what had compelled nick lehoy to start digging into things, but when they'd run into each other on their respective ways to devils lake, she hadn't hesitated to feign car trouble and flag him down. don't let me stop you from whatever you were up to, she'd insisted, having made an educated guess about his intentions. and it had worked.
she was pretty sure he was a psychopath. and she had disguised pepper spray in her bag (as any #girlboss should) in case he turned out to be a murderer out to erase evidence of his crime. but as they pulled up to around where the dog walker must have discovered the new evidence, isa was almost happy to have him with her.
"indeed. here we are," she agreed, peering at their surroundings from her spot in the passenger seat. "and why exactly are we here?"
open / @classcursestarters
while everyone else was probably playing it safe , nick didn't have the patience to spend his time waiting around to be interviewed by useless police officers . it was clear that they didn't use their skills in inquisition the first time around and he was curious what new evidence could have been overturned after ten years . far from a detective , his curiousities were completely self serving and somehow he had managed to rope somebody else in . yes , nick admittedly cared little about chris being gone but he was rather intrigued by the idea there was something out there to be found . no body , no crime . " here we are , " as his sports car , windows rolled down , pulls up at the far edge of devils lake , the ground drying out from the flooding from two weeks ago and no police cordons in sight . he hadn't seen a murmur of cordons or additional searches , materials moving backwards and forwards . no , nick was ready to launch his own investigation and his unfortunate ride along was going to be a part of that whether they liked it or not . an unexpected duo .

isa had always felt bad for kai. his whole family, honestly. all too aware of the political clout that her parents had received by aligning themselves so closely with the wilders in their time of need, back in high school she'd attempted to make amends in whatever small ways she could.
a weakness, her father might've said. there are no apologies necessary when it's for the greater good.
except what good had it been then, except as a boost to a re-election campaign? with current events unraveling as they had, she could feel a resurgence of her father's old tricks sneaking up. so she'd begun her atonement early.
"i don't understand the reference," isa admitted without a hint of shame. "but you mean you aren't absolutely in love with lincoln city, oregon?"
as the future mayor and a descendant of the founder of the town, she was probably supposed to be offended. instead, she found herself agreeing. she hadn't even had a chance of getting out, her fate decided long before her birth, but others had made it so far. and for what? to be dragged back for a police investigation (that her father had forgotten to mention...) that might just end up doing more harm than good?
"do you have something you need to get back to? because it's possible that they don't have a warrant for this. or if they do, it could fall apart in court."
𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐝 ⏤ open , @classcursestarters .
as much as kai just wanted to say " fuck it " and 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐄 despite the police telling everyone to stick around . . . he also didn't want to go . his head spinning with the idea that something of chris' was 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 . . . who found it ? when ? and why was it suddenly popping up now ? as much as kai wanted to 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐃 like he didn't care about everything that had happened , the disappearance . he did , at times it was all he could think about . ( constantly eating at his brain . ) ⏤ sitting down , an almost annoyed sound coming out of kai's mouth as he plopped down on the seat . ❛ it's like it doesn't matter how hard you try and get out of this fucking town , you still can't get out . ❜ not to say he wasn't capable . he had been gone the last ten years after all . . . but here he was , back . a tether he wanted broken . ❛ some hotel california type shit . ❜

it was a little weird being back at new horizons with so many of her classmates.
isa had been back since graduation, of course, for special appearances both with and on behalf of her father, but she wasn't super in love with the current blast from the past. the idea of being locked in a room with her besties and some people that she'd gotten along with back in the good old days was one thing, but add in all of her ex-boyfriends, her enemies, and the one friendship her parents had once forced her to leave behind? tragique.
and yet, nevertheless, she persisted.
she hadn't expected river calloway of all people to try and engage her in conversation, figuring that the male had learned his lesson long ago. back in high school, when the news about river's dad broke, her parents had been adamant that she go no contact with him. and for a while she'd ignored them. however, they'd won out in the end.
in these trying times, over a decade since the inciting incident, she was sure her parents would allow for an exception... yes?
"i didn't even know that the doors could do that," she acknowledged after a moment of internal debate, looking everywhere but at the male beside her. plausible deniability, in the event that his family's reputation was still tarnished past the point of no return. "judging by that, my father was successful in helping to secure funding for the school's security upgrades. on top of the shutters having come down, i imagine the windows are shatterproof. nothing is getting in or out of here. impressive for such an old building, no?"
setting: locked in who: open to anyone @classcursestarters
This whole event, it felt weird. Fucked. Like River was waiting for the next shoe to drop. And maybe that was more of a him thing. Maybe he was projecting. He hadn't been back in this godforsaken town since high school and it was making him uncomfortable. He kept wondering what people were doing, because right now it all felt like a farce. Everyone was pretending like this shit didn't feel like the start of some horror film, and it was causing his anxiety to sky rocket.
Also, what the fuck were Chris Wilder's parents doing here? Yeah sure, their foundation had something to do with the school's rebrand, but did they really have to be here? His foot was tapping out any nervous energy that was building in his body, and River decided in that minute, he needed a cigarette. He was almost towards the doors of freedom when the sound of numerous phone notifications went off, and then the slamming of the doors in front of him followed. Great, they were locked in. "You have to be fucking kidding me." He grumbled, turning to the person next to him he continued. "Think the windows locked too?"

HEADCANONS
the story goes that the morgan family came from nothing. before lincoln city, at least. formerly the moreno family, they changed their name and settled in small town oregon for a fresh start. they were seeking the american dream. little did they know then just how quickly they’d get it.
the morgans were a part of the founding of the town and originally became the mayoral family by default. only in the past few generations have children been born and bred for the role. isa has known from birth what her destiny is, so there’s never been any use in her finding other passions.
the valles have been in real estate development for generations, so business/politics is truly in isa's blood.
isa has always gotten everything she’s wanted in terms of material things, but she tends to struggle with making positive connections. she can frequently be described as “too much” - too dramatic, too argumentative, too selfish. though she was somewhat popular in high school, how much of that was because she was wealthy and well connected? college wasn’t much better for her in terms of genuine friendships. upon graduation she permanently moved back to town to learn the ropes.
isa was also not the best at actual school back in the day (math is hard!), but she was very involved in extracurriculars - in particular, drama, dance, and debate (co-captain).
if she could've picked her profession, she would've moved out to la to become an actress. instead, she spends her days pretending to be in a new spinoff of succession that's also a spinoff of the west wing… and veep.
she is legitimately good at business. people don’t expect it of her, but she’s very good at working within the political landscape of business relationships to get what she wants.
girlboss feminism has had an indisputable impact on isa. every time she questions whether she’ll be any good at being mayor, she just has to take a sip from her mug that says “the boss” and whisper her mantra - gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.
isa has a knack for planning events. her family has held a private gala or two (or one every year) and isa in more recent years has taken over the planning for it. she even spent one summer doing some basic event help with the rest of the local government to really solidify her own connections. it was also there that she discovered she has a few issues with control. apparently there IS a wrong way to fold napkins.
she dates, but not often. her standards are high and if you're not in her tax bracket, it's likely you're more of a networking opportunity than a potential suitor.
her little dad-approved community betterment programs are 1) renovating the local community theatre, which was shut down a few years ago after someone got electrocuted, and 2) banning plastic bags and plastic straws, to save the environment.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
the serena to her blair. equally as popular, kind of messy, and part of the close friend trio with tae.
makeover montage. isa has always wanted to play fairy godmother to someone - maybe this was back in high school, maybe it's more recent.
current crush. they don't have to be rich, but nice? nice would be good. she's a strong, independent woman, but the heart wants what the heart wants.
the one that got away. isa's had a fair amount of bad relationships, but sometimes things do end for other reasons. maybe their lives were going in different directions. maybe they really were a match made in heaven but she's the one who messed it up.
rivals. from back in high school or in present day. if from st. mary's, this likely would've been for roles in the drama club.
TAKEN CONNECTIONS
cat blanco. childhood friends.
cherry amin. math tutor/friendly.
chris wilder. they weren't close, but isa was there that night. and her parents made sure to stay extra close to the wilders throughout the immediate aftermath.
elise wilson. the serena to her blair.
nicholas lehoy. ex. they dated early on in high school. he's the reason she no longer dates outside of her tax bracket.
river calloway. former friend. though they were set up for friendship by their parents, they did eventually bond over the pressures that they both felt to succeed in roles they hadn't chosen. which made it all the worse when the news about river's dad broke and isa's parents insisted she cut ties. she didn't do it immediately, but by the time they graduated they were essentially strangers.
tae seong & tbd. trio. close friends!
vincent atwood. ex. they dated senior year of high school, up until he cheated on her with helena. as a result, she tried to get him banished from lincoln city.
